Archimede SportTaucher M Watch

Conservative sport watch brand Archimede does it again with the new SportTaucher (Sport Taucher) M watch. This diver is a rational man's friend with a sturdy German-made steel case, 300 meters of water resistance and a sapphire crystal. It doesn't aim to excite sot much as it does to simply perform - again, another Teutonic tool.

The case is 41.5mm wide, done in a satin finish (very tool-like look) with a matching rotating bezel. The crown is placed at 4 o'clock as is the date dial in effort to preserve the placement of the Arabic numerals located at 12, 3, 6, and 9 o'clock. I like the rounded crown guard and feel it adds a softer look to the case. At 12mm thick, the case should feel rather reasonable on the wrist.

Archimede will offer the SportTaucher M with two dial colors: Black and blue. The black version has easy to see white hands and hour markers with red trim, the blue model is trimmed in orange and has a bit of a "tropical" feel to it.

In addition to the metal bracelet, the watch is also offered with a shark skin leather strap - a unique offering for this watch. Personally, I think the black dial with shark skin strap is rather attractive. To add some visual interest you'll notice that the dial has some depth to it, giving it a more attractive look. Inside is a Swiss ETA 2824 automatic movement.

In addition to the Archimede SportTaucher M, Archimede still offers the SportTaucher A which offers a different bezel and white dial option. Prices for the watch start at $895 on the shark skin strap and $1,065 for the watch on the metal bracelet and can be purchased online via Archimede's website.

Archimede Outdoor watch

The newest watch from German Archimede is the Outdoor. It is an evolution on some past designs and fits a very specific purpose. To understand the Outdoor you need to look back to a watch that I believe was the thematic influence for the Outdoor, the Timex Camper. These are meant to be outdoors friendly timepieces that are easy to read and durable. They are not meant to be much more, and sit in a sort of functional minimalist category.

Size is 38.5mm wide in nice looking lugless steel case. It is rather thin at just 10.6mm thick. The case and watch is meant to be light for a steel watch. According to Archimede, the watch is 120 grams on the metal bracelet, and 70 grams on the leather strap. This is for active people don't want a heavy watch and don't want to wear a plastic watch. In a nutshell, this is a German daily beater that won't complain when you beat it up.

The case has a sapphire crystal and is water resistant to 200 meters. The black dial has white text for very high contrast. There are lumed hour markers and hands, as well as Arabic numerals for even easier legibility. Archimede intends the wearers be able to wear the watch on their wrist or over various jackets. The steel bracelet has an extension segment, and the leather strap is available with an option extension pieces. These are good for use in harsh or cold weather climates.

At first I found this watch boring, but the more I understand what it is for, the more I appreciate the strict utility concept behind it. You can see more images of the watch at Archimede's website. Archimede Arcadia Brown Watch

People looking for a nice looking brown toned watch, that is made well and has a Swiss movement need look no further. With what can only be described as a metallic chocolate colored face, Archimede's new Arcadia Brown watch shines like a luxury form of rust. Actually, that whole range of browns, maroons, rusts, etc... can be very flattering and fashionable. Made in German, Archimede watches have Ickler cases, which are known for attention to detail, quality, and most importantly value. Few brands such as this make their own cases.

The Archimede Arcadia is a very classic type of watch from a design standpoint. A face as easy to read an IWC Portuguese, with properly sized hands, and a modern font used for the Arabic hour numerals. The clean inner dial is spiced up a bit via the hour and minute indicators around the periphery of the dial. New here for 2010 is the brown color of the timepiece. The case is in polished steel and is 42mm wide by 10mm thick (very reasonable).

It has a sapphire crystal and a mineral crystal caseback for viewing the movement. Inside the watch is a Swiss ETA 2824-2 automatic. Pretty much everyone lots the German spelling of "automatic" with a "K," which is spelled out on the dial. The centrally aligned date window is nice as well. Too bad the date disc could not have been brown as well (though that would have likely made it a bit harder to read). Overall the Arcadia Brown is a very well proportioned and balanced watch that is nice to look at with not much to fuss about - quite the German way.

Really not too much else to say about it. These images of the watch were taken as I checked the piece out myself. This is a watch that pretty much speaks for itself. If I had to make one addition to the design, I would add luminant to the hands. Otherwise, what you see is what you get. The watch is paired with a reptile textured brown leather strap, but is also available with a metal bracelet (which costs more). Archimede Pilot XL Manually Wound Watch With ETA 6498 TOP Movement

I recently discussed the standard Archimede Pilot XL Automatik watch here, for which there is a manually would analog, that has a subsidiary dial. A lot of you mentioned liking the good looks, fine iteration of the pilot watch look, and of course the reasonable price of $650. For those of you who are looking for a bit more, well here is something a bit more special with everything you liked about the original watch with a super nice movement. This is a version of the manually would model of the Pilot XL and has a subsidiary seconds dial. In all its German goodness it has a Swiss movement. Not just any ETA movement, but a "TOP" grade one. What does this mean though?

Well most ETA movement arrive in various grades. Take for instance this caliber 6498-2. There is a basic version, and maybe a few until you get to the top. The highest level one uses the best parts and is nicely decorated. All this decoration ends up making the same movement much better, and multiplies the time production significantly. The second you are unsure about this you need just flip over the watch and admire the movement through the large decorated sapphire caseback window. You can in the image the blued screws and Cotes de Geneva polishing on the surfaces.

Archimede was able to get a few of these these movements, not sure how many though. The TOP movements also have Glucydur balance wheels, Nivarox mainsprings and hairsprings, and an Incabloc shock protection system. The movement is more accurate than the more basic versions, and has a longer power reserve of 50 hours. I mention this to show you how it is a bit more than a mere cosmetic upgrade. The rest of the specs should be the same as the standard Archimede Pilot XLH ("H" stands for handwinding). There aren't many of them, and the price is $1,070 each.

Archimede Pilot XL Automatik Watch

If you are looking for a good priced, well mannered, and large sized pilot style watch, this just might be the piece for you. Archimede released their next Pilot automatic watch with the Pilot XL Automatik. The watch takes everything you like about the traditional simple Pilot watch look and ups the size from 39mm or 42mm to 45mm. The crown itself is 8mm thick. This is actually a good size making for a decidedly large watch that I would NOT describe as being silly big. "That giant watch looks ridiculous on your wrist!" .... is not a statement this watch will attract.

The Archimede Pilot XL is housed in a steel case (made by Ickler) with a brushed finish, and the sapphire crystal has a double AR coating - so it is quite easy to view and won't really have glare. The dial is simple with high contrasting numerals and blued hands coated with lots of lume. It is a classic looking and highly functional watch face. Inside the watch is an ETA 2824-2 movement which is visible through the mineral glass caseback window. There is also a manually wound version as well that is similar in most regards but has a subsidiary seconds dial.

The strap is a classic pilot strap in all ways. It is 22mm wide with the customary "buttons" that I've always liked (though I know some of you don't). That of course with the contrast stitching that always goes nicely with the look of the high color contrast of black and white on the dial. The price of this new Archimede Pulot XL Automatik will retail at just under 400 euros ($650) - really a bargain if you ask me for the look, the quality, and the movement. The Aviator Watch Stripped: Archimede Pilot H Is A Likeable Bare Bones Genre Exemplar

While there are a lot of "pilot" watches out there, this one particular design is something that everyone can agree on as being a "pilot" watch. It is one of the 'original' looks, and has fared very well over the years. Many (I mean many) companies have attempted to provide their own interpretation to the design, or additions to the look. Few have been able to improve on the look, and the countless iterations of the theme have remained constant. The benefits of this look is simplicity and legibility, which translates well on a petite watch, or a 55mm beast.

Archimede has been making pilot watches of this ilk for a while. The various models skewing the look in various manners, but now with the Pilot H, they have taken things back to the drawing board. The result is something totally stripped down; bearing what is arguably the essence of the genre. You have a brandless dial, with blued hands, and a sober black and white color scheme. Instead of the "historical" manual wound movement, I am very happy to see that Archimede inserted an automatic ETA 2824 movement in the Pilot H. While I appreciate a nice manually would movement with a see-through caseback window, I prefer the convenience of a automatic, and I simply don't understand why more companies that make historic 'looking' watches use more practical movements.

From the single button on each side of the strap, to the sand blasted case, the Archimede Pilot H watch is certainly nice. The crown is easy to operate, and the sapphire crystal on the front and back add to the longevity of the watch. Size is 42mm wide. Price is right as well at about $400-$450. Archimede Has Two Classic Pilot Watches You Want At Good Prices

Classic pilot watches were designed to be legible in all light conditions and worn over a flight jacket. They needed to be tough and really clear to someone who was wearing goggles. Companies such as IWC and Glashutte pioneered the designs, and since then many others have taken the look in many directions. Those that stick with tradition do it best.

German watch maker Archimede has spent a good deal of their efforts on pilot watches, with good results. Faces are often the same, with bold luminant smothered number markers against a black dial. Pilot watches were among the first "big watches," so we can enjoy amble proportions. These two new PVD coated "Black Pilot" watches from Archimede do the tradition justice. The good news about the watches is that they are fully featured, but without taking away from the theme. Inside you will find either an ETA 2824, or Valjoux 7750 chronograph movement. Both automatic movements of course. The three hand model has a nicely integrated black background date, but the chronograph version curiously removes the date feature, for a cleaner look most likely.

Sizes are 42mm (though there is a smaller 39mm version, but we don't need to talk about that) for the watches, and they come with the traditional large "turnip" crowns. These were originally intended to provide easy winding while wearing gloves. The black PVD cases against the black leather strap with white stitching looks really nice. A handsome watch that will do the trick to fill your pilot watch void.

Prices are reasonable at 375 (three hands) or 925 (Chronograph) Euros for the watches. You can do the calculation to US dollars yourself. Spare me the humiliation of our weak dollar. Regardless, the values are good considering the IWC or Glashutte versions are upwards of $5,000. Check out the Archimede Black Pilot PVD, and other models where you can.
