Audemars Piguet Millenary Chronograph Watch At SIHH 2009

You know that I have been economically deluded by the watch world when I hear that a watch costs around $35,000, only to think, "that sounds like a really good price." Not that I can afford it, I just wouldn't expect an 18k rose gold-cased Audemars Piguet watch with an in house chronograph movement to go for that "low" of a price. I must have luxo-fever. But for $35,000 you can't go too wrong with this beautiful chronograph version of Audemars Piguet's lovely Millenary watch. The sorta asymmetric is not off-centered as it might appear. Two oblong circles overlap to create that interesting look that Audemars Piguet perfected. Though, the chronograph version does actually have some off-centered dials.

The standard Millenary watch uses the two circles for the minute or the hours. This version uses the outer circle cleverly as a tachymeter. It is not the most elegant application of a tachymeter scale, but it works. The dial has everything in the right place, though it does come across as though it is a reflection out of a funhouse mirror looking a bit misshapen.

audemars piguet millenary chronograph back Audemars Piguet Millenary Chronograph Watch At SIHH 2009The case is in 18kt rose gold and measures 47mm x 42mm, pretty nicely sized! Inside, the mechanical movement is the automatic AP caliber 2385 with a power reserve of 40 hours (not exactly a stellar power reserve, but it is a chronograph movement). Sky blue is found throughout the dial as well as gold used for the out markers and the hands. It is a pretty bold little number, and a charming edition to something from Audemars Piguet that is not a Royal Oak watch. If you look on the rear of the watch, the branding reminds me too much of those fish you sometimes see attached to the back of people's cars. I think you know what I mean.

Hi Ariel,

I agree the style is a love it or hate it look.

It is very easy to critic the quality of the engraving or finish, especially when you have never seen the watch in person. You may think differently when you see the finish in person. Ariel you said you went to ALS and toured the factory, now do the ALS watches look better in photos or better in person?

Hi John,
You bring up an interesting point. None of the A. Lange & Sohne marketing images are actual photographs. They are all computer renderings. To see the watches in person gives you a whole different take of course. The watches looked better in person, and I would argue that most do. For that reason I try to use as many photographs on aBlogtoRead.com versus mere computer renderings (when available that is). Other times the computer renderings and watch themselves are different but both nice. Like listening to a band in concert versus manicured sound on a CD. Both good, but different.
In terms of the Audemars Piguet, it wasn't the quality of the engraving that I was commenting, it was the style of it. I am sure the quality is top notch as always. Take care.

Are the chrono dials off-centred? It seems to me that this is an optical illusion too - looks like the chrono dials are actually equidistant to the centre dial. Very cool looking face, especially if that's true - you could use a "standard" movement, but get an off-kilter look just through the paint on the dial. I'd probably get a headache from it after a while, but it does look nice.

I agree with you re: the engraving on the back of the watch: it looks too much like the low-budget engraving you get on a fake Tag or something.

Hi Charles,
You are correct, everything in terms of the subdials are perfectly centered. This would make it easy for others to copy the concept, which if you had to copy a concept, is a good concept to copy :) I like the looks of the watch, but you are right, it isn't very high up on the easy to look at for a long time scale. Thanks for commenting and take care.
