Longio Tourbillon Watches For 2010

To my knowledge, Longio is one of the only Chinese watch brands trying to push and market their tourbillon watches aggressively. I reviewed one of their Telamon 1000m Tourbillon Dive watches here, and originally discussed Longio Chinese tourbillon watches here. You can find more information about the brand in those articles. Here I would like to share with you a few of their new, or other pieces. I visited them at Baselworld and snapped some shots - though the above images of the green numeraled Asamara Tourbillon were sent to me from Longio themselves.

The Asamara Tourbillon watch is probably their most distinctive piece. It also features what I call an "architectural" design that the Telamon Diver watch also had. Not that they look the same, but they feel as though they are adapted building designs as opposed to traditional watch designs. All the watches here have a certain "polish" to their case designs. It makes them feel modern looking and easy on the eyes. They aren't the highly complex designs that some other brands gravitate towards, but feel more like frames for the dials and movements. They are also all designs based on having a low number of parts in the case design. Thus, the designs play with shapes, cuts, and polishes.

It is true that Longio is efficient with parts, meaning that you'll see the same hands or cases on a number of models. I see it as economical experimentation. Unlike many boring euro-copycat Chinese watches, you see a distinct level of unique design in Longio pieces that still feel as though they fit in the watch industry. The Asamara watch certain conjures up this sentiment, as does the watch with the engraved dial, and the other roundish watch with the green numerals. Apologies for not having all the model names at my disposal.

Some of the best Longio Tourbillon watches are sport pieces - or at least sporty looking ones. Rubber straps and clear faces are enhanced with tourbillon complications. Perhaps not the tourbillon watch for everyone, but still interesting and marketable. A real "easy on the eyes" aesthetic that I can appreciate. For the ladies is a tourbillon watch as well. This is a more fancy watch for sure. An horizontally oblong case in polished steel with a mother-of-pearl dial, semi-precious stones around the bezel, and a date with moon phase indicator subdial. The applied hour markers and hands are attractive as well. It might not have as polished a design as those coming from Europe, but the price is comparatively fractional.

The above green Asamara Tourbillon watch is Ref. SG3826 and is limited to just 100 pieces. It has a DLC (not PVD) coated steel case and is priced at $7,239. That is about the upper range area of their watches, but I have seen a few that go to $8,000. There are tourbillon models they have that go down to $2,000 - $3,000. Longio has some good machinery and interesting designers (like I keep saying). If you are looking for a lower priced tourbillon watch and must have one within reach, Longio would be a place to look.

Longio Telamon Tourbillon 1000m Diver Watch Review

My first tourbillon. The package was delivered to me and I quickly opened the box to find the Longio case inside. It was a larger presentation box, but that made sense given some of the included accessories. I hastily lifted the leather lid and a wide smile appeared on my face to see the almost mythical complication operating under the plastic film cover on the watch dial. Being an automatic movement, the transit had kept the watch wound enough for it to be moving when I first saw it. That little rotating balance wheel, spinning while it oscillates had a profound effect on me - given that I have been writing about $100,000 plus tourbillons for a while. Now I had one in my home. The difference here is where the tourbillon was made (that of course implies a host of differences). While most of tourbillon movements I have written about have European origin, this guy was from China.

And the watch totally is a "guy." Very masculine proportions and an aggressive stance. Maybe I am wrong for saying this, but I am surprised that a design from China has such a cool look. The design isn't necessarily a complex feat of refinement and careful study - but more a raw, architectural style with a guttural sense of strength. It is like the unpredictable marriage of Japanese armor design and the architectural style of proud looking propaganda-run state government buildings. I need to caution that last point, because if you've never seen government buildings made out of the direction of propaganda driven countries (communists, dictatorship, etc...), you'd have no idea what I am talking about. Unlike the cheap residences of communist era countries for example, the government buildings were very strong looking and meant to illicit a strong sense of pride and respect for the "establishment." I see a lot of this almost neo-Roman mixed with art-deco on steroids style in this watch. I feel as though this exaggerated explanation is necessary,Â because I want to show you that this is a unique design, but also why I think it stands out. It is possible that given China's government, there is a bit of this design element in their government buildings, which might have influenced the watch design. Not having been to China, I can't really say. Though a hint about their design philosophy comes from the brand's sub-slogan "The P.R.C. (People's Republic of China) Manufacture of Exceptional Mechanical Timepieces."

Regardless of the actual inspiration for the design, it is a lasting one that most men with a taste for the bold will enjoy. Traditionalists will probably not be too keen on this watch, as it is quite the opposite of the demure Swiss timepiece that we have an image in our minds of when thinking about standard dressy timepieces. I personally get a big kick out of wearing it. I wrote about this Longio watch a while ago before it even had a formal name here. Since then it has been given the name "Telamon" Now I can call it something proper. So this is the Longio Telamon 1000m diver watch, Ref. SG3829SB (SG3829). It is one of several tourbillon watches that brand currently offers, but the grandest one in my opinion. Nevertheless, most of their designs share this modern-esque style of outspokenness and poise that is not necessarily what you would expect from Chinese design. Perhaps this is due to Longio's proximity to the more free-spoken area of Hong Kong. Plus, Hong Kong is one of the most important places in the world for the watch industry, so no doubt Longio benefits from being able to experience the offerings from numerous brands.

If you haven't heard of Longio, that is OK. I hadn't either until a while ago, but as with all new brands our education must start somewhere. Longio has apparently long been working as an OEM (original equipment manufacturer) and ODM (original design manufacturer) for other watch brands for a while now. This schooled them in how to make watches, even if they didn't put their name on it. This should at least bestow confidence that they know what they are doing, and that they do it all themselves.

Let's chat about the movement, as this is going to be an important component of people actually buying the watch. Longio uses an automatic tourbillon movement that they make. It has 19 jewels, beats at 21,600bph, and has a power reserve of 65 hours when fully wound. Functions include the time with the one minute tourbillon acting as the subsidiary seconds dial. Along with the automatic winding, you can hand wind the movement. I can't speak to much of the movement's decoration and finish aside from what I see in the open tourbillon window. A large segment of the lower part of the dial has been wisely used to display the tourbillon. You see the complication moving around just as you would expect. It is no less satisfying to watch in operation that other similar tourbillons. There is a thin bridge over the tourbillon carriage and blued screws to enhance the look.

I would say that there is one major difference between the Longio tourbillon and its European counterparts - hand finishing. The Europeans have long prided themselves in taking long periods of time to delicately hand decorate and finish watch movement parts. This involves taking the pieces straight from the expensive machines that make them and polishing and finishing them - more often than not under a microscope. This is why Swiss movements for example, appear as beautiful as they do. Such finishing also assists with quality and finding defective parts. Longio doesn't have that same type of look in the movement. Though you need to be a real connoisseur (like myself I guess) to notice it.Â In fact, for most people, looking at the Telamon's tourbillon with the naked eye reveals "just a cool looking tourbillon." Most of the differences aren't apparent until you get really close or check things out under magnification. And while you ponder how nice it is that someone lovingly filed each gear and bridge in a watch, you must be mindful of the price. It of course goes without saying that Swiss tourbillon watches cost many more times that of one from Longio.

Longio was not the first Chinese watch brand to offer a tourbillon movement. I don't know who was, or how much lower or high in price they are. I do know that there are many out there with much lower quality tourbillon movements than what Longio offers. I am not an expert of Chinese tourbillon movements, so I can only comment on what I know compared to the Europeans. Even though Longio doesn't give its tourbillon and movement the same type of hand decoration, you still have actual people putting these watches together. This is just the type of thing that requires skill and hands-on treatment. A tourbillon is not easy to make or put together. Thus I know that like the Europeans, there must be someone that is actually hand-assembling these movements. Accuracy is actually on par or a little bit off most European tourbillon movements with deviation of about 10-25 seconds a day. This might seem like a lot, but actually isn't that off from what you find else where. While Tourbillon movements seem to suggest they make watches more accurate, this isn't true. There are fun toys to watch, but functionally don't really do anything. Their main allure is their complexity, the novelty of watching them in action, and the emotion that is built around them. For a watch to be a COSC Chronometer, it can still be off by about 6 seconds a day, and there are very few COSC certified tourbillon watches out there. So I can freely say that this Chinese tourbillon movement isn't that far off from your "run of the mill" Swiss tourbillon movement.

Another fun fact - Longio gives its tourbillon movements a lifetime warranty. You'll need to contact Longio for more details on that, but that does reassure me about having concerns with the longevity of quality of the watch movement. If it breaks, looks like Longio has your back.

You should understand that all tourbillon movements are more delicate than standard mechanical movements. This applies to any such style movement watch. So the aggressive sport like nature of the Telamon diver is a bit of an irony. "Gentle diving (no matter how deep up to 1000 meters) should be OK, but don't take the watch out on vigorous hikes, bike rides, or other "shock" prone activities. Look, if you are the type of person that can't seem to keep their watch from being their personal shield, then a tourbillon watch (of any maker) isn't gonna be right for you. There are lots of other more shock resistant watches to meet your clumsy needs. If you can take care of your watch a bit, treating it like a precious mechanical object that it is, then you should consider the strong allure of the most expensive and emotionally charged style of complication out there - the tourbillon. Oh, yea, you need to be able and afford it too. But that comes much closer to reality with the Telamon.

Now for the rest of the watch. You know... what really matters more of the time. The Longio Telamon is a bigger watch at 47mm wide in steel and tall at 18mm high. It isn't light either. Though placing it on the included rubber strap will lighten the load. The fragile types that need a light watch however, should go get themselves a plastic Swatch, I've got a nice one for you right here. As a diver style watch, the Telamon works nicely. The tall case has a nicely rotating diver's bezel (with a lume tip) that moves satisfyingly and has good style. The case is 1000 meters water resistant, has a helium escape valve, and the caseback has a fun little engraving of a diver (silly and cute looking). I like the lightheartedness of the image combined with the aggressive stance of the watch. Watch crystal is sapphire, and AR coated I believe. Legibility is good, and the dial has a nice color contrast to it. The hour markers are large enough, and while they are disrupted by the tourbillon, the chapter ring hour and minute indicators continue.Â I enjoy the look of the dial, and it is easy to live with. The tourbillon is apparent, and made more so by the skeletonzied hands. Plus, I like that the hour markers are applied. The hand tips and hour markers are coated with a SuperLumiNova that glows blue, but for some reason seems to require a lot of light to charge. Also, the hands are a bit short, and I would have liked for them to be a bit more conspicuous on the dial. Problem is that the hour markers and the tips of the hands are similar sizes, so they get mixed together mentally a bit. These items aren't a big deal, but are certainly areas for Longio to improve upon.

Wearing the watch is more comfortable than the jagged edges of the case would have you believe. Although heavy, the case stays on your wrist well, and the large lugs are curved to help keep it there. I am genuinely fond of the style. I think the Telamon looks damn cool, and I always feel good wearing it. It is as though the case style is the main allure, and the tourbillon is the icing on the cake. The bracelet is interesting. Seeing early images of it, I wasn't sure whether I would dig it, but I do. It moves very smoothly and is comfortable. Although the watch has some sharper edges around it, none are a bother. Though if you manually wind the watch a lot you need to hold the crown a bit on the outside as you can otherwise rub up against some angled surfaces.

The 24mm wide bracelet is chunky and have lots of brushed surfaces like the case. Even though no parts of the case are mirror polished,Â having so many angles gives the watch a shiny look when it moves around in the light. The neat looking Longio logo is engraved on the crowns and on the deployment clasp. The claps is push button operated, and works much more nicely than a lot of other Chinese watch bracelets I have experienced. It also has a cool ratcheted divers extension that is similar to the one on this Orient 1000m Diver watch. Meaning you can extend it at different lengths, all while you are still wearing the watch. That feature, I quite like.

This review needs to come to a close because there is only so much you will read. In short, the Longio Telamon Tourbillon watch is a cool looking diver's watch with a unique spirit and an automatic tourbillon movement. While it does not have the level of refinement that a European tourbillon watch has, it is no where near as expensive. At $7,999, the Longio Telamon Tourbillon is an expensive dive watch and an inexpensive tourbillon. They hope that finding a place somewhere in the middle they will get a good audience. I don't think anyone will be disappointed with the watch at all, but it isn't the same as a European style watch. If you are looking for a unique dive watch that isn't like the majority of them out there, it is a good option. It is also a good choice for those who want a tourbillon and either can't afford the $50,000 plus prices it costs to get Swiss one, or simply want a starter tourbillon piece. Of course there is the style of the watch as well that should appeal to more than a few people. Perhaps Longio will make a non tourbillon version of the Telamon as well, that should sell quite nicely I imagine.

Longio SG3824E Automatic Watch Review

This is a very fine watch from China. I've mostly been exposed to low quality Chinese watches that I think have skewed my perception of what the country in capable of. Don't let the mass amount of not so great Chinese watches overshadow the good stuff that is available.

It makes sense that China produces decent watches. Wealthy Chinese people are voracious watch lovers.Â Hong Kong alone is one of the largest watch markets in the world and it is but one city. For a few years now, major Swiss watch makers have been eying the impressive economic growth of China. Watch stores are opening up faster than anywhere else. But before Chinese people were buying nice watches, they were making nice watches. A hidden little secret of European watch makers is that much that goes into their "Swiss Made" watches is actually made in China. This has to do with the rules around the term " Swiss Made" and what that means. It mostly refers to the movement, and where the movement was assembled. Cases to clasps, and crystals to cogs are all to be found from reputable Chinese suppliers. Even parts that go into Swiss Made watches often have Chinese origin. There is nothing wrong with this, as quality must always be high. Over the last decade or so, China has really learned how to make some nice watches.

At some point they just decided, "hey, we will make our own watches, with our own name." As opposed to making watches for other people, China still is lacking in the communication and marketing side of things. In that department, Europeans and Americans will always do better. That still should not mean that nice Asian watches should be overlooked. In addition to the newer Longio, a popular Chinese watch maker is Sea-Gull. You can find a review of a Sea-Gull watch here on aBlogtoRead.com. Longio is different than Sea-Gull, and this Automatic SG3842E watch is a different, and more luxurious beast.

Like most Chinese watch makers, Longio started out as an OEM watch maker (and still is one). This means that they are an "original equipment manufacturer" for other watch brands. Essentially, they make all or part of the watch, while someone else puts their name on it. Longio eventually decided that they want to put their own name on watch. One thing that is most striking about Longio watches is that they are original. The Chinese are known for copying things that others have made. The design of this watch is totally original though. We begin to see character and design that is innately regional to Hong Kong and the surrounding areas. It took Japan a long time before the watches they made had a Japanese character to them. China however is able to learn these lessons observing them from afar, and are already making watches that suit them, not just others.

One of Longio's specialties is making actual tourbillon movement. The ultra complex mechanical wonders that are a right of passage in themselves to be able and manufacture. They offer tourbillon movement based watches starting at about $3,600. A price that blows away European offerings. No, I don't think that Longio's tourbillon movements are as good as what you can get from the Swiss, but how much does that matter for what is essentially a novelty movement. No one argues that a tourbillon is useful - they are merely fun to watch. And for a more reasonable price, you can get one too from Longio. I discussed their 1000 meter tourbillon diving watch here.

This review however is on one of their automatic mechanical watches (without a tourbillon). The movement is a Swiss ETA 2824-2 movement. I am quite impressed with Longio's implementation and adjusting of the movement. It is quite accurate, easy to operate, and smooth. Power reserve is 40 hours. In time, the Chinese will be making their own movements that are able to compete better with Swiss ones, compared with what they make today. For now, the Chinese are adept at working with Swiss movements.

You can see the movement operating through the sapphire caseback window of the watch. It is no nonsense with a signed automatic rotor and some brass toned gears. Like I said, I was actually impressed with the level of accuracy, which is the most important point for me. Operating the movement is as you would expect, which is of course also important. A real high point of the watch is the case. You can see the break out diagram of its various pieces. The design unique, and the case is well made. You can see that the lugs are part of the lower section. This is easiest for manufacturing. The way it is done is not exactly how the Swiss would have done it, but it is an efficient way of doing it. You can tell in the images that the metal was well cut, and polished nicely. There is an impressive amount of contrast polishing on the case as well. For instance, you can see that horizontal lines on the case side are mirror polished on the outside, and done in a satin tone on the inside. A tough little thing to do. The top of the bezel is brushed, while the diagonal edges of it are polished. The case back screws down, and the entire watch is water resistant to 100 meters. Size of the case is large at 46m wide (a nice size for the design, and it is just under 14mm thick.

The dial crystal is sapphire, seeing into the easy to read face. Here you have a lot of unique character. The outside portion of the dial is done in mother-of-pearl, with applied Arabic numerals over it in black. There is also a minute scale in white. The center of the dial is nicely textured with an attractive patterning and segments for the text and Longio logo. Even the date window is done nicely with faceted edging. A smaller textures black ring sits on the outer most periphery of the dial framing the entire face well.

I love the dauphine hands on the dial. They are highly polished and faceted with lume in the center. The large hands are the proper size for the dial, and really complete the look. Plus, their high polish stands out making the watch quite legible. I suspect that the dial design is not something the Europeans would have made. It is a purely Asian style design, and I like that. Part of having a well-rounded watch collection is having items from all types of watches makers, coming from all types of cultures. This is the art side of watch making.

The Longio Automatic SG3824E watch comes on a nice reptile embossed black leather strap with a nice butterfly fold over clasp. For what you get, the price is reasonable at $690. Longio is serious about their watches, and I am not the only person I know that likes their stuff. It even comes in a nice box. If you are looking for a nice quality Chinese watch, with region character, and years of know-how to understand what goes into watch making, a Longio watch is a good choice.

Longio 1000m Diving Tourbillon Watch

Remember the Chinese watch maker Longio? I talked about them here when discussing their first tourbillon watches. I applauded the Hong Kong based watch maker for having the courage to thrust itself in the tourbillon watch market that is dominated by European watch companies that have the process down pretty well. China's strength is in ingenuity and keeping costs low. The highly sought after tourbillon complication could be had from Longio at a fraction of what the European makers charge. Not that Chinese tourbillon watches are a replacement for the Europeans, but it is was certainly a knock on the door of the stalwart giants.

Now comes Longio's second tourbillon watch, the yet to be properly named 1000m Diving Tourbillon. Diver tourbillon watches aren't new, but this combination of 1000m water resistant case, sporty looks, and cost of about $8,000 simply cannot be found in any European watch for double, triple, or even quadruple the cost. In fact most European diving tourbillon watches cost north of $100,000. So while $8,000 sure isn't cheap, it is a bargain compared to the competition. As a special benefit to Longio, it is part of a company that produces many watch parts for German and Swiss watch makers. The only difference here is that it bears a name that is openly Chinese in origin.

I am surprised by this watch actually. The aggressive styling is pretty cool looking. Certainly a departure from the blase Chinese designed watches we've come to easily disregard. It has an attractive but simple modern appeal, and would standout nicely. The case itself is a large 47mm wide, and comes with the metal bracelet and rubber strap (24mm wide). It isn't going to win any design awards, but it isn't half bad. The bracelet looks interesting as well, something I'd like to inspect a bit more. Inside the watch is the SG3829 automatic mechanical tourbillon movement. The tourbillon is an actual tourbillon as you'd come to expect, and it rotates once each 60 seconds. The movement is acceptable, and interesting to view. It doesn't have nearly the refinement of a Swiss or German movement, but again, think of the cost. Accuracy is also less that its European counterparts, but not by as much as you'd think. It took the Europeans how long to get a decent tourbillon movement into a watch? Decades probably. And in just a few years here is China with their own. China will never beat Europe when it comes to quality or refinement, but it will always beat them when it comes to speed - just a different mentality at work.

The $8,000 question (literally) is whether buyers are going to be taken enough by the watch to buy it. No one will argue that the watch is unattractive, as it clearly has its merits, and as 1000 meter diver it is at least made solidly. The tourbillon movement has always been about enjoyment in watching it operate. The question is whether enough people will be taken by the design plus the mechanics to appreciate it as a worthy alternative given the less expensive, but still expensive price. Longio's challenge will be to show customers what goes into the creation of each of its tourbillon watches. Chinese firms have always had a weak communication ability in terms of "speaking" to Western nations - so Longio will likely need to reach out to external sources to gets its messages across. Longio Tourbillon Watches: Chinese Watchmaking Pride

While many companies won't like me saying this, a less than announced fact is that many watch makers these days have some or most of their parts made in China (movements often included). Even many high-end watch makers likely have something in the construction of the watch that is of Chinese origin. One exception are the rare (and expensive) watches with the Seal of Geneva, meaning they are the most Swiss made, "Swiss Made" watches around.

Is it a bad thing that watch parts are coming from China? Not necessarily. Like most places, China produces good and bad things. In a culture that celebrates speed and volume, as well as inexpensive manufacturing, the common promise has been something like "70% of the quality that you are used to, for 30% of the price." Most manufactures simply can't say no to that. Especially with many local (outside of China) production costs. This fact has resulted in a perception that Chinese goods are not as well made as those costing more. Well, you do get what you pay for. That fact does not always apply to Chinese goods. While China does make a lot-Â less than stellar quality goods, that isn't to say they can't get things right when they want to.

Focus on Hong Kong and the rise of watch product demand in China. In 2008, China was one of the largest growth markets for watches. Not to mention Hong Kong which has been the perennial watch purchasing capital for decades (not just in China, but in the world). In a place that has an endless hunger for watches - especially foreign made watches - it was only a matter of time before they got into the game. I don't know exactly when China started to produce watch parts and/or whole watches, but the industry is beginning to mature. Like the inevitability of the Chinese-made car being sold in US dealers, we are starting to see world class watches being made in China as their own brands, not simply as part suppliers.

Longio Watches has been the back-bone of a few popular watch companies that you are probably aware of. While who they supply and work for is a secret, it is no secret that Longio makes watches under their own name now. They typically use a number of different brands (the Chinese never were very good at branding to conform with Western ideals), but there are some interesting pieces now being offered - several thousand dollar timepieces.

This might be the first time you are looking at two genuine Chinese tourbillon movement watches. Real tourbillon movements with original designs. Here are some basic specs straight from Longio:

These aren't quite on par with European tourbillon movements in terms of performance, construction, or accuracy, but they are much cheaper. The SG3824 (without the moon phase) is $3,600.00 and the SG3826 moon phase is $9,999.00. These aren't cheap prices by any means, but you can't get a European tourbillon based movement watch for under $30,000 (average price of $50,000 - $100,000). Like I said earlier, 70% of the quality for 30% of the price (or some other ratio that communicates the same idea). Having said that, the designs aren't half bad. There is unmistakable Asian art and architectural influence in the designs of the two watches, especially in the face and case construction. Looking closely at the watches you can't tell that things are not quite as finely milled or cut as in European watches, but it is pretty good. It will take a while - if it happens at all - for Chinese and other Asian high-end watches to catch up with European watch making standards that have been set for decades, though this is a good step in that direction.

What I like best about these watches is the pride you can sense in them. It is as if the background suppliers are proudly shouting that they too can have a face to their watches, and do more than work in the shadows while others take all the credit. I don't know what type of market Chinese watches will have outside of Asian. Hong Kong based watch companies will find a niche to compete with Japanese and European watches, I am sure. There is a space between the high-tech watches from Japan and the established luxury timepieces from Europe for a new market for relatively inexpensive formal dress watches with global appeal. The next step for Chinese watches (if the choose to do it) is marketing; telling the world what they are about and what they can do. So until then we can only keep watch.
