Amazon.com has a "Best Sellers" list for a number of product types which is updated hourly. Even within watches, there are a few subcategories, one of which being "Sport Watches." I look at these lists from time to time because I am very interested in knowing what is selling well and why. Because Amazon is a major watch seller, it is a good gauge as to what people are buying.
What I am going to start doing is talk about some of the watches that make the "top 5" in the various lists. These watches differ, sometimes daily, so I'll talk about different watches from time to time. This particular Casio watch was listed at the number 1 best selling watch in the sport watch category on this particular day in August 2008. Lets take a look at the watch and what I think makes it a good seller.
Casio watches are very popular in the US, and the world for that matter. They have a reputation for making rugged, reliable, and very affordable watches. This is all based in fact. Casio doesn't actually spent the type of money on advertising that some of its rivals such as Citizen and Seiko spend.
The Casio men's Ana-Digi Electro-Luminescent Sport Watch #AQ160W-1BV is an excellent example of all the features that Casio can pack into an inexpensive watch and still make it look somewhat attractive. The watch is a double display. Meaning it has a digital reverse monochrome LCD display dial, with analog hands on top if it. This way you get to read the time in two ways. In addition to the time, the watch has a world time function, several alarms, perpetual calendar, electroluminescent display (may or may not be "always on," quick daylight savings switch, and a countdown timer. The watch is known as "classic" in Casio terms. This means that the model represents a tried and true design or model that has been around for a while.
The Casio AQ160W-1BV comes with either a resin strap or a metal bracelet (according to Casio, the metal bracelet is only $5 more than the resin strap. Size is 42mm wide, and the crystal is mineral. The batter probably lasts between 1-5 years. The watch is also rated to 100m water resistance.

Unlike many slightly more expensive Casio watches, this model does not feature a light powered or radio controlled movement. You'd need to spend more to get that. So what makes this watch so popular? Probably because it is a good little workhorse that is passably attractive and very inexpensive. On Amazon.com this Casio is under $30.00. List price is about $50, but no one ever pays list. Easy to read, easy to own, and easy on the wallet. No particular regard for looks, but this watch is not exactly harsh on the eyes. This appears to be this month's formula for being a best selling sport watch.
