"Watch What-If" is a special column on aBlogtoRead.com that asks the playful question "what if an iconic watch you know and love was offered in a different style?" The idea embraces a good timepiece's core design and has fun by offering new colors and material concepts to stimulate your senses. These ideas may be provocative, artistic, or just plain silly. This is about fun, Photoshop, and the celebration of wrist watch design and experimentation. The original design we work off will always be at the bottom of the article. The designs are brought to life by Beau Hudspeth who does the artwork and concepting after he and I choose the models and styles to focus on. These special design experiments are extremely time consuming and labor intensive but we hope you enjoy the results. Ideas and comments are more than welcome. Breitling Chronomat 44 Limited Edition US Veterans Tribute Watch

As an interesting limited edition watch for the United States, this Breitling Chronomat 44 watch will be limited to just 50 pieces and bear the Great Seal of the United States along with the message "Breitling for America. United We Stand" on the rear of the watch.

A few years ago the Chronomat 44 watch came out and contained Breitling's first in-house made movement called the Caliber 01 chronograph automatic. 44mm wide and in Breitling's lovely polished steel case, this watch serves as a fitting base for the limited edition. This model with its black textured dial and red accents is a real handsome piece. The case and dial design are aging very gracefully and this is truly a handsome piece. Breitling is actually one of the only brands that does make watches simply too large for my wrists, and I almost never say that. This 44mm wide version of the Chronomat isn't one of them however.

Depending on who you are and your perception of the message on the rear of this watch you'll either love it or hate it. When it comes down to it, this is Breitling banking on the power of iconography to push this piece to the patriotic US consumer. Would it be cool to have a Breitling watch with the Great Seal of the US on the back? Sure. Would I pay a handsome premium for it? Not sure. Another carrot is that sales proceeds of the 50 watches will go to benefit the Fischer House Foundation charity.

The Fischer House Foundation is a charity that produces housing for the families of soldiers in the military who are receiving medical treatments. The housing is meant to be temporary housing for the families while they stay nearby VA centers and other military hospitals while their loved ones get care and treatment. It is a pretty legit foundation.

Overall the pieces are really nice, but I don't see much of a connection to veterans on the watch itself. The watch itself is about Breitling and America (sort of), while the charity doesn't really connect with the timepiece theme. If you think about it, Breitling designers could have done some awesomely artistic stuff using the concept of remembering veterans (in the US and around the world). Those people interested in these limited edition Chronomat 44 US Veteran Tribute watches will only be able to find them at Breitling boutiques in New York City and Aventura, Florida. Or call (855) 999-1884. I recommend that you call and just talk about any ol' Breitling stuff. Price for each of the 50 pieces is $8,960.

Breitling Transocean Watch Hands-On

While I am not the type of guy who is that interested in vintage style watches, there are a lot of excellent exceptions such as the newer Breitling Transocean. When Breitling shared this piece with me I immediately liked it. Sure it is a retro-type piece, but ti is not a watch that is overtly "retro." I would rather suggest it is a traditionally styled watch - something that has a more timeless quality than looking as though it is stuck in a past era.

Last year Breitling introduced the chronograph version of the Transocean called that Transocean Chronograph. This piece does feel a bit more retro than the newer three-hand model. A lot of that has to do with the design of the pushers, style of tachymetre scale on the dial, as well as the chronograph subdials. Both the Transocean Chronograph and more simple Transocean are great looking watches and you don't need to think of yourself as being at all retro when wearing them.

The watches come in 43mm wide steel or 18k red gold cases that are water resistant to 100 meters. Breitling's typical high level of polish and case finishing are of course present. The high-quality manner in which Breitling presents their watches is really one of their major selling points. With aggressively sized lugs the watch wears large but still has a tasteful look on the wrist. Typical for Breitling, the Transocean models are offered with a number of dial colors. Each looks good in my regard be it light or dark in tone. The applied hour markers and long strips of white lume through the hands ensure that legibility is high - that and the AR coated sapphire crystal (that is domed like older acrylic crystals).

Lots of little things keep the watches looking classy. In addition to the high-level of fit and finish, the dials have nice applied date windows that those cool cross-hairs that always make dials look somehow better. Overall the Transocean is just a very well proportioned watch that is easy to read and easy on the eyes. Breitling also is able to have this watch pull of a mesh metal bracelet (which is hard to do). Though most people I imagine will opt for the padded leather strap.

Last year's Transocean Chronograph came with Breitling's in-house Calibre 01 automatic movement. The three-hand Transocean from this year has their Calibre 10 automatic movement which I believe is a base ETA 2892. Prices for the Transocean watches range from about $5,000 - $8,000 and make for a very satisfying wearing experience.

Breitling Colt SuperQuartz Watches For 2011

Fan of high-end quartz watches? Breitling has a nice new piece for you. What is high-end quartz? Well not cheap quartz! The perception that all quartz watches are cheap is a bit of a shame. It is true that you can buy a quartz movement based watch for a few bucks, but high-end quartz watches are out there - and they have their fan following for sure. Breitling is one of the few Swiss brands that continually offers high-end Swiss quartz movement based timepieces in addition to mechanical watches (and not just in women's pieces).

The mainstay of the Breitling quartz watch collection has always been their Aerospace watches. Those pieces are undeniably cool, but not everyone wants both analog hands and a digital display on their watch dial. So Breitling has always offered watches like this new Colt that are quartz movement based, but not digital.

I am not an expert of Breitling watch collections - though my understanding is that the Colt line has not always been about quartz movements. This new move might mean that moving forward all Colt watches will be quartz. If so, maybe that is a good thing. While Breitling has a lot of great watches, they also have a lot of watches! Few brands confuse me as much having so many product families and styles that feel pretty similar.

The new for 2011 Colt watches will come in three styles, a 33mm wide women's model, a 44mm wide three-hand, and a 44mm wide chronograph. Each will have a Swiss ETA quartz movement, but not just any quartz movement - a Super Quartz (SuperQuartz)! This is the name ETA has given their family of high-end thermoline (thermo-compensated) quartz movements that are much more sophisticated than your standard bargain basement quartz movements. In addition to being much higher-quality, they are also accurate to within about 10 seconds year (that is versus about 15 seconds a month for standard quartz movements).

The watches are also COSC certified Chronometers. Please note that this certification is different for quartz and mechanical watches, meaning that the criteria for quartz watches to get COSC certification are much more stringent. I really like that Breitling is catering to those people who want the reliability and accuracy of a quartz movement, but also want the durability and style of a Breitling.

In steel, the watches are typical Breitling flavor, but you'll notice a new type of rotating bezel design that separates it from the typical Brelting bezel with the four corner "claws." The bezel on the new Colt is more simple and a bit more diver versus aviator in style. You'll either love or hate the steel on steel look with engraved numerals in a modern font. They look like an evolution of the Breitling Chronomat B01 bezel design.

The dial design is interesting. You'll notice how it is set up into four quadrants, with two types of texturing. The hour indicators and markers are pretty legible and there is a fair amount of lume for night viewing. The hands look proportionate as well, which is good as sometimes Breitling gets a bit shy with hand size. The placement of a curved flange ring (with minute indicators or a tachymetre scale is a good touch). Water resistance is 500 meters for the three-hand models, and 300 meters for the chronograph models. Each has a double AR coated sapphire crystal.

Breitling will offer the new Colt in three dial colors - black, silver, and blue. Inside the three-hand models are ETA SuperQuartz caliber 74 movements. Inside of the chronograph is the ETA SuperQuartz caliber 73 movement. While it might look like lower-end ETA quartz chronographs at first glance, it has a lot more functionality. The 12 hour chronograph is accurate to 1/1o of a second, it has a split-second complication, as well as the date. All are COSC Chronometer certified and are very (very) accurate.

In addition to what looks like a new style of steel metal bracelet, the new for 2011 Colt watches are available with padded leather straps, and two types of rubber straps. Prices are pretty reasonable which is even better. On the metal bracelet, prices are $3,850 for the Colt Chronograph, $3,150 for the 44mm wide Colt three-hand, and $3,050 for the 33mm wide Colt three-hand. Look for them about now.

Breitling Superocean 44 Watches For 2011

Last year Breitling came out with an entirely new Superocean watch. It featured a modern looking design in a smaller 42mm case. While a lot of people wanted a smaller Breitling diver, even more didn't. So, just one year later, the Superocean II has been refreshed and enlarged. Now, for 2011, Breitling offers the Superocean 44. It comes in two versions: A three-hand, and a chronograph. There is also a GMT version but that comes in the 42mm wide case and will be discussed elsewhere.

Aside from being 44mm wide versus 42mm wide, the Superocean dial has been cleaned up and is now more legible. For comparison purposes you can check out the Breitling Superocean for 2010 here. The dial retains the core look of the watch that came out last year, but I think you'll agree it is more legible. There is more space between the hour markers, and more use of applied baton hour markers versus the stylized Arabic numerals.

The case has some minor differences in terms of styling. Though the differences are nothing too major, upon side by side comparison you can see that these are indeed different pieces. The biggest change for the case is the water resistance. The old three-hand model was water-resistant to 1,500 meters while the new one goes down to 2,000 meters. The chronograph and GMT are water-resistant to 500 meters each.

The bezel style is slightly different as well. Still no lume but the rubberized bezel insert now has minute markers from o - 15. Like last year, both the chronograph and basic automatic versions will come in a slew of color options. I do love all the color options that Breitling makes available. They feel sporty and fun, adding a positive sense of character to the collection. Both watches will have Swiss automatic movements that are COSC Chronometer certified.

With the Superocean 44, the Superocean Heritage, and other Superocean models there are plenty of Superocean watches to choose from. The consumer has more choices than ever for Breitling's venerable dive watch range and they are all available on the great rubber strap (with an awesome deployment), or a steel metal bracelet. These are some great looking timepieces and, in my opinion, are an improvement over the model offered last year. Look for these watches soon.

Breitling Superocean Watch For 2010 Hands-On

I don't love all Breitling watches - far from it. Though I have always been a fan of the "new" Superocean watch collection, which for me ironically started with the Superocean Heritage watch collection. Be it the three-hand or the chronograph, those are awesome watches. Vintage watches tend to be smaller, but the vintage inspired Superocean Heritage was 46mm wide. Oddly enough, the futuristic looking new Superocean for 2010 watch is 42mm wide. Hmm.... At 42mm wide it is a very wearable watch. Doesn't have that wrist jarring visual "pop" that many larger Breitling watches have, but these aren't small timepieces. Oh, and some people call these new watches the "Superocean II," but it seems better to just say 2010 Superocean watches (as it is more common to do so).

At the same time, they don't wear big due to the thickness of the bezel and the large sized hands and hour markers. They are so big, that they act to dwarf the size of the watch a bit. See what I mean? Drastically different than the outgoing Superocean watches, they show a new way of looking at Breitling dive timepieces. I was pretty drawn to them when I first learned about them many months ago, but didn't want to write about them until I got my hands on the watches. Well I did, and now that I have annoyed Breitling enough with my watch nerdery, I wanted to share my impressions (it is funny when you meet with a brand as a journalist/blogger - whatever, that actually is really into watches. They are sometimes weirded out when you actually look at the watch in details, ask questions, etc...).

The case is really nice. Very solid, high quality steel, with good polish and soft edges. Save for a few watches, Breitling follows the "feels good in the hand" philosophy when it comes to watch case design - which means few to no sharp edges. You can (most) always count on Breitling to have watches that are fully polished as well. None of this "brushed steel" nonsense for them. I really can't think of too many other luxury dive watches that are all polished like this.

As a pro dive watch, the new watch will perform well. Now water resistant to 1,500 meters (5,000 feet), the cases are highly durable and water resistant. The case also has an automatic helium escape valve. The hands and hour markers are very easy to see, and I love the action of the rotating diver's bezel. Notice that the style of the bezel is like a modern version of what the Superocean Heritage has. Here with those techie looking numerals (while the Heritage was just indicators). The black sections on the bezel are actually vulcanized rubber. Though the lack of the lume dot at the 60 minute marker might be a problem for some.

While I think the dials are cool looking, and really unique, they are a mixed bag to me. They actually feel a bit cluttered. As though the space in the dial isn't enough for the hour markers. The hands are fine, but don't look well suited to dealing with the scrunched together numerals. So while I love the large, lume coated hour markers with the Arabic numerals and the markers, I think that the watch hands have a hard time playing nice with them. Does this really detract from legibility? No so much, but they might feep the watch from being a design classic in the future. Though I do have to say that the massive applied numerals are fun looking.

The colorful choices are all about changing up the inner flange ring. There are five choices to start being black, whitish gray, yellow, blue, and red. I am sure at least one of them speaks to you. Nice to see Breitling playing the color game. To us it might seem silly at times, but the power of color and choice is a force to be reckoned with. Inside the watch is the Breitling Calibre 17, which is an ETA automatic movement (the 2892 I think). Breitling has the Superocean 2010 models all Chronometer Certified which is cool.

Breitling offers the Superocean on two rubber strap options, and their famous angled link steel bracelet. The locking fold over deployment clasp on the rubber straps is legendary. So smooth, so well fitting. They are very well-make and will impress you compared to other such deployments. Not sure about price - in the $2-3 grand range I imagine. UPDATE: Price range is $2,695 - $3,085. Certainly a decent watch for the price, and a good size for activity being large enough, but not too big. They should be out just about now.

Breitling Chronospace Watches Hands-On

First thing I thought of when I saw these new watches from Breitling was "wow, these are pretty big." They even wear larger than their 'mere' 45mm wide steel case would suggest. Probably because the case is on the flatter, broader side of things. This is Breitling's newest watch to bear the ETA SuperQuartz COSC Chronometer certified movement - in the wonderful lineage of the Breitling Aerospace. The Chronospace is larger, has more going on, and is arguably easier to use than the watch it is distantly based on. The movement is the Breitling Calibre 78 (base ETA), and has lots of cool functions. These include time, 1/100 ofÂ second chronograph (with actually pushers as opposed to having to dig in the menu with the scrolling crown pusher), alarm, calendar, countdown timer, GMT time, and second timezone display. All in a really nice quality, dial LCD screen display in addition to the time and chronograph hand on the main time. Having that chronograph hand there makes it possible to use some of the more traditional chronograph functions, and I believe perhaps some of the slide-rule functions.

A slide rule it does have,Â and also "night vision compatibility." Something about the backlighting system of the watch and LCD screens make them viewable through night vision goggles (NVG) - which apparently was something in demand...? Breitling says that the watch has a double sectioned caseback that works to amplify the alarm sound to about 90 decibels. They call this the "resonance chamber." Which actually is useful if you need the alarm in anywhere but the quietest place - an environment an airplane cockpit is not.

At first the large 3 and 9 o'clock indicators on the dial are a bit much. The watch feels like a toy. This is one area where I wonder if Breitling could have done better. But you do eventually get over that, and if you do, you'll notice lots of other good qualities about the watch. Any timepiece with a thermocompensated quartz movement is rewarding, as they are super accurate (like 5-10 seconds a year). The hour indicators are large, and covered in a long of lume, and the hour and minute hand are highly distinct. This is because the minute hand is longer in two directions. The crystal is domed sapphire with lots of AR coating, so legibility overall is excellent.

The watch comes with four dial colors and three strap options. You have Volcano Black, Mariner Blue, Tungsten Gray, and Stratus Silver. They are available with a mesh metal bracelet, pilot leather strap, and diver style rubber strap. A very useful watch from Breitling with an odd looking fitting its functional forward attitude. Its utility will likely make it beautiful. Look out for the new Breitling Chronospace watches soon.

Breitling Cosmonaute Automatic Chronograph Limited Edition Watch

Another retro themed watch from Breitling? Who'd have thought it? The brand we love to love, but that itself hates the Internet (just visit their website and you'll know what I mean) brings us a new watch with the Breitling Cosmonaute Automatic Chronograph. Sort of an overly simplistic name if you ask me, but I like the whole connection with space travel. Interestingly enough, the watch has the word "cosmonaute" (cosmonaut) in it that I at least associate with Russian astronauts, but the watch is meant to celebrate an American feat. So what exactly is going on here in the Breitling marketing department? It used to be that watch companies mostly focused on the American space industry, but now you have an incredible shift in focusing on the Russian - and to smaller extent Japanese - space programs. I believe it is because Omega has the US market cornered with the Speedmaster Moonwatch, and Russians are buying watches like mad (and will again as soon as the economyÂ rounds itself out a bit). Just some speculation though.

Going back to what the watch is meant to celebrate. Breitling says that for its (Breitling's) 125th anniversary, and they are making this watch to celebrate Scott Carpenter's 1962 mission aboard the Aurora 7 capsule where he first tested out a chronograph watch in space. It was basically an orbital flight around the Earth. IÂ believe he was wearing a Breitling at the time. OK, so that is cool, but what about the watch itself?

The watch does something interesting that you won't easily be able to decipher just from looking at it. See how the dial has 24 hours and not 12? Well the watch goes slower that your normal watch. Actually half as fast only. The hour hand makes its way once around the dial each 24 hours. Why? Cause this is Breitling's way of having a day/night watch. Making it possible to know if it is day or night, especially important in space where it is hard to know whether it is day or night. I like that instead of just redressing another watch, Breitling actually did something different with the Cosmonaute Automatic Chronograph watch.

The 41.50mm wide steel case has a Breitling Caliber 22 automatic chronograph movement that has been COSC Chronometer certified. It is a flyback chronograph and it has a date complication as well. The dial is attractive with plenty of lume, and you get Beitling's signature sliderule bezel for the 3 people on the planet that actually use it. Its value is far more steeped in looking cool than anything else these days. You also have the newer "Steel Air Racer" bracelet that is rigid metal and perforated as you can see. I've never worn this type of bracelet and have no idea if it just looks cool, or maybe actually is cool. Good news is that if you don't like it, Breitling has a universe of other straps and bracelets to choose from.

Like all good Breitling watches, the case is water resistant to 300 meters and the sapphire crystal has been AR coated on both sides. If Breitling is able to achieve 300 meters of water resistant on a chronograph without screwed down pushers, why aren't other companies able to more often? Breitling is further known for having highly polished watch cases, which is no exception here. Putting a little bling back into orbital flight right? The Cosmonaute Automatic Chronograph watch will be limited to just 1000 pieces.

Breitling Superocean Heritage Chronograph Limited Edition 125th Anniversary Watch

Why does Breitling need to continually tease me? I have really liked the Superocean Heritage line of watch every since they came out a few years ago, and they just keep upping the ante with watches that I want. Well here are the second line of chronograph watches for the collection. The first were simply the Superocean Heritage Chronograph watches with Valjoux 7750 movements, but these limited edition models have a sweet bi-compax subdial array which is infinitely more classic and "heritage" in style. Instead of using a Valjoux 7750 automatic movement, the watches uses a Breitling Caliber 23, which is a Valjoux 7753 automatic mechanical movement. Instead of a 12 hour chronograph, it is a 30 minute chronograph, and the date is placed in a nice little window at 6 o'clock. The movement has also been certified as a COSC Chronometer.

This limited edition comes in three dial colors, each with a funny name, "Black Volcano, Silver" (ok not such a funny name), and "Gun Stratus Blue." That last one probably yielded a product name marketing specialist employee of the month award right? Each watch will be limited to just 1000 pieces in each color. The black and silver dial models make total sense with the contrasting subdials and red hands for the chronograph dial and look good. Things get a little iffy with the blue dial version - that while nice, seems like an after-thought as matched to the black. I think that it would have looked better with a matching blue bezel, and maybe something else for the subdials. Say a lighter colored of metallic blue? Or something. It isn't a bad look, but it doesn't really look refined enough. Just my initial thoughts, you can feel free to disagree.

As a limited edition the three watches in the Superocean Heritage Chronograph Limited Edition collection are meant to celebrate the 125th anniversary of Breitling. A small touch that is hard to notice in the images is that the Breitling "B" is done in 18k gold, located above the name at 12 o'clock. The watch is still 46mm wide and 200 meters water resistant, and the crystal is double AR coated and sapphire. I still like the minimalist rotating bezel.Â Lastly, nothing new for the bracelet or strap. Still the "port hole" rubber strap of the vintage style mesh metal bracelet. Both look pretty good here.
