In my short years as an 'aspiring' watch photographer, few timepieces have truly evaded a good picture as the Chanel J12 Chromatic. The rich universe of hues that emit from Chanel's new "chromatic" material are more or less impossible to capture in stills - as the colors mix and meld with the light so amazingly. It is a sin to evaluate this watch for yourself seeing it in still images alone.

I first wrote about and debuted Chanel's C12 Chromatic watch here. There is discussed the important of the new material and the history a bit. Over 10 years ago Chanel swept the industry with the J12 - and there has been no looking back. In white and black, Chanel has been experimenting in-house with the new tone and style to feature. What they ended up with is a metallic monolithic gray that has an amazing sheen to it. The gray is dark, but lively as it plays with the light. I expect it to turn into the T1000 enemy machine from Terminator 2.

Again, the new ceramic material is a skillful mix of traditional ceramic material with titanium. Together they are highly polished and tasteful. Chanel did however do something weird (for my tastes) with the collection. The larger version is 41mm wide versus 42mm wide as is the case with the standard J12 collection. Why? According to Chanel they wanted this version to have something a bit different. I get that, but I still don't agree with the logic. Anyone who has a Chanel J12 is into fashion and will supplement their wrist's "look" often. Meaning that the material on the J12 Chromatic is enough for people to want to get it.  If they don't have a J12, it isn't because they desperately wanted a 41mm wide size - because 42 was too big, and 38 was too small. Plus, the smaller size might actually prevent some people from getting an otherwise great watch as they feel it is too small. I love the feel of the Chromatic on my wrist, but would love for a 43-45mm wide size.

Gray is a curious color for luxury and fashion, but it works. Gray is the color of rainy skies and concrete prisons. However, gray does have an interesting quality, that when it reflects light can look orange on the edges - which is very cool. In a high-gloss finish it looks pretty stupendous. Chanel even added other gray elements to the dial as well as a new brushed metal central dial.

Of the most interesting things about the J12 Chromatic is the weight. Still hard and durable, it is very light in weight - a property not common to ceramic items. The rich character of the color and the J12's enduring personality make this one of the nicest fashion watches around. Many people would be amiss by not having one of these in their collections.

There is a holy place that no one has quite yet reached. A place where metal is totally wear resistant. Where a material like steel would display the same metallic goodness we all love without ever looking scratched, worn, scuffed, or bent. This place is an alcove in the horological fountain of youth - the promised land where watches live forever. Joking aside, this is a serious issue. Buy yourself a close to $8,000 steel Rolex Submariner and you'll get some of the best metallurgical work in the market. Spend a few days with that new Submariner and it might start to show signs of wear with haste. Darn, no more new car smell...

For me luxury is about things lasting and quality. Screw rare hides, I want things that look nice and will fare as well as Indiana Jones did in the refrigerator after the atomic explosion in the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull movie. Why is that so hard? One of the best materials out there in terms of wear resistance is "high-tech" ceramic. The spacey material used for industrial and high-end watch purposes has little to no relation with our coffee mugs. I think that the two only share being baked. In the 1980s Rado started using a ceramic material for watch cases and bracelet. The material was innovative for being really hard to scratch, and not loosing that glossy luster. Though you were basically limited to shiny black.

When the original Chanel J12 watch debuted in 2000, it really popularized ceramic in a big way. What was their secret? Simple really. Rado was always avant garde in their designs. While the watches had good guts, their designs prevented them from being too mainstream in the Western world. The J12 for was lack of a better term... a modified Rolex Submariner homage, with a classy dial in black or white ceramic. Finally a fit fashion watch with world appeal. This wasn't a crappy plastic watch that came in "fun colors." It was a well-made watch with a mechanical movement in a material that felt great. Still... if you wanted the durability that ceramic offered, you are more or less stuck with glossy black or white.

Then watchmakers started to experiment with forms of matte or brushed ceramic. The idea was to try and emulate the finishes that could be achieved with metal. This is a step in the right direction, but doesn't offer a metal looking watch that will last forever. There are many people to whom the allure of a $10,000 watch becomes more immediate if they know that watch will look cherry for decades.

The latest step in that direction is being offered again by Chanel for 2011 with their J12 "chromatic" watches. Mixing titanium and diamond power into the ceramic compound mixture, they are able to get an only slightly glossy version of the J12 that has the color of titanium. Finally ceramic looks more like metal, with the same durability properties. "Ceramic Titanium" as they call it is a bit like the next step in the evolution of wear resistant compounds that will help high-end watches cosmetically last much, much longer. If you need any more proof that ceramic is really the key material of the next decade, just look at all the high-end brands that now rely on the material for at least parts of some of their watches.

The 2011 Chanel J12 Chromatic will more or less mirror the other collections in sizes and variations. The larger model is the 41mm wide men's model that contains an ETA automatic movement. There are also a 38mm wide version with the same movement. This model will also have optional an baguette or round-cut diamond covered bezel (with matching diamond hour indicators). Below that is a 33mm wide model that contains a Swiss quartz movement.

Together the collection is not something that revolutionizes the Chanel J12 line, but is a further evolution in the concept and a step closer to ageless metal. I truly feel that in the near future when buying a high-end timepiece, part of that investment is the peace of knowledge that you new watch will remain visually outstanding for a long time. Say hello to my new little friend. Not that Chanel let me walk away with one, but I wanted to. Call me a brand whore but I love what Chanel has done with their watches. Sure I might think twice about sporting a white one around town, but these new J12 Marine watches are pretty impressive. If you recall, the standard J12 watch looks like a dive watch. It is merely a dive "style" piece, based on the core Rolex Submariner design (with a different face of course). Now Chanel released a truer diver with 300 meters of water resistant, a more dive worthy legible dial, some interesting design features.

The case is 38 or 42mm wide and in black of white. Still ceramic, the black case is bead-blasted for a matte, rather than shiny finish. Though the white version is still done with a glossy finish. Going after Blancpain's 50 Fathoms or IWC's Aquatimer, the J12 Marine has a sapphire crystal over the rotating diver's bezel. I love that look, but it is not for everyone. The case quality is very good, with the watch being solid and comfortable. Perhaps a bit small for people who prefer 44mm plus watches, the 42mm wide version is still not too bad. The black with black bezel version is only available in 42mm. How doe you feel about the black with blue bezel? Marine-ish yes, not for everyone, but I like it.

The dial is all Rolex Submariner homage in bubbly way, but with an Arabic numeral 12, at 12 o'clock. Chanel uses a fat arrow for the hour hand, and a blue baton hand for the minutes - that is matched to the seconds hand. The hour markers are all applied and raised up making for a great look against the simple looking dial. There is tons of lume all over the face as well. You can see the cross hair style lines in the middle of the watch face, just like on the standard J12 model.

Chanel is being tight lipped about the movement. Likely and ETA 2892, or equivalent. These days they likely have someone else supplying movements. It is a standard high-quality Swiss three-hand with date automatic. There is an interesting engraving on the rear of the case, that is perhaps too simple than it should be (some wavy lines). Matches to the watch is a cool rubber bracelet. Chanel opted for the highest quality rubber, but it is still flexible. It has vented holes in it to let water in and out. Good for wearing on very humid days actually. Price is going to be in the $5,000 range if memory serves me correctly. These watches are important because it shows that dive watches are still the hottest pieces around, and that demand for fashion brands such as Chanel is very high. In fact, these tough economic times seem to indicate that it is fashion brands like Chanel that still have relatively high demand in watches due to the lasting popularity of the brand name.

Well, sometimes a watch comes out that just epitomizes a brand, and a theme; like started saying earlier. It really sums up most of what a brand is trying to be. Here, I am suggesting that the Super Avenger Blacksteel chronograph includes most of what Breitling wants to be known for. However, conspicuously missing is the complex slide rule bezel! You have a automatic mechanical chronograph movement, inside of a very large (48mm) black steel case. The black coating is a exotic carbon nitride-based movement, which is even more rugged than PVD.

Look closely at the chronograph pusher buttons, which are protected by castle like crenelation. Really nice and tough looking. the crown itself is well protected and grooved for each of use. Then you have the standard Breitling rotating bezel that couldn't look more at home than on this watch. Next is the military stencil font used for the numbering which again, is so aptly executed. The watch works so well from a design perspective, you just seem to take it for granted. Of course, there is the Breitling chronometer certified movement (Breitling caliber 13) inside that you can also take for granted in terms of accuracy and reliability.

The Super Avenger Blacksteel is a large and heavy watch, which is probably why it is on a rubber strap. I don't mind the weight and would prefer it on a steel bracelet with the same tone. This is likely available, knowing how much Breitling likes to provide options to its customers. Actually their pricing tends to reflect a separate price for the bracelet and "body."

So if you want an everlasting tribute to manliness in your watch collection, and you like the Breitling style, the Super Avenger Blacksteel chronograph watch is the way to go.

Although it has been more than a few weeks since the iPhone 3G's release, there is still a lengthy line outside the Apple store here in San Francisco. A sign people care dearly about the looks of their phone, as there is really nothing that the iPhone 3G does that other phone's do not. So for the fashion elite out there, here are four watches like the iPhone 3G that are fashionable and come in black or white.

First is the perennial favorite of the designer upper class. Designer by Chanel, for Chanel is the J12. One of the most popular ceramic watches around, the J12 made it OK for men to wear white watches. Coming in a variety of styles, sizes, and with or without diamonds, the J12 is a diverse watch which never succumbed to being glitzed garbage. Most versions feature well made ETA automatic movement with special editions fitted with tourbillons, and of course there is also the Audemars Piguet Chanel J12. Both the white and black versions of this ceramic gem are sized for men, although there are female versions available. Prices range from about $3,000 - $5,000 for most models with top range versions going for much higher.

Next are new additions to Blancpain's Fifty Fathom's collection. A legacy watch line recently revitalized. This is one of the most capable and accurate mechanical watches on the planet with accuracy rivaling that of a quartz watch. Underneath the beautiful looks is a serious diving watch, so don't takes its good looks as a sign of fragility. Inside is a manufacture made automatic movement, and on the outside is a special sapphire crystal covered bezel for hardness and beauty. The straps of the Blancpain watches are also unique as they are specially coated canvas, which make for durable, water resistance, and flexible straps. The black version is a stealth watch meaning that the numbers are black on a black face. One has to look straight at the watch to tell the time (at least that is sort of the idea). Despite the black numbering, the indexes still glow in the dark. This version is sometimes simply known as the Blancpain Fifty Fathom Black. One of the most interesting elements of the Black version is the case coating with is something a bit new for Swiss watches and quickly becoming popular. Using an ultra hard and scratch resistant compound known as DLC (diamond-like coating), Blancpain is able to get a rather glossy and exteremly durable finish the Fifty Fathoms Black, in a new way as opposed to the traditional used of PVD coating.

As opposed to the legacy "Fifty Fathoms" name (which is only about 90 meters deep), today's Fifty Fathom watches are resistant of at least up to 300 meters. Size is nice and big with the case being 45mm wide. Everything about the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms is absolutely superb in terms of materials used and quality, as it should be for a watch in the $10,000 range. The new white model is named the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Automatique. Which doesn't make a whole lot of sense as all the watches are automatics. And what automatics they are. The in-house Blancpain movements are extremely accurate as mentioned before, and have a 5 day power reserve! Now that is impressive for such a hardy watch.  There are several black models in the mix, but the new stealth edition takes my pick as the most stylish.

The Bell & Ross BRS line was discussed a while ago upon its initial debut. These are around the corner from being released and are a beautiful line of full ceramic watches from Bell & Ross. Styling is based on the ultra popular Bell & Ross BR-01 series, but represents a smaller (39mm versus 46mm) and thinner case. Both the white and black versions are stunning, and come with or without diamonds. The 39mm case is the perfect size to be considered "unisex," as I can honestly see these watches being appropriate on both men and women (unlike the larger BR-01) watches. To keep the watch as thin as possible, Bell & Ross curiously chose a manually wound mechanical movement. These are certain to become "the haute" Bell & Ross in the fall when they are released. Expect retail prices to start in the $3,000 range for Bell & Ross BRS ceramic watches without diamonds.

It should also be known that there is a slightly different and larger white Bell & Ross watch in the BR-03 line which is also ceramic with a 42mm wide case. This white BR-03 Bell & Ross watch was released before the BRS line, and cleared the path for the notably more chic and sophisticated BRS ceramic watches.

Realizing the market success of its Big Bang series, Hublot could not pass up a chance to release several all black or all white versions of the popular watches. Two notable Big Bang watches for our purposes is the white Hublot Big Bang Aspen, and the aptly named Hublot Big Bang All Black. Funny enough, Hublot places a gold number "2" on the face of the watch that while quirky, seems to fit in nicely. While the Aspen is not the only white Big Bang, and the All Black is not the only black Big Bang, these are probably the most recognizable and well done of the black or white models in my opinion.

If somehow the Hublot Big Bang watch is new to you, it was the watch that not only saved Hublot, but also made the once small watch maker in serious market force that was snatched up by LVHM to join their growing watch group (which also includes Tag Heuer and Zenith). Most Big Bang watches features exteremly well functioning automatic chronograph movements and uniquely legibile faces. Hublot prides itself on the variety of materials used in these watches which range for various types of exotic metals, kevlar, carbon fibre, rubber, ceramic compounds, and sapphire crystal. Price for a Big Bang watch can be be a really big bang to the wallet. Prices typically start over $10,000 and go way up for special editions. Hublot designers have a good time playing with the rich palette that is the Big Bang watch, and we can expect to see many more interations in the years to come. However, in my humble opinion, the All Black model is one of their best, and nothing stands out too much more than the Big Bang Aspen.

So there you have a rich (literally) assortment of watches that will look excellent on that iPhone holding wrist, whether you are using the phone for data or talking. You'll need to be well appointed if you want to separate yourself from the countless others who will eventually be sporting an iPhone as well, and with one of these watches you most certainly can.

Frankly speaking, Audemars Piguet does not need Chanel to enhance to look of their line, as they make some of the more beautiful watches available. Chanel probably benefits more from this relationship as it solidifies their status as a seller of serious watches. The watch model is simply named, "Chanel by Audemars Piguet." Nothing fancy about the name, and to be honest, aside from the Audemars Piguet movement inside, little has changed about the J12 design. The most notable addition is the switch from steel to gold for the trim. Gold and black mix together very well and the effect is dramatic. This watch is seriously handsome. The brushed gold finish is not overly glitzy providing a subtle elegance.

An interesting quirk about the watch exists on the bezel which instead of displaying the common "60" at the top displays "0." The effect is of course the same, but it is an interesting departure from the norm. Now what is this love child going to cost? Well the good news is that it is a "limited production" watch, and not merely a "limited edition." Which means it is going to be continually made, just in sparse numbers. And if you can get your hands on one, it is about $28,000 depending on the exchange rate with the Euro. A beautiful marriage of style and refinement, with a world-class movement, the Chanel by Audemars Piguet will find a happy home no matter which parent is chooses to live with.
