Dievas Timeattack Chronograph Watch

When I first saw this watch I was trying to determine what it reminded me of. Then I realized the colors on the dial of white, yellow, and orangey red struck me as very Speed Racer. That seemed to make sense for a racing themed watch called the Timeattack Chronograph by Dievas. Made in Germany now with their tougher steel and PVD processes, Dievas makes an assortment of rather handsome, rather price effective timepieces.

Much of the watch says "diver." The case is water resistant to 300 meters and even has screw down pushers and a crown. It has a 5mm thick sapphire crystal and also comes with a water-proof "NyTech" textile strap. Deivas also throws in a NATO strap. So basically it is a modern retro racer diver with all the boldness of a neon diner signage.

The Timeattack is placed in a 43mm wide steel case. It looks like many of the Dievas Vortex watch cases and fits well within the brand. You might say that the case looks almost too much like the Vortex case actually. The rotating bezel is nice looking and has a bit of a vintage design to it. I've always liked the look of mostly black bezels on steel cases. Notice anything different about this bezel? Well it has hour markers on it, and not minute markers. Does that mean it is meant for counting up to 12 hours versus 60 minutes?

The dial is pretty interesting. I like the design of the subdial hands and dials themselves. There is something almost 1970s about them, but I like that. While the main dial hands are a bit short and aviator in style, the subdial hands are proportional and quirky. It is also interesting how the chronograph subdials steal all the attention on the dial, but that reading the time is still pretty simple.

Inside of the Dievas Timeattack is your friendly neighborhood Swiss ETA Valjoux 7750 chronograph movement. Dievas claims that they use a top grade 7750 in there, and that they regulate it. Overall a pretty decent watch and even though it is on the higher-end for a Dievas, it is a still a decent value at a price of $1,880.

Dievas Vortex Professional Watch Review

I first want to say that this watch has intense lume. Any watch with a dial such as this mostly covered in luminant is going to glow like crazy. With dark hands and hour markers, the contrast is perfect, but done in exactly the opposite way most watches approach the use of lume being on the hands and hour markers alone. This is my first experience with just such a dial and I have to say that it can come in handy. It is also apparently part of the "pro" that makes this Dievas Vortex watch the Vortex Professional.

The original Dievas Vortex watch was released in the summer of 2009. I remember it well, and appreciated the newly designed watch that felt like something truly different from the brand. I wrote then, as I still feel now, that the Vortex is a pretty successful combo of an aviator and diver watch. Two years later the handsome watch was followed up with the Vortex Professional that I debuted here. The Pro version added a specially coated case, different strap, and more legible dial - and now I have reviewed it for you.

One thing I can say for sure, Dievas did pull off an even more serious looking version than the original - and by serious I mean better suited to serious duty for military folk (and people who like to pretend they are military folk). The only thing I believe that these types would change is the strap. Not that I don't like the black treated leather with red stitching, but rather I think it is more fashion and function. I would keep that strap for street use, and get an all black strap for more "kill or be killed" use. Actually, Dievas offers the strap with red or black stitching which I now learned after looking into it.

All this talking does get me wondering - "what does your typical soldier of fortune buy these days to wear on their wrist?" At the very least I want to know what some militia members up in the Dakotas are using to hunt un-American types. I would very much like to poll these people on their timepiece consumption habits. Would they choose a Dievas Vortex Pro? Maybe. At least I know they would enjoy it if they did. The larger sized 44mm case is comfy and feels purposefully designed. You have 500 meters of water resistance, an automatic helium escape valve, and a sapphire crystal. Funny how on some watches 44mm feels large and on some it feels small. This one wears on the larger side.

On the Professional version you have a black coated case. I originally said that it was DLC coated, but now Dievas uses different language on how it is coated. The brand does goes into significant detail on the durability of the coating process. I believe that I got an entire press release on it - complete with pictures. Specifically, the case is "scratch resistant Plasma treated titanium." The titanium is first sandblasted and then coated. I haven't attacked it with a screw driver but it feels pretty stable and I've always been a fan of the look of sand-blasted titanium. It also helps keep the watch light, and the coated titanium is going to be much stronger than naked titanium. Still not entirely sure what the coating process is all about. Going to be at least as durable as the best PVD coatings if not much better.

The case design again feels like a cross between an aviator and a diver. While it functionally looks like a diver on paper, it does have a larger dial and thinner bezel like many aviators. Still, the bezel is a diver style bezel, and there is that 500 meters of water resistance. The dial is about legibility. It isn't quite as sleek looking at the regular Vortex, but legibility is higher. I appreciate the pilot watch style hands and large Arabic hour indicators. That large red-bordered triangle is all aviator... Not to take down the coolness factor, but this might be a nice timepiece for people who have trouble reading their watches due to poor vision.

I think that Dievas should also offer a rubber strap for this watch. I think that will be useful to many people. Still, the leather strap is water-proof treated. Little details like that make it clear Dievas is doing everything possible to stand by the "Professional" part of this Vortex's name. Inside the watch is a Swiss ETA 2824-2 automatic movement which is a solid work-horse. Nothing fancy, but it gets the job done. Dievas augments it with a custom black rotor. It is overall a cool watch with some interesting features for the right crowd. The original Dievas Vortex is likely a better mainstream piece given the more traditional dial style, but this Professional version does keeps its promise by adding extra case durability and a more legible dial. Dievas Vortex Professional Watch

Dievas is following up the original Vortex with this Vortex Professional. I always liked the original Vortex. It more or less combined the best features of a dive watch with the best features of an aviator watch. For many people, this is the ultimate "mission" timepiece.

Two years after the original Vortex was released the Professional seeks to improve upon the tool-like nature and legibility of the watch. I think that for many people the original Vortex is going to be more of a "style" watch, but the Professional is just that - for more serious situations where durability and legibility are essential.

The Professional has a 44mm wide grade 5 titanium case coated in black DLC - which is very scratch resistant. It still has the rotating diver's style bezel and the good-looking case design. The watch is water resistant to 500 meters with a sapphire crystal. It also has an automatic helium escape valve. The dial is now all lume with the numerals and hands being in black. For style the triangle 12 o'clock hour indicator is large and in red. That little dash of color is nice. Dials such as this are incredible at night as there is so much lume and it frames the black segments perfectly. The lume is all SuperLumiNova. If you can't read this dial, you likely have someone reading this article to you out loud.

Inside the Vortex Professional is a Swiss ETA 2824-2 automatic movement. The black case is done in a sandblasted finish before the DLC coating so it has a smooth, matte finish to it overall. As you can see, Dievas is offering the watch with a black water-resistant treated calf leather strap with either black or red contrast stitching.Â Price is a very reasonable $1,130 and you can get one here.

Dievas Classico Blue Watch

Brand new from Dievas is this Classic Blue (also in black as the Classico Blue Professional). A dive watch with a rugged spirit and a designer face, the Classico Blue has a unique design meant to appeal to guys all over the world. Dievas watches always revolve around a diving watch theme. Their last new release was the Vortex, a really great watch that combined the looks of a diver and an aviator. This time, Dievas has gone back into diving watch territory in an inauspicious looking fashion diver that is still up to the task of diving deep. In a 44mm wide steel case with a 5.5mm thick sapphire crystal, the Classico Blue is water resistant to 1000 meters. Perhaps there will be later models with other dial trim colors. So there might be a ClassicoÂ Black, Red, Orange, etc.. Who knows.

Seeing a watch like this out of context is not always a good idea. Meaning that if you are the middle of big city looking for desk divers you might pass this one over. Be on a boat, or at a tropic beach resort and the timepiece grabs at you. It just has a very tropic beach instrument look to it. Maybe check out the watch on your laptop while sitting at a pool to see what I mean.

While 44mm wide isn't huge for a diver, it is 18mm thick - which is on the girthier side. A Much of this is due to the thick crystal and large rotating diver's bezel. The Classico name doesn't personally work for me. Dievas says that this watch embodies those traits more desired in dive in a classic sense. You also have a very handsome three-link metal bracelet (leather strap is also available). While it may be all well and true that the Classico Blue has classic dive watch characteristics, it just doesn't look like a "Classico" to me. Look at other Dievas dive watches and the dial design looks as though it fits right in. They like playing with black backgrounds and interesting designed to arrange the dial components. The dial works, but I think the hands are a bit petite. This usually won't cause a problem unless you are underwater, and it might be a tab bit hard to read the watch when it is darker, under water.

If you like darker watches, the Classico Blue has a PVD black coated version in addition to the brushed steel model. Price is just a bit more for the sand-blasted PVD watch if you like it better. Inside the watch is a Swiss ETA 2824 automatic movement. With a nicely architected case, 1000 meters of water resistance, and a Swiss automatic movement, the price for the Classico Blue watch is pretty fair. Prices start at $770 for the steel version with a leather strap ($850 with the metal bracelet), up to $950 for the PVD version on a metal bracelet ($870 in PVD on the leather strap). Both watches also come with an addition sports strap (probably rubber) with blue trim to match the dials. See where to buy below, and then tech specs below that. Oh, and the Classico Blue will be a limited edition model, but I am not sure of how many pieces.

Dievas Vortex Diver Watch

There is literally a long laundry list of positive points about this watch. I rarely do this, but I pasted below words directly from Dievas on this new Vortex watch because I think they did a good job at summing the watch up. A lot to like here. Not the most original watch around, but that is not Dievas' style. They prefer to pick and choose from popular themes and come up with nice mixtures. The Vortex is a combo between a dive and aviator watch. It also takes from certain popular German functional watches like Sinn. Actually the Vortex is all made in Germany, which is not the case for all Dievas watches.

Seeing the Vortex watch I instantly want it. The style is right up my ally, and then I look at all the features and I get excited. The Vortex Story

Springing from extremely positive reception the original Dievas Flieger Timer pilot watch received, Dievas Watch Company went on the exact route of accumulating the highest engineering specifications and product design to present the Vortex, a term synonymous with aero and fluid dynamics consummating an integral part of flight and aircraft design. On a quick glace, allowances should be made for casual onlookers to be exonerated for assuming the multi purpose Dievas Vortex to be merely another pilot watch. In actual fact this is much more. This is a watch designed as a precise time keeping instrument for currently active military, security and rescue personnel, overbuilt to withstand harsh conditions on land, sea and air. The watch case is manufactured using aerospace grade titanium, fabricated entirely in Germany, utilizing modern advanced CNC technology. Early in the design stage it was decided that since the watch will be preferred and put to use as accurate timing instrument by military personnel, only a less unorthodox, no-nonsense, uncluttered and highly legible design is deem fitting. As such, large, oversized Arabic alphabets 1-12 are set with 60 minute increments meticulously marked. The 3 and 9o’clock exaggerated markers together with the upright triangle at 12 shows design traits symbolizing the artificial horizon, an essential cockpit flight instrument. Quality vintage pilot watch style watch hands are chosen to complete the look. Copious amount of Swiss super luminous are applied over all the minute markers and hands enabling them to glow to a consistent bright greenish blue lume in low light conditions.

Dievas Zeta Professional Giveaway Winner + Watch

A lot of people have been asking me about the Dievas Zeta Pro watch giveaway results - specially who won, and if they like their watch. The winner recently received his watch from the giveaway sponsor GnomonWatches.com and has provided some images to share with everyone of his new Dievas Zeta Professional Phantom timepiece. He is pretty impressed with the timepiece and frankly I am as well. These are cool watches and here are some pics fresh out of the box with the plastic still on the strap.

I gave each entrant a number and then used this random number generator that picks a number between two values (1 - 100 for example). "First, I was surprised at how nice the box is. The warranty card wallet is a nice touch usually only found with more expensive watches. But who cares about the box; let's get to the watch! It's a great color, kind of charcoal and there's no mistaking it for dainty. It's got a nice heft to it and everything is well balanced and proportioned. The case isn't too thick for it's width, the bezel is a great size compared to the dial, the bracelet is just the right thickness and width, and the hands are plenty visible but not overpowering the dial. Quite an overall presentation. The pictures tell the story from opening the package to putting it on my wrist."

Dievas Divergraph Orange Professional Watch Review

Dievas is a new addition to the watch scene. Despite being new, the company is off to a running start with a large selection of intriguing timepieces. Starting in 2006, the watch maker has been releasing militaristic-styled watches; beginning with mostly classic looking models. As is the case with many watch makers, models start with one theme in mind, and begin to branch out, so that subsequent models each have and increasing level of unique character. Take this Dievas Divergraph as a good example. The design of the watch borrows from several classic themes. Namely, divers' watches and various military type watch designs. Even though the Divergraph is based on what are inherently existing designs, Dievas inserts a lot of its own character in all aspects of this watch. While you might recognize the genres it plays on, you've never seen this particular style in a watch before.

This model is the PVD coated Divergraph, which makes it all black. The case (which is the PVD coated part along with the buckle), bezel, dial, and strap are all black toned, and matte finished. The look is really bold and strong, perfectly suited for those who are partial to this look. The matte finish gives it a serious functional attitude, which again coincides with the target market, and is successful in its execution. All black watches such as this don't go with every outfit, but are certainly suitable with any sporty or casual wardrobe. After wearing the Dievas for a few weeks, I experimented with how well it looked on various occasions. It excelled at night, outside, and while doing laborious work. What the watch was telling me, is that it has a preference to be out in the open exposed to the elements, or worn while I engaged in manual labor. It looked restless sitting on my wrist while I worked at my desk. The watch wants you to go outside and do something.

While I would typically talk about a watch's strap later on, I am going to mention the natural rubber strap of the particular Dievas Divergraph that I have. The Divergraph comes with three strap options, a NATO strap (canvas cloth), ZULU strap (similar to NATO strap but made of weaved nylon which is the same material used on backpack straps), and of course a natural rubber strap. Some people are fans of NATO and ZULU straps, but I highly recommend the natural rubber. If you've never had a real rubber strap before, don't think it is anything like plastic resin straps (Casio watches, etc...). Natural rubber is pliable and stretches, making it very comfortable. It might not have the durability of weaved nylon, but it sure feels nicer on the skin. Even a few of my friends who put on the watch immediately commented on how niceÂ and secure it felt. This is really due to the thickness of the strap (22mm here), and the close integration with the case.

Further, the buckle secures the strap as tightly or loosely as you wish. This is one of those cases that I am happy not to have a fitted rubber strap (that needs to be cut to size) with a deployment. I have pretty small wrists, so there is an amount of strap slack after I put the watch on. It is important to ensure that the rubber sliders on the strap are over the excess band to keep it from snagging a bit on a sleeve. This however is a very minor issue and peculiar to people like myself who have small wrists. Overall, the Divergraph is an extremely comfortable watch while worn, having to do with the smooth case design, and the excellent fit of the case with the strap.

Speaking of the case, it is easy to miss some important thoughtful details. Take for example the unique crown guard. I have never seen anything quite like it before. The screw-down crown is covered by a curved little shield, as opposed to merely being flanked by protrusions from the case on each side. The purpose of this is to protect the crown, while at the same time deflecting snags. A really nice little touch. On the crown is an almost too tinny "Dievas" name signature. At first I thought to myself how cute the little engraving was, then I realized that I would have felt lacking if it was not there, so Dievas was proper in keeping the signed crown. The pushers are also screw-down, which is important to protect them and enhance the water resistance of the watch, which happens to be 200 meters.

Underneath the case you'll find a polished caseback with the standard information about the watch. From there you can appreciate the smooth yet well machined edges of the case. So often a case has sharper edges underneath, and it is surprising that the Dievas Divergraph, given the good value of its price, considers even these small, yet noticeable details. As such, I was equally surprised to find that the rotating bezel has a ceramic insert! Ceramic is known for its scratch resistance, and bezels are even more widely known as parts of a watch that get scratched. It is needless to say why a ceramic insert is useful. The ceramic piece in the bezel is well fitted and has a dark matte color that feels appropriate. I did notice a bit of movement, ever so minor in the bezel when you tap on it. This has to do with the way the bezel is attached and allows for it to click 120 times pretty comfortably around the case in a counterclockwise direction.

The dial of the watch has a lot going for it, with an attractive yet functional look. I have no qualms with the appearance, but there are a few issues with the actual data on the dial. You'll be happy to know that it is covered with a sapphire crystal (no mineral glass here). A slanted chapter ring around the dial greatly helps with reading comfort. The dial is deep, and the subdials have circular texturing which has a nice look. Between the hour markers are one tenth of a second hash marks. These are decorative only, as the chronograph only counts in one second increments (not less).Â The other issue I have is with the minutes subdial counter for the chronograph. The subdial is supposed to have 60 marks (one for each minutes), but for style reasons, the Divergraph only has a mark each 5 minutes. This makes it hard to use the chronograph function with down to the minute precision. I do like how each of the chronograph function hands are red which makes it very easy to read. From a glance though, the dial is handsome and functional, with the primary function (telling the time) a pleasure to deduce.

This brings me to my absolute favorite part of the watch, which are the Tritium gas tubes in the watch specially made for Dievas by Swiss Tritium tube maker MB Microtec. I had been wanting for a Tritium gas tube watch for a long time, and I have to admit that having one has surpassed my expectations. Tritium gas tubes are harmless radioactive gas filled tubes that perpetually glow for about 25 years. The tubes can come in various colors, and be various lengths. Dievas uses them in the hands (chronograph seconds hand included), and each of the hour markers. Three different colors are employed here, with a miraculous effect. In a well lit room, the face of the watch emits no out of the ordinary light. Once the light levels are lower, you can see the glow coming from the markers making it perfectly viewable in any type of darkness. It honestly looks as though there are small LED lights at work, but this requires no electricity. This aspect of the watch makes it an instant favorite of mine, and secures its position as a useful tool in low-light situations.

Inside the Divergraph is a Japanese quartz movement from Citizen's movement maker Miyota. This movement maker is in the business of producing far more watch movements than its Swiss counterparts on a sheer yearly volume basis. The movements are reliable, and common enough so that parts are available for any problems. I have to say that my time with the Dievas Divergraph has left me feeling pretty confident about its quality. I also like the size of the watch at 43mm wide. The 22mm wide lugs hold the wonderful strap, while the watch itself just feels good in size and looks, it is also solidly built. Really, this is a man's watch, and while nothing is perfect, the minor quibbles I have with this watch are easily eclipsed by its value and proven usefulness. At $350 US, you really can't go wrong. I'll keep a close eye on Dievas, as should you. If there are other watches prove as competent, its a brand of watchesÂ worth having around.
