Nixon Watches Teams Up With The Beastie Boys

Back at Basel 2010 Nixon showed me a few cool watches I was excited to see. They later asked me to not write about them as they were not going to be released. OK, fine. More than a year later and the watches finally show up, Nixon and the partner seemed to work things out. What happened is that these limited edition watches were meant to be released along with the Beastie Boy's new album. The album was delayed, and so was the watch.

Now it seems like things are back on track. Over a year later and the album is just now out. The new album is called "Hot Sauce Committee Part Two," and as a big Beastie Boys fan, I look forward to hearing it. The watches will come in four colors (green, blue, red, and white) and each in the same style. Band member Mike D is on the dial and there is a quote and graphic on the strap. The cases are about 40mm wide and in plastic with Japanese quartz movements.

The image on the watch is of Mike D holding a bottle of some booze. What is amusing is the statement on the strap that says "I accept this award on behalf of the band." Hopefully you get the humor.

Not sure how many of the watches will be made. While they are "limited edition" pieces - inexpensive stuff like this appeals to a mass audience will be produced in large amounts. Nixon will probably make one or two runs while the album is being promoted, and then not make anymore. I think the concept and partnership is pretty cool.

The sale of the watches will further help New York's local non-commercial WKCR-FM radio station operated by Columbia University. Not sure what will be donated, but I expect Nixon to be charitable with the popular radio station. I just wanna see the Beastie Boy rockin this watch. Entry Level Nivrel Grand Guilloche Watch Is A Perfect Gateway To Fine Watch Appreciation

A lot of the time people ask me for advice on buying a watch. Be it for themselves, a loved one, or maybe even a child. I do my best to counsel the, but it is hard to instill the passion I have for watches to someone who is just getting their feet wet in the area of horological enthusiasm. The best approach is to get a watch that is affordable, and allows you to appreciate the complexities and refinement of traditional watch making. Enter this original German Nivrel Grand Guilloche watch. I say 'original' because this watch has subsequently been updated a bit, and this is the original model, but I would argue it is nicer than the update (which is pictured below). The retail on a watch like this is $600-$700. This particular model can be had for $500 or less (with some bargaining) on eBay right now. So only one lucky person will get to have this specific watch.

Nivrel is a line that offers sub-$1000 watches to ones that in the many thousands. This means they have the know how to create something world-class in design and appeal, but can also down market their watches a bit. Nivrel watches have always been known as one of the highest quality affordable German watch, but they are not alone in this distinction. This particular watch embodies a few really nice features. First is the satin and polish finished high-grade steel case that offers a lovely traditional look, as well as durability you can rely on. The guilloche term refers to the machine engraving on the dial of the watch which is often hand done by unique and often antique machinery. Notice the historic font used for the Arabic numbering. Nivrel has experiments on these watch utilizing Arabic and Roman numerals. I tend to think that the Germans are better suited to Arabic numerals, while the Swiss can be left to meddle with Roman numerals.

The hands of the watch are done in a Breguet style, referring to the little round sections on the hands that aid with legibility. Breguet has been making hands in this fashion for literally hundreds of years. Being a traditional formal watch, this Nivrel is devoid of a date window, and any lume on the hands that would make it appear more sporty. Notice the grooved crown on the watch that adds character and functions to assist with operating the crown.

Inside is a very capable ETA automatic 2824-2 movement, that has been used since the 1970s because of its immense reliability. I own several watches that contain this movement and am very happy. In this form, the movement is likely in a mid-grade state (the same movement often has various grades of quality and decoration given the watch it is meant to be in). The ETA 2824-2, while not in this watch, can easily be tuned for use in a Chronometer watch.

The reason this Grand Guilloche is a good gateway to watch appreciation has to do with the many traditional elements that this watch has; a mechanical movement, guilloche decorated face, high grade steel case, and heritage from a well established European watch maker. This is worlds different from a trend fashion watch, or mainstream department store watch. You'll begin to realize little details you didn't notice before when owning a watch like this, such as how much you appreciate a textured dial. Soon, you'll notice how more expensive watches apply these same features and more, and have a reference for being able to appreciate what can cost many thousands of dollars. So for the person interested in watches, or wanting to instill this appreciation in someone close to them, or a young adult, this Nivrel Grand Complication (or similar watch) is an excellent choice.

Simple Surfer: The Nixon Lodown Is An Ideal Tide Watch And Surfer’s Companion

If you surf, you know that having an idea of what the tides are like is important. Tidal ebbs and wanes guide the size and position of the waves, and you don't want to waste your time wading in the sea. Tides variation occurs each day and is totally seasonal. In short, it is almost impossible to simply "predict" the tides. For that reason, it is a good idea to have some type of tide chart or indicator.

Well tidal watches have been around for a while, but the Lodown from Nixon is a particularly good one. It had 15 years of tidal information pre-programmed for 200 cities. The watches also have a full calendar, dual times, alarm stopwatch, countdown timer, and of course light. The best part is that all of these features, literally are accessible at "a glance." The sizable LCD screen features a daily tide chart where you are. You can easily tell what the day's tides are going to be like, and what the best time to hit the waves are. For novice surfers, that is usually at low tide, unless they are a particularly strong swimmer.

The Lodown watches come in a ton of different colors, and some different materials. There are also men's and women's sizes available. There are all polyurethane (plastic) models in a many colors, as well as a titanium model, and limited edition gold treated steel model. Each is very inexpensive at under, or just over $100. What makes the Lodown watches ideal is that they are rugged little work horse watches. You don't need to work about them getting slashed and thrashed in the water, they fit on your wrist or over a wetsuit, and they offer all the information you need at a glance. No tedious button pushing for the tide information. If you are a surfer, or just like exploring tide pools, the Nixon Lodown is an excellent choice. Oh, and I am sure they have a color that is right for you.
