Marcello C. Hydrox Watch

I really like Marcello C. watches even though most of their watches are more or less "revisions" of the designs of other brands. I am usually less friendly when a brand doesn't offer up too much originality, but Marcello C. has a soft place on my heart for a few reasons. First, I like their quality. I have a few of their pieces and can say that despite what you think of the origin of their designs, they do sell nicely made watches which are a good value.

Second, a Marcello C. watch was my very first mechanical acquisition. This was about 8 - 9 years ago. That was a Nettuno 3 watch, and I eventually reviewed it here a while back. Marcello C. is a German based brand but had/has a US operation out of Minnesota. Their US website has been up and down, so I am not totally sure what is going on with them. You can always visit their German site and try to order watches by asking (by e-mailing them).

Anyhow, here is a new watch from Marcello C. called the Hydrox. Yes, it does have (a lot) of IWC Aquatimer influence, as well as a few other popular dive watches, but it really is a nice looking re-hash timepiece. The Hydrox will be in steel and 43mm wide. There will be a polished version and a PVD black version. Marcello C. does dive watches really nicely, so I am expecting good things out of this one. Water resistance is 300 meters while the crystal is sapphire and should be AR coated. The hour markers are large and applied, while the dial has a complex looking design to it and looks to be offered in a few colors (at least black with red, blue, or orange). Marcello C. divers have suffered from low levels of lume in the past, but this piece might remedy that with the large amounts of SuperLumiNova on the hands and hour markers.

Design of the bezel is adequate. I doubt Marcello C. will use a sapphire crystal overlay like IWC does, but it should be nice nonetheless (likely an aluminum insert). The bezel design looks to be nicely integrated with the dial - which is nice. The watch face should be really easy to read, and I like the symmetrical placement of the date. Little details such as the date disc being black on the PVD models shows the type of attention that I have always admired Marcello C. watches for having.

While a silicone strap will be included with the Hyrdox, the metal bracelet looks to be appealing. It also reminds me of bracelet designs found on Seiko Ananta watches, Montblack Star Sport models, and a few others. This is due to the raised lugs that should have polished beveled edging.

Inside the Hydrox is an ETA 2824-2 automatic that Marcello C. prefers to work with. The price of the Hyrdox is $1,398, which isn't too bad. A bit more for the black PVD version at $1,548. I am eager to see this piece in the flesh to determine is Marcello C. should still hold a high place in my heart as it does now. Availability now.

Marcello C. Nettuno Bi-Color Chronograph Watch

You don't see combinations like this very often. Here, German Marcello C. has fitted their Nettuno Chronograph watch with a PVD black bezel and PVD black pushers and crown, against a stainless steel case. I think it is a very attractive combo. The look results in sort of a two-tone look that is quite popular these days. It makes the watch very noticeable as well - being more "striking" than models without the color combo. This is the first ever use of PVD in the Nettuno watch collection that I am aware of as well. You will notice of course that there are "mirror" image watches here. As one of the Nettuno Bi-Color Chronograph watches has a steel case with black pushers and bezel, the other version has a PVD black case with steel pushers and a steel bezel. Pretty cool right? Further, the PVD cased version comes with a totally PVD coated bracelet that ought to be really nice. This is one of the best diver's style bracelets on the market that I've experienced, and I'd love to experience it in all black. The Nettuno Chronograph is fitted with a hardy ETA Valjoux 7750 automatic movement in a 40mm wide case. This is of the more soberly sized diver's watches out there that are still professional grade in my opinion. The new Bi-Color edition shares all the great parts of the original Nettuno Chronograph but with the new color options,. There is also the special textured black leather strap with contrast stitching that fits so well with the look of the case. A metal bracelet is of course available. You'll appreciate that the Nettuno Chronograph is a function first watch. Meaning that things are designed so that watch is easy to read and functional. Thus, looking at the dials and hands of the watch indicates that they were designed to be relied upon, rather than merely for style (that the watch looks nice is good too). Marcello C. is known for their attention to details. A good example of this is that this new Bi-Color collection of Nettuno Chronograph watches uses a black colored date disc rather than the standard white. This is a small touch, but really helps give the Bi-Color versions of the watch their own character apart from the standard models. The watch is a true diver and water resistant to 300 meters. Overall it is an excellent watch. The price for the standard version of the Marcello C. Nettuno Chronograph is about $2,300 (a good value). I expect that the Nettuno Bi-Color Chronograph will be just a bit more, but not significantly much. Exclusive: New Marcello C. Diavolo Automatic Watch

Here is the brand new Marcello C. Diavolo Automatic, a three hand version of the Diavolo Chronograph that was released last year. I reviewed the Marcello C. Diavolo Chronograph here to my delight. Marcello C. chose to take a very different direction with the Diavolo Automatic, and the result looks very interesting and attractive similarly, but in a different manner in comparison to the original chronograph. Marcello C. obviously spent their time ensuring that the Diavolo Automatic has a distinct high-end sporty look. This particular model is in blue, with a deep blue dial and blue leather strap. Several color option swill be available.

The most notable new feature is the guilloche machine engraved dial. See the images for a closeup of the fine decoration that isn't at all distracting. It works very well with the substantial hour indicators. Best part is how the 12, 3, 6, and 9 o'clock hour indicators are all faceted. Never cliche, the Diavolo is an extremely well polished watch. The mirror finish makes it a grandly assertive statement on your wrist - and at about 44mm wide, people will notice. While it features the same case as the chronograph version of the Diavolo is just feels so different. The dial of the watch has been influenced by one of my favorite luxury sport watches of all time, the Roger Dubuis Easy Diver SAW K10 watch. You'll notice the similar hour indicators. This is no accident, and Marcello C. specifically wanted to make sure it reminded people of one of the best looking diving watches out there. The difference is that while the Roger Dubuis is Swiss luxury watch priced in the many thousands of dollars - the Marcello C. Diavolo will be under $1000 (including overnight shipping).

Inside the watch is a ETA automatic 2824-2 movement visible through the sapphire caseback. A sapphire crystal is affixed to the top of the watch as well. The watch also features 200 meters of water resistance, and a screw rod for the strap as opposed to a spring bar. The crown of the Diavolo is also a high point. It is large and easy to operate, and features a luminous inlay with Marcello C.'s flying goose logo. Marcello C. has always been excellent when it comes to fit & finish, with a study weighty feel that feel put together well. . The Diavolo is a solid watch all around, and I am impressed by the unique choice of styling in the new version of the timepiece. Like I said, the price is on par with current market expectations and still represents a magic touch that leaves you wondering at how they can offer the watch at so low a price for what you get.

Rare Flagship Marcello C. Senatore Chronograph Watch Available

This is a watch that I have wanted for a long time. These are almost never available from independent sellers, and it is a rare luxury to see one offered at less than retail. This is the Marcello C. Senatore watch, that I have mentioned before. This timepiece has a design intentionally reminiscent of the Rolex Daytona. It isn't a clone, it just uses some of the same design principles, and that is OK. The 42.5mm wide watch has a 22mm wide bracelet making it a good size, and actually a bit bigger than the Daytona.

I really like how German Marcello C. is able to modify the automatic Valjoux 7750 movement to give it a tri-compax layout. This is more attractive that the 7750's standard layout. The dial hands and main hands are strong looking and legible. Legible faceted hour markers look great, while the subdial design hearkens the Daytona perfectly.

The bracelet is very different on the Marcello C. Senatore. It has a very fashionable look, which is an interesting contrast from the functional look of the watch face. With the wide inner link, contrasting polish, and the gaps which give it a very smooth flow. The butterfly deployment is comfortable to use, and I like that Marcello C. places smaller links in addition to the normal size links so that fitting the bracelet is more precise. Because this is the flagship Marcello C. watch is comes in the best possible watch box, which is a lot more substantial that what comes with most of the watches.

Retail is $3,600, but this mint condition preowned copy is being offered at just $2,300. That is a lot off the retail price, and probably the best deal you are gonna find. Even if you offer the seller a bit less, I am sure this beautiful Marcello C. Senatore with a silver-toned faced could be yours.

Mint Marcello C. Nettuno 3 Watch In Black Available Now

Even though I gave the Marcello C. Nettuno 3 a glowing review where I solidified my feelings, I continue to have positive emotions about this watch. It always seems to be my default watch that goes with everything, and I have no other watch that is as legible. Hell, I am wearing the watch right now as I write this. Almost everything on the watch is perfect down to the small details. It gets things right that other watches seem to miss. For example, Marcello C. makes the hands the prefect length and width. This is a little touch, but you'd be surprised how many companies just can't figure it out.

My lasting experience with the Marcello C. Nettuno 3 is that the watch just won't quite. The lasting visual appeal and ruggedness have stood up for years. This isn't unworthy praise, but the voice of an impassioned owner. It is just a great watch, period. While no one watch will satisfy this crazed watch enthusiast, if I had to choose one to wear each day, it may very well be this Nettuno 3.

So when one of these watches, especially one in superb condition becomes available. I want to mention it. You can totally go to Marcelloc-watches.com and get a brand new one. It would be worth every penny of the $850 price, but there is one on eBay, starting at $250 with a buy it now of $400 which is just a great deal. And you know how much I love mentioning a good deal. The Marcello C. Senatore, A Curious Wink To The Rolex Daytona That I Want To Get My Hands On

I've said some negative things about Rolex. I think they act really slow, haven't innovated much lately, and play it too safe. Regardless, Rolex has a few powerful classic designs under its belt. The two major ones for me are the Submariner lines, and the Daytona. Speaking of the Daytona, I understand that it is one of the most desirable watches on the planet from a demand standpoint, meaning more people want one, that can get one. Rolex has taken this opportunity to increase the prices dramatically. Meaning you can't really get one for under $10k. Steep.

Well what do you do when you want a something like a Daytona, but can't afford or get one. Sure there are legions of "imitations" that are simple low cost alternatives or play out fakes, but you aren't that type of person? You like the style, but you want something nice you can be proud of on your wrist. For me, this is a totally logical approach to satisfying a need. Others feel that if you can't afford a Rolex, you don't deserve to wear the style. Well let those stop here, and the rest of you can keep reading.

Marcello C. is a great German brand, that I love to talk about. I own four of their watches at the moment, and have been extremely satisfied with my ownership experience. One watch I've been curious about is their Senatore. A Rolex Daytona inspired watch, that certainly has a lot of Marcello C. in it. You'll notice a lot of their limited edition Titanium Tridente diver watch in the Senatore (large 12, and the hands). There is also a wonderfully cohesive look that takes the Daytona style, and moves is a different, dare I say Teutonic, direction. My model of choice is the Marcello C. Senatore 2020.4, made in the color scheme of the Rolex Cosmograph Daytona. The black face with the red trim is snazzy. The tri-compax layout of the chronograph dials, never had a more flattering frame, and the red arrow tipped seconds counter hand for the chronograph fits nicely in place. Marcello C. uses a Valjoux 7750 automatic movement which is about as trusted a movement as you can get.

An interesting thing about the Senatore is bracelet with the wide middle link. I'd love to see how this looks, but I have a feeling it gives the watch a really impressive look on your wrist. The bracelet is 22mm wide, while the case is 42.5mm wide. I am not sure how I feel about the see-through caseback window being mineral glass, but the crystal on the face is sapphire of course. This watch actually represents the most expensive, non-precious metal watch that Marcello C. makes. At a current price of over $3,600, it is several times more than Marcello C. largest seller, the sub $1000 Nettuno 3. You do have to consider the price of a Rolex Daytona too, and the fact that a Marcello C. is a finely made watch, with little comparison.

The Marcello C. Senatore 2020.4 is only sold in Europe, but other Senatore models are offered in the US. I'd love to get my hands on one of these watches, and if I do, you'll hear all about it.

Cousins Compared! Considering The Differences Between The Marcello C. Nettuno 3 And Tridente Dive Watches

Being a fan of Marcello C. watches, it quickly became clear to me that the Nettuno 3 and Tridente watches were very similar. Now owning both watches, I can say that while these watches look similar, and share certain components, they are two different watches, both useful and worth coveting in their own degree. The Marcello C. Nettuno 3 and Tridente models are both traditionally designed diver's watches, playing an homage to the Rolex Submariner. In fact, most people seeing these watches immediately think these are Rolex watches. Upon this occurring, I point out, in a friendly fashion that these are in fact very high quality German watches that in my opinion are just as good, if not better than the Rolex Submariner line, especially considering the vast price difference. One cannot deny the appeal in the name "Rolex." Rolex spends more money on advertising than almost all other watch companies combined retaining this high image of itself. Regardless, you literally pay for a name, and while Rolex watches are high quality, this is not to say there are not other very good watches out there, many which far exceed Rolex standards.

The two Marcello C. watches also share the same movement. The workhorse ETA 2824-2 automatic mechanical movement, which performs at chronometer levels in both watches. Visually, they share the same functions and design as well. Hands, dial, bracelet, and colors are all the same in appearance, although larger on the Tridente to match the proportions. The differences between the two watches come in two areas, physical dimensions, and engineering for extreme diving conditions. The Tridente also has some minor, but noticeable cosmetic enhancements.

Of course, to most of you, the biggest difference between the two watches is the price. Currently, the Marcello C. Nettuno 3 (with the 2824-2 movement or Sellita equivalent) is about $870 while the Marcello C. Tridente (also with a 2824-2 movement) is about $1430. This is a large disparity to the naked eye, but you need to look closer to understand the difference in value. Let me be clear that personally owning both of these watches, I can highly recommend each of them independently, but the differences do exist.

Lets talk about relief vs. etching/engraving. The former refers to practice of creating an image that rises from a surface, while the latter refer to the practice are carving into a surface. Relief work is more complex, and more expensive. A well tuned laser or etching tool can easily engrave a number of patterns, but relief work requires special equipment, especially with a high relief, which requires the design to be part of the actual piece it is located on. This is one area where the Nettuno 3 and Tridente differ. The Marcello C. diving watch logo exists on both the crown of the watch, and on the caseback. On the Nettuno 3, the design is etched into the metal, while on the Tridente, the design is done in relief, popping out at you. This element perhaps does not go to the heart of functionality, but is a notable aesthetic feature where the two watches differ. Relief logos are more expensive. As such, the more expensive Tridente exhibits more expensive aesthetic work.

The Nettuno 3 and Tridente exhibit different size dimensions in key areas. The Nettuno 3 is a 40mm case, while the Tridente is 43.8mm. The almost 4mm difference is well noticed and you can see in the images that the Tridente has a more powerful footprint that the Nettuno 3. Also, the Tridente is about 2mm or so thicker than the Nettuno 3, meaning it rises of your wrist a bit more. It also goes to say that the Tridente is a heavier watch because of the increased amount of steel. Your wrist of course will decide your best size, but sometimes I really like the feel of a larger watch. The Tridente also has a considerably larger crown, which is very easy to use. Both the Nettuno 3 and Tridente have excellent crowns that are enjoyable to operate, but the larger Tridente crown is more suited to operation with gloves. Because the face of the Tridente is larger, each element on the face is likewise enhanced in size. The hands are more striking in their bigger size, which compliment the traditional dive watch look very well. Another minor difference is the depth rating indicator on the face of the watch which is written in white on the Nettuno 3 and red on the Tridente.

The Nettuno 3 and Tridente share bracelet designs but the dimensions are a bit different. The Nettuno 3 bracelet is 20mm wide, and the Tridente bracelet is 22mm and a bit more thick, and also features flexible inner links. Frankly, I find both watches to extremely comfortable. I also feel comfortable saying this having worn many different watch bracelets. Sizing the bracelets is easy if you have the right tools. They each use screws in the links for easier changing. I do recommend however having a high quality screw driver which is the right size, else you will run into trouble. The screws are in tight (for a good reason), and are of the same high quality steel as the rest of the watch. An interesting feature of the Tridente is that it offers a removable bracelet extension. Both watches have a bracelet extension (used to make the watch fit over a diving suit), but the extension can be removed on the Tridente if you do not plan on using it. This is a nice option to have (as I have admittedly never used the diving extension). A minor issue with the Tridente that I own due to the fact that I purchased it new, is that the clasp on the bracelet is extremely tight closing until you wear it in a bit. This is a known issue among watches that I have experienced with other brands such as Tag Heuer. It basically means that taking off your watch requires some prying power when you first get it. Not a big deal, but it amuses me that like a car, you need to "break in" a new watch.

Both the Nettuno 3 and Tridente are versatile diving watches, but the Tridente can take you more places, and survive. The Nettuno 3 has the standard 300 meter (about 660 feet) water resistance of a "typical diving watch," while the Tridente is rated to go 1000 meters (about 3300 feet) below the surface. You might be thinking to yourself, "well, I will never dive to either of those max depths," but there is more to just water resistance in a watch's depth rating. In fact, watch companies know that most people don't use their watches to test the limits of the ocean, and depth ratings can sometimes be used as a measurement of how rugged or hardy a watch can be. A high depth rating means a thicker sapphire crystal, more intense sealing around the inside of the caseback, pushers, and crown, along with thicker materials all around. In this case, while both the Marcello C. Nettuno 3 and Tridente are constructed from high grade steel, the Tridente is a bit heftier, and has a thicker sapphire crystal. In addition, it has a more sophisticated gasket system in the crown, and one of the best movement shock protection systems around. Yes, it is true that both the Nettuno 3 and Tridente models are very solid and reliable watches, the Tridente has a bit more "oomph," that helps justify the premium.

When you get your Nettuno 3 or Tridente, Marcello C. provides a really nice leather case for them, but they are different for each watch. The Nettuno 3 comes in a pouch of sorts made for a single watch, while the Tridente has a zippered case with two compartments so that you can travel with two watches. Nice thing to have with a new watch. Watch "presentation" is a big deal when buying a new watch, but I really like it when the case that comes with a watch is one that can be used if you want to carry it around or travel. Most large square boxes are anything but practical for such use. It is good that Marcello C. figures you'll want a case that you might use, as opposed to stowing it somewhere because it is too nice to throw away, but functionally useless.

These are important items to understand, because watch companies often feel a bit torn when it comes to displaying or sharing information. On the one hand, you need to provide the customer with relevant and important data about purchases, but at the same time, you don't want to alienate anyone. If you are this far in the article, you obviously care, but if you are the type shopping for style only, too much information can be a hindrance to purchase. The more information a consumer has available, the more decisions they have to make before purchase, and it is rare for a company to have the best product across the board, so they just show what they think you need to have. Marcello C., you don't need be so cautious. You have a great line of watches, so be proud of every detail, no matter how insignificant you think it might be. A few of us obviously love knowing about it.

There you have it. Two equally wonderful watches, with important differences. I have given both the Nettuno 3 and Tridente ample wrist time, and can safely say that they are both worthwhile watches to own. It is not a matter of recommending one over the other, but rather a determination based upon your budget and needs. For me, I'll take them both.

Consider A Nice Silver Faced Watch For That Formal Tuxedo Occassion

Yesterday I attended a very nice family wedding, which of course is not typically news for the blog, but this time there are a minor detail that sparked a worthwhile mention. The groom, who I had met for the first time on the day of the wedding instantly impressed me, making me feel extra good about his entrance into the extended family. The reason for my quick fondness was the fact that he was wearing a rare watch that I owned as well. Of course, I could not dismiss his impeccable demeanor which might have also had something to do with my approval.

Surely you are each aware of my rich capacity to continually discuss the German Marcello C. brand of watches. Having a few of these excellent timepieces, I realize that ownership of a Marcello C watch is a rare treat. There just aren't that many of them out there, and in the US you need to be actually looking for the watch to find it. So you can imagine how excited I was to see the groom wearing a shiny silver faced Marcello C. Nettuno 3 with his formal tuxedo on the day of his wedding. An honor for the watch, and the occasion.

The Marcello C. Nettuno 3 is an amazing watch for its looks and value. I reviewed the Nettuno 3 here, so my extended thoughts on the watch can be further digested. It got me thinking how nice a silver faced watch on a steel bracelet looks with a formal tuxedo. I would suggest that for an apt balance of masculinity and formal aesthetic, just such a watch should be adorned. A benefit to the styling of the classic diver's watch that the Nettuno 3 is, presents itself in how well the watch is able to fit in to so many occasions.

You'll no doubt agree it is a sharp look, and here are some visual examples of other silver faced watches that also look nice with the white tie experience. In addition to the Marcello C. Nettuno 3, is also a Marcello C. Senatore with a silver face, a gent's Xemex Avenue with its modern and sophisticated approach, along with the highly traditional IWC Mark XV / Spitfire line of pilot inspired watches. Each I would argue is a perfect "marriage" with a formal tuxedo (typically has a white tie).

These might not be the traditional watches worn to such formal events, but they are better choices for the modern male who wants a dynamic watch that fits well in to such a role, yes is not limited by it. We need a watch that looks good in a tux, looks good at work, and looks good during play. The traditional formal watch does not necessarily do this, but I think you will agree each of these would. Marcello C. Diavolo Watch Review: Beneficent Devil In The Details

It is easy to review a watch that fits into a category. You have an established set of criteria to evaluate, and at least a few other watches in that category that you can compare and contrast with the model you review. Even concept and exotic watches lie in their own category, where you can compare such areas like technological feats along with boldness in design. But then, there are watches that simply defy classification, and you need to review them from the most primordial of levels.

I find the Marcello C. Diavolo to exist within its own niche. It is a dress watch, sports watch, fashionable designer watch, and a well engineered precision tool, all in one; while at the same time, you wouldn't necessarily place the Diavolo in any of these categories. It does everything you have come to expect from a nice watch, yet gives you more, extras worth appreciation and mention. No watch is perfect, but the Diavolo's few minor quirks are quickly endearing and give this little devil a personality. A character that you can look forward too, with a lasting effect on your impression of the timepiece.

Before an in depth review of the Marcello C. Diavolo, it is useful to understand the watch's inception, and a bit about Marcello C. a relative new comer in the watch world with an actually impressive record thus far. Marcello C.'s current success is not due to innovation, but rather interpretation. Taking a classic design and producing a high quality example based on a theme or existing concept. This is not to say that Marcello C. is not creative. Far from it, as what Marcello C. does with classic designs is impressive. Being able to creatively mix and match the best features, qualities, and designs for the right look has earned them high accolade among enthusiasts. The brand's Nettuno 3 diving watch is probably their most successful to date. I own two of them and my Marcello C. Nettuno 3 watch review can be seen here. An homage to the Rolex Submariner, it rivals Rolex's looks and quality, for a small fraction of the price. Development went into interpreting what Marcello C. felt was the essence of that style and making the best possible example for under $1000. The success of the Nettuno 3 was all about the proper formulation, but Marcello C. had a lot to work with. The Diavolo is the first men's watch I know of that Marcello C. designed with no previous blue prints (they to have some unique women's watch such as the Vergine line).

The idea for the Diavolo seemed to be the creation of a bold and ubiquitously appealing watch that current Marcello C. fans as well as strangers to the brand could enjoy. The initial phase of design was probably the selection of a movement, which is the highly capable ETA Valjoux 7750 automatic mechanical movement. To me, this is the most comfortable chronograph movement to operate. Press the start pusher on the Diavolo and a large legible second counter hand begins to slide around the face of the watch. I would have liked to see some luminant on the seconds hand for the chronograph complication, but it is so thin, this would have been difficult, and widening it wold have detracted from the overall look. You can measure up to 12 hours of time with the accuracy of 1/5 of a second. The upper and lower registers on the face count minutes and hours, and are easy to see. Marcello C. made a wonderful decision to invert the minute counter so that the hand, while in the default position points down, not up. The hand on the lower hours register points up, so that the chronograph hands point to each other (to the center of the watch), while not in use. This little change drastically improves the symmetry of the watch, and looks quite cool doing so.

In the left center of the dial is the seconds counter for the watch itself. It is tastefully done, as a thick little hand moves purposefully around the counter with indicators, but no number values. This gives it a clean look, and allows for great appreciation of the raised and polished indicators. In fact, all the indicators on the Diavolo are specially placed on the dial and not merely painted on. The indicators are angular (with the exception of the prominent "12" and "6" on the top and bottom), with a thin strip of luminant in the indicators for the watch itself. Other than providing a rich three-dimensional look, the raised indicators make the Diavolo easy to read despite the wealth of lines and contrasts on the face. One thing I would have liked to see is a continuation of the glossy look on the gunmetal gray areas of the dial. The lighter section of the dial is a cream color (other Diavolo models have different color schemes), but could have used a bit of texture in my opinion. Further, the color of date dial through the date window is the stock white, which is a bit lighter than the rest of the face. It isn't easy to notice, but I would have appreciate a custom colored date dial. Perhaps, this is asking for too much, as these dials are part of the movement kit, and great expense and effort would be required in changing the color, even a bit. Very minor issues easily overshadowed by the many benefits of the face and dial. Further, the face is covered by a flush sitting sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating on both the front and back of the crystal. The effect of this is obvious once you see the watch, as light casts no glare to be seen allowing for perfect visibility in any light.

As for the overall look of the face, there is a lot to say. Colors contrasting and a mixture of organic curves with angular lines make for a intriguing look that is hard to classify. Turn the watch around, and it is pleasing to look at from any angle while retaining a sense of symmetry. The menage of circles create shapes within shapes. Each person's eyes will focus on different areas, but the point is that there is a lot to look at. Regardless, this visual sensation does not appreciably detract from legibility thanks to the placement of the shapes and the watch hands.

Personally, I really like the face of the Diavolo. It can take some viewing to really appreciate this very unorthodox design for those who aren't convinced at first. Some have called the design "Italian," and I can see that. In my opinion, the greatest design comparison for Marcello C. in creating the Diavolo is the award-winning Hublot Big Bang. The shapes of the numbers are in a similar font, along with the shape of the number indicators; those being polished rectangles with the thin luminant strips. The Diavolo also shares some subtle similarities with a few Oris watches, that the founder of Marcello C. used to work for. Better yet, the Marcello C. Diavolo shares one of the best features of the Big Bang, which are the hands. Broad as Japanese animation style swords, the hands are sharp and proud with beveled edges stemming from the center. Big hands make a big statement. Even the chronograph and seconds hands share this look. The generous amount of luminant makes them bright in the dark, and a pleasure to look at. The hands are not directly taken from the Big Bang, even though it was released before the Diavolo. Instead, close inspection of the Marcello C. Tridente Chronograph and Senatore watches reveals an evolutionary progression in the design of the hands. It just happens that Marcello C. and Hublot happened to share some common ideas. The Diavolo and the Big Bang are not watches in the same class, so they aren't exactly competitors. The Big Bang's cheapest iteration is about $10,000, while the Diavolo averages at about $2,050. Marcello C. made an excellent choice in emulating a very well received watch. I anticipate the result of this to be a high degree of initial customer recognition with the Diavolo, because of familiarity of the Hublot Big Bang.

The Marcello C. Diavolo has three bezel options. This one is equipped with the notched bezel. There is also a coined edge, and a numbered sporty version. I would have liked the bezel to rotate, but then again, I like rotating bezels on everything because I am obsessed with diving watches. This is not so much an omission as it is a choice of personal function. I don't really miss the rotating bezel, especially because I use it for timing purposes, which can be done with the Diavolo's chronograph. Problem solved. The bezel is actually user interchangeable if you have more than one bezel, which should be available individually from Marcello C. This is a great concept, especially because I am a fan of personalization. This does have the effect of allowing four small screws to be viewable on the sides of the bezel, but this to me, is not a big deal. The case itself is a mix of polished and brushed finishes, with a conservative look, and I particularly like the partially flared and rounded lugs that fit comfortably on the wrist and visually extend it.

Going back to the Diavolo watch case, there are other less noticeable, but impressive elements that would only become apparent if they did not exist. The lugs are slightly curved as to conform to the wrist, while the entire case has no sharp or uncomfortable edges. Despite this, the case retains a well constructed,, angular and crisp look. The sides of the case feature a very sporty matte finish, that immediately turns into a mirrored polish on other surfaces. This visually extends the size of the face while amplifying the shape and curvature. Together these features make for a good-looking comfortable watch, and you'd really only notice them if they did not exist. For example, you don't complain about a comfortable watch, it only becomes an issue when sharp edges dig into your arm. Comfort is just never going to be an issue with the Diavolo in my opinion, as it is ergonomically well designed.

The Diavolo is a large watch, but comfortably so at 44mm. I find that small chronograph watches are just too hard to read to be useful. This is a good blend of size and comfort, even for my relatively small wrist. The watch is secured by a rubber strap with one of the best clasps I have ever had the pleasure of using. Not only does the clasp look awesome (really), but it is a pleasure to use as well. Press the buttons on the side of the clasp to release the buckle (I feel as though I sound like the safety instructions on an airplane), and you see this well engineered mechanism open before your eyes. What makes it so impressive, is the tight connection of the parts. The metal fits so closely together, it is impressive to see how easily it opens and closes with a reassuring "click." The clasp can be operated with one hand, in the dark, or with gloves. For its heft, it is not particularly large on the wrist. The only thing I would add to the clasp is a proud Marcello C. logo, which is curiously absent. However, this lack of logo on the clasp is temporary, and Marcello C. with add a logo on the second run of Diavolo watches. What this means to the collector is that the first fun Diavolo watches have great potential to be sought after collector's items.

The rubber strap is a high quality silicon rubber strap. This makes it very smooth and comfortable. It has a sizable central ridge which gives it a concrete shape, and the edges of the strap swell to match the contours of the lugs. Extra straps can be purchased from Marcello C. if you need a different sized strap. Marcello C. also offers n alligator strap that turn a sporty Diavolo into a dress Diavolo.

Other charming peculiarities can be found in the little things. For example, the watch can be classified as "Swiss Made," though the indicator is not located on the face. You'd think this universal attestation of quality would be right there on the watch face staring at you. Instead, you have a engraved "GERMANY" located inside and on the side of the watch face, waiting for the careful observer to find it. This says to me that Marcello C. is proud of itself as being a German watch maker, but would rather the watch speak for itself, rather than be a location for labels. You will however find the "Swiss Made" indicator on the signed rotor underneath the watch through the viewable case-back, just in case you had any doubts.

The view of the Valjoux 7750 automatic mechanical movement is impressive, but a bit stark. Decoration these days is very popular on movements. There is a machine-finished plate with gold lettering on the rotor that says "Marcello C." and the above mentioned "Swiss Made," not too much else. Germans have a reputation for being functional and utilitarian, offering high value, but when you place a see-through case-back, I like to have a little something extra to look at. Again, I am reminded that this watch is beguiling. I forget the Diavolo is a bargain at about $2,050, especially for what you get, and continue to feel as I look at this watch, that it is something far more expensive.

Other fine details on the Marcello C. Diavolo abound and are a combination of enjoyable aesthetic and ergonomic functionality. You get the distinct impression that a team of dedicated people sat around endlessly to discuss the finer points of the Diavolo's design and construction. Marcello C. wanted to give the Diavolo more interesting screws on the lugs than the typical fare, but at the same time wanted its owner to easily change the strap themselves. So they chose hex screws which look good, but are no so uncommon as to make finding a tool difficult. A dedicated tool is available, given to authorized dealers, and can be purchased separately from Marcello C. There are actually a number of customization options available for the Diavolo, but you need to ask Marcello C. about what they have currently available. If you get a Diavolo watch from Marcello C. directly or an authorized dealer, be sure to ask what else is available for the Diavolo, or any other watch for that matter.

The crown and pushers are excellent. The crown has two rows of notches with a cog-like look for easy operation. The idea was to continue the theme of the notched bezel on the crown. On the tip of the crown is an inset logo with Marcello C.'s flying bird logo. Look closely, and you will notice that the bird is actually a duck, and represents the Minnesota state bird; the common Loon. The logo is also inset with luminant so it gives a nice glow in the dark. A really nice and unexpected touch. The chronograph pushers themselves just beg to pushed, and define the very nature of what a pusher should look like. Nothing too fancy, just well-sized polished steel comfortable under the finger. Although the watch is rated at being water resistant to 200 meters, the crown and pusher do not need to be screwed down as in most watch with such a rating. Instead, special tubes gaskets are used to ensure water protection without having to screw anything down.

Having a rubber strap with a folding metal clasp means that the strap must be cut for size. This is a reality with all such rubber straps, not only the Diavolo. Anyone can size their strap, but doing it with precision is best reserved for an authorized dealer as Marcello C. provides them with the necessary tools. It also follows the legacy idea that watches are purchased from authorized dealers who size and explain the watch functions for the new owner. With today's move towards more remote sales, I find it a benefit of service and consumer assurance to provide printed instructions, which Marcello C. does. In terms of presentation the Marcello C. Diavolo comes in a nice case befitting a watch of its character.

I anticipate success for the Marcello C. Diavolo. A watch with this type of character needs to be advertised , in fact should be for people to genuinely appreciate it. The Diavolo line already has several varieties with different faces and materials. I discussed the Marcello C. Diavolo line a bit here, near the time when they were first announced, and you can see a few of the different models. It is a dynamic watch with many faces (literally). The chronograph Diavolo is water resistant to 200 meters, but a non-chronograph version ("three hand" Diavolo) is in the works, which will likely have an even greater water resistance. This version is likely due sometime this year.

Without any hesitation I can recommend the Marcello C. Diavolo. It is a watch I have thoroughly enjoyed, and find myself taking the time to appreciate it. For a collector, or someone only beginning their infatuation with watches, it is an appropriate choice. Easy to live with, simple to operate, and loaded with character. Whether you like it or not, the Diavolo will be noticed, so expect to provide an introduction to many people, and for that, you'll want to be literate on all its finer elements. So what they say is true, the devil is in the details, and here the devil (Diavolo) it is a friendly beneficent one.
