Roger Dubuis EasyDiver Blackswan Watch

As a supplement to the new for 2010 EasyDiver collection (that I wrote about here), Roger Dubuis has released a limited edition EasyDiver Black Swan watch you see before you. These are all revisions of years of EasyDiver watches and/or other sport models from Roger Dubuis - most have been good, all have been interesting.

The Black Swan, as it is called, is named as such for use of a black ceramic bezel. While ceramic bezels are no longer particularly uncommon, this one is interesting given how complex the shape is. It is still not nearly as easy to cut ceramic as it is metal. For instance, how many square ceramic cases have you seen? While I don't know the particular ins and outs of how the bezel was made, I would guess it is significantly more complex than just a ring-shaped ceramic bezel. The complexity comes in with the notches and the numerals done in relief.

Compared to the watches from 2010 the Black Swan certain has more of a night look. I would go so far as to say "black swan" look. Is that like black sheep? Black Swan makes me think of something dark and elegant - which I guess in a sense this watch is. Mostly I think back to other names that Roger Dubuis added to its dive watches that are equally silly such as "SAW" (sport activity watch), and Seamore.

Aside from the black ceramic bezel the case is in steel and 46mm wide. There are carbon fiber inserts on the sides of the case (which you can see if you like to the previous article above). Quality and comfort are high for this range. The Black Swan comes in three dial choices. All that changes on each are the hands and hour indicators. What do you prefer, black, white, or orange lume?

Other than the bezel and minor dial changes the EasyDiver Black Swan is the same watch as the 2010 new model as far as I can tell. Inside the watch is a Roger Dubuis in-house made caliber RD821 automatic movement. The watches are water resistant to 300 meters and come on nice rubber straps. Unfortunately the price is pretty high, even though there will only be 88 Black Swan watches made. Up from about $13,000 for the 2010 Roger Dubuis EasyDiver models, the Black Swan will retail for around $20,000 (13,900 Euros).

Roger Dubuis Excalibur Flying Tourbillon Monopusher Chronograph Watch & The Return Of Roger

Roger Dubuis (the brand) has had a very interesting history over the last 15 years or so - and none of what I am referring to has anything to do with their watches. The man Roger Dubuis started it 1995. He was later ousted from his own brand by a guy who I heard sort of force him to sell it. Then the brand underwent a massive lawsuit in the US (which they lost). Then Richemont bought it and decided they would try to bring back Roger Dubuis into the light. Then George Kern was appointed the CEO by the Richemont board to try and make something good of the brand as well as strengthen the movement manufacturing, and now Roger Dubuis himself has been rehired by the brand he started himself a while ago that was going on for so long with his name and not his blessing. Interesting right? Well I think so. Welcome back Roger.

Roger Dubuis won't have a specific title as I understand it. He will work with the new Head of Movement Development, helping with ideas, design, execution, and inspiration. According to the brand, Mr. Dubuis will be a "natural ambassador. Sure, OK. It couldn't have come at a more important time for Roger Dubuis as well (the brand).

The Geneva Seal turns 125 this year and for its birthday the "image of quality" gets more homework as a gift. What? Well sort of. The Seal of Geneva is a marker on (usually the movement) watches that have met certain origin and quality standards. For years people complained that the standards were a bit hokey and didn't make sense. The hardest part to get of Seal of Geneva on your watch was actually producing your watch in the canton of Geneva. There was so much controversy around it that brands like Patek Philippe decided to make their own seal. For after 125 years the Geneva Seal standards have been updated and made more strict. I should mention that Roger Dubuis is a brand that for a long time has boasted a lot of Geneva Seals on their watches.

What are the new Geneva Seal standards? I am actually not totally familiar with all the changes but the new criteria is more strict and seeks to certify wearing quality. In short the certification is about watch origin, quality, decoration, and construction. If you are a really hardcore watch guy you can read a full detailing of what a watch needs to be to get the seal applied here. Note that the new standards further call for better made and more accurate watches tested in normal wearing conditions in the case itself.

The 125th anniversary Geneva Seal itself is also a bit different - likely to show people that movements with the updated seal fulfill the new requirements. Roger Dubuis has already released news of their first watch to satisfy the requirements of the 125th anniversary Geneva Seal. Dubuis himself is a very good watch maker and will likely help push the unique mechanical capabilities of the brand's manufacture movements forward in the coming years.

The new seal-satisfying watch is the Excalibur Flying Tourbillon Monopusher Chronograph, and it is very beautiful as well as limited. Inside of the 45mm wide 18k pink gold watch is a Roger Dubuis produced MR580 automatic movement.. The movement boasts a flying tourbillon, monopusher chronograph, power reserve indicator, and cool dial-visible micro-rotor. All that and it retains a nice symmetrical look.

Roger Dubuis will only produce eight of these limited edition Flying Tourbillon Monpusher Chronograph watches. I have a feeling that pieces such as this and others like it moving forward will heavily rely on guidance from Mr. Dubuis. Overall a nice (and expensive) piece and I look forward to seeing how Roger Dubuis will help Roger Dubuis.

Roger Dubuis EasyDiver Watches For 2010

It took Roger Dubuis months to get a proper press release out on this watch with specs. I took images of the new Easy Diver watches back in January 2010, and am only now able to share them with you. I wanted some hard details to go along with the images. Prices will start at $12,900 for the subsidiary second model versions. Here are two different models. The sub seconds version and the chronograph. While the EasyDiver Chronograph is a sexy number, I think the real momentum is with the time only model.

Roger Dubuis gave the watch a moronic name. I love the "EasyDiver" part (a la Easy Rider). I kid you not, they actually named it the "EasyDiver Hours, Minutes, and Small Seconds." And people wonder why I make fun of the watch industry. "Check out my cool new car...the Wheels, Engine, and Steering Wheel." Aside from a name you don't want to utter yourself, the entry level EasyDiver is a great timepiece. The cool character is accompanied by a beautiful in-house made automatic movement (more on that in a second), and is also a limited edition. Should totally be part of the brands permanent collection though, in my opinion. Actually all the new EasyDiver watches for 2010 are limited editions... wonder why that is.

The EasyDiver Sub Seconds (as I am going to call it) is in the collections iconic looking 46mm wide steel case (water resistant to 300 meters). Finally Roger Dubuis has taken their cool looking diver's bezel and given it the cut notches that it deserves. Prior to this they just applied black paint over sections of the bezel to make it look like it might be cut. Look at the image of the EasyDiver Chronograph to see what I am talking about.

Carbon fiber is still used on the watch, but only a bit. For a while the watches were going a bit carbon fiber crazy. Now, there are only a few little pieces tastefully tucked into the sides of the lugs. Something cool to notice when looking at the watch from an angle or the side, but isn't in your face all the time (the way most carbon fiber treatments on watches should be). The watch has two dial options. A black dial, and one in silver tone with orange hour indicators and hands. I actually prefer the latter. The orange isn't at all over powering and looks really sexy against the silvery, textured dial. Texture is a modified sunburst pattern with a clean looking center. The deep set face is part of the rugged look of the entire watch, and there is a meaningful sloped chapter ring that has useful hour indicators on it. You could argue that the hands might benefit from being a bit larger, but they are fine as they are. Branding is kept to a minimum on the dial, and the large '"12" at noon/midnight reminds you that this is a sport watch. It is also balanced out by the subsidiary seconds dial.

Inside the EasyDiver Sub Seconds is a Roger Dubuis manufactured RD821 automatic movement. Click on the preceding link for a cool presentation on the watch at Roger Dubuis' website. Not only is the movement in-house made and nice decorated, but it also bears the prestigious Seal of Geneva, and is COSC Chronometer certified. The watch is paired with a rubber strap and has aÂ really cool looking deployment clasp is all Roger Dubuis in character. Note that the long case of the watch is best suited to be worn on larger wrists. This is a pretty neat looking fashion diver for those who like something different and is still horologically well respected. The EasyDiver Sub Seconds models are limited to 888 pieces each.

Then you have the EasyDiver Chronograph version with feels more like older EasyDiver watches, but is still really interesting and fun to wear. Black, orange, and steel tone are all given justice as they play together with a watch that is about as bold in design as you could comfortably wear on a regular basis. The steel case is also 46mm wide, 300m water resistant, and in steel. One thing I really love about the watch is inside of it. The Roger Dubuis made Caliber RD 78 automatic chronograph movement is a real good looker. Once again, you can click that link for details about it at Roger Dubuis' website. The movement reminds me of older chronograph movements where a lot of the gears aren't hidden behind plates or bridges. Yet, the movement is still an automatic. This is due to it having a micro-rotor for the automatic winding (placed under a neat looking skeletonized bridge that is shaped like a Celtic cross). The chronograph features a column wheel adjuster inside the movements, as well as also having the Seal of Geneva. I love how instead of having a series of blued screws, they have just one large blued steel screw as a testament to the aesthetic.

On the dial you have a bi-compax subsidiary dial display, again with the sunburst pattern, and a fun mix of the six o'clock hour indicator spelled out balanced by the numeric "12" above. One thing you can't really notice is the colors of the chronograph pushers. The crown and lower chronograph have black rings on them, while the upper chronograph pusher has an orange ring to match the orange section of the rotating diver's bezel. Roger Dubuis watches celebrate the fact that they are not for everyone - not even close. The designs are intentionally made to arouse some, while seeing strange to others. Nevertheless, most of the brand's timepieces are still very well designed, and have a lot of enjoyment in store for people who like them. The EasyDiver Chronograph is no different, and is itself limited to just 280 pieces.

Roger Dubuis 43mm Golden Square Watch – Available On James List

Looking at the past a bit I want to bring your attention to the Roger Dubuis Golden Square. Not the contemporary model, but the one from a few years ago. In a 43mm wide square case, the watch screamed luxury in a way few other watches have. Bold and loud, the watch still in good taste. People that wear one suddenly feel a bit more important, but you aren't sure why. In fact, I believe the watch may still be in production, even though there are newer Golden Square watches available.Â While the Golden Square came with Roman or Arabic numerals, I think the Roman numeral version is the king when it comes to appearances. The Arabic numeral version is arguably easier to read, but doesn't have as impressive a face.

In some respects the watch looks like a (more) metrosexual Cartier. The blued steel hands (gold in at least some of the pieces0 are larger than you might expect and stylized just a bit less than Louis the XIV's wardrobe. The dial is rich with artistic merit, and could never be referred to as busy or too complex. Though it is a "full dial." There is a central ring to help with telling the time. The tapered Roman numerals look sharp, and sexy. Blown up more than Cartier's versions.Adding to the legibility and poise of the watch is a sapphire crystal that has been coated with AR on both sides.

An interesting touch on most Roger Dubuis Gold Square models was the perforated lizard strap. It felt like a compliment to kinky driving gloves. They fit nicely on demure lugs with exposed screws on the sides. The Golden Square case is actually quiet curved to fit over one's wrist nicely. The rear of the watch has a sapphire crystal display back in the center to see the movement. This is good because Roger Dubuis is known to give watches very nicely decorated movements, the one in the Golden Square is an automatic of course. If the 43mm wide case size is too large for you, less "bold" sizes are available. There is a 40mm wide version, 37mm wide version,Â as well as a much smaller 34mm wide version.

Dial choices on these Golden Square models were plentiful. From light to dark tones, dials could even have mother-of-pearl, diamonds, or engraved centers. On each face though, the sharp angles of the hour numerals and the large hands stand out the most. Just the time not enough for you? Roger Dubuis did, and continues to release Golden Square watches with a variety of complications. There are calendars, chronographs, and a unique dual timezone model that is styled like a regulator. For older models, I recommend the basic three hand models as some of Roger Dubuis's older movements with additional complications sometimes had issues. If you are getting a new Roger Dubuis watch, this isn't an issue anymore after Richemont Group too them over and improved their movement production arm.

The watch wouldn't be called the "Golden Square" if it wasn't actually a golden square. The versions I have come across have cases either in 18k rose, yellow, or white gold.Â Prices for these watches retailed to levels above $40,000. On James List there is a version in rose gold with a diamond decorated inner dial for just under $25,000.

Roger Dubuis Kingsqaure Column Wheel Chronograph Watch & Friends

Some of you will like this watch, some of you won't like this watch at all, and still some of you want this watch so badly you can taste it. Welcome to one of the most polarizing types of designs out there, and it is over a year old already. Personally I am very intrigued by the design, probably since I got to check out this and other Kingsquare watches recently. It is a loud and in your face look, but refined nevertheless - like something Versace watches should be. The King Square line of watches from Roger Dubuis is defined by its square faceted case that angles down on the top and bottom. This means that the sapphire crystal is also faceted. The dial design is like "art deco lightning."Â Yea, it does make the watch harder to read, but that is just one of its charming quirks. While this article in on the above watch, I figured it would be a good time to show you some images I took of other Kingsquare watch I saw at SIHH last month. Consider these cousin Kingsquare watches.

The 30 minute chronograph almost looks to be there just for presentation, given how closely you need to check it out to read it. Of course it is useful, but the square subdials add an interesting and welcome complexity to the design. The Roman numerals looks pretty awesome if I may say, and they give gold a good name in a look like this. You can tell that Roger Dubuis wants you to think that this is a sport watch given the rubber coating on the crown and pushers. Quality is up to given ownership by Richemont of Roger Dubuis. Note that the watches in the images taken by me have protective plastic around them.

The case is 40mm wide, which is a good size for a square watch - actually that makes it large. I can't tell whether I like the black rubber plate put over the lugs to hide the gap where the strap connects to the case. It is either a genius move, or looks cheap - hard to say. Really depends on how you look at it. It is dark enough not to stand out though. The case is in 18k pink gold. The dial is "flame orange" and uses orange garnet stones as the outer hour markers. Inside the watch is a highly decorated automatic movement with a micro rotor, that helps you view and appreciate the movement. Further, the chronograph complication uses a column wheel, which adds to the value. With the crocodile or rubber strap and titanium screws, I am pretty sure that this is in fact a sport watch, just with lots of Roger Dubuis upmarket "in your face" character. Note the matching orange stitching on the strap as well. Just a stunning piece in my opinion that will compliment an out-loud personality (like mine).Â Not sure about price, but in the over $30,000 range more than likely. Certainly a lot cheaper than the newer version of this Kingsquare orange beast that has many more stones and a tourbillon.

Roger Dubuis Easy Diver SED Tourbillon Limited Edition Watch Hands-On

Last March I was very intrigued by the marketing images of this new Roger Dubuis Easy Diver SED Tourbillon watch with its intense level of skeletonization, in carbon fiber, that looked like tree branches. If you look closely, you can tell that the movement is barley even there. The biggest parts are the one minute flying tourbillon and the mainspring. Surprisingly, the manually wound Roger Dubuis caliber RD 02 SQ3 movement has a 60 hour power reserve (movement bears the Seal of Geneva). One thing that I want to make clear is that the "branches" of the movement are done in carbon fiber - which now makes it clear what you are looking at. I've never seen anything like this before. Like other models in the Easy Diver line, the watch has other carbon fiber sections built in, such as here seen on the sides of the lugs.

The Easy Diver SED Tourbillon is really large and really light. The 48mm wide case is in all titanium an feels light as a feather. Give then fact that the movement is barley there, this fact makes a lot of sense. In addition to the rubber strap with a titanium deployment, there is some rubber sandwiched into the construction of the case. Everything about the watch is very sporty, but also luxurious. Look closely at the slanted chapter ring around the dial - you'll notice that the hour markers are rubies. Very cool in my opinion. There is a sly nature to Rober Dubuis watches that present luxury in an unapologetically pronounced manner, without the pretention that you might expect from a luxury watch company.

A lot of the design ethic of Roger Dubuis watches reminds me of Versace. Both literally and figuratively. See for example the pattern on the sides of the rubber strap and you know what I mean. Roger Dubuis is also humorous with their watches. There is something fun and at the same time sully about the watch. You need to relax and take the piece not so seriously, even though it does have a lot to be impressed with. It is important to appreciate the watch on various levels, technically, horologically, and artistically. You get a hint of this sentiment by the name that Roger Dubuis places on the rear of the watch, "Tourbidiver." The very notion of a tourbillon in a diver's watch is silly, so you need to appreciate it for the humor in the concept. Plus, the watch is a true diver's watch with a rotating diver's bezel, as well as 300 meters of water resistance.

This limited edition Roger Dubuis Easy Diver SED Tourbillon watch has less than 300 pieces out there. Retail price for the watch is about $125,000 - but retailers are making deals! I got to check out this cool Roger Dubuis as one of their authorized dealers here in CA, at Lussori in Carmel-By-The-Sea. A good example of a wild luxury watch from an interesting luxury watch brand.

Six Professionals That Tend To Be Watch Lovers

Enjoying watches is typically not a solo activity. Watch lovers like myself feel the need constantly discuss or mentions watches, much to the dismay of non-watch lovers. But when you meet a fellow horological enthusiast, the conversation quickly becomes lively as shared interests intermingle. In my time I have realized that certain types of people tend to like watches more than others. This is by no means an exhaustive list, but represents six professions that tend to attract a watch loving bunch. Though it could also easily be suggested that entrance into the profession itself engenders a new appreciation that all the while lay dormant.

Lawyers

Myself being in this group I felt it prudent to mention first. Lawyers comes in all varieties but one thing all lawyers (should) have in common is a distinct attention to detail. We also value items of inherent value, and reliability. Accuracy is another characteristic that lawyers value, and coincidentally enough, these are the same values that many watch makers attempt to imbue their watches with (at least from a marketing standpoint). There is also the showmanship of being an attorney, and regardless of an attorney's area of practice, it is important for them to make a stand. For this reason an attorney needs a high quality timepiece that communicates purpose and strength when seen by observers. Good brands for the successful attorney are Rolex, Roger Dubuis, Piaget, Sinn, Breguet, A. LangeÂ Sohne, Franck Muller and many others.

I can easily say that many attorney's I have met either have a nice watch, are interested in watch making, or are plain watch fanatics. Lawyers tend to covet well know brands, but that does not encompass every watch a lawyer may like. There are even those lawyers who prefer very low end watches, especially when meeting with client or speaking to a jury in order to allow them to better blend in and appeal to the lay person. Overall you'll be hard pressed to find a lawyer that doesn't wear a watch, or have idle interest in the one(s) they have.

Banking & Finance Professionals

Whether you deal with lots of money or the buying and selling of investments, you need to have a grasp on minutiae and the big picture. With watches it is the same way. Each tiny element of a good watch must be built with perfection, and the overall result must be appealing and functional. Of great importance to all people who deal with money is signifying success and the ability to earn wealth. For these reasons an individual in finance needs to communicate qualities about themselves through items such as watches. Further, investors and alike tend to be collectors as well, and enjoy the acquisition of rare and interesting timepieces. You will thus find that many such people have nice and elaborate watches handpicked from their travels, or recommended to them by colleagues. You'll find high level finance people and bankers with a Rolex (see pre-owned Rolex watches), Frank Muller, Chopard, Panerai, Girard Perregaux, Mont Blanc, and other high quality watches with known names.

IT Professionals

The more senior level you go in the IT world, the most you'll find watch lovers. Especially those who have been doing it long enough. There seems to be a connection between programming well and well performing watches. IT professionals and software developers are a bit more classic in their tastes, although you'll find the occasion person in this field who enjoys the truly avant garde watches out there. For those who like sitting at a computer for much of the day work on the latest technology, it might seem a small contradiction that they like little machines on their wrists that tell time when a mere glance at the screen will suffice. Regardless, even though programmers often remove their watches during long typing sessions they enjoy the distinct utilitarian elements of "tool" watches. Focusing on function rather than looks. IT pros tend to like classic well built utility watches, and the best ones coming out today. Typically preferred watches include Tag Heuer, Omega, Breitling, Fortis, Sinn, Ball, IWC, and others that conjure up the idea of flawless function and reliability.

Photographers

While not the largest segment, many photographers are ideal watch lovers. Equally obsessed with both aesthetics and technology, a photographer must have an eye for looks and the ability to work with accurate, yet delicate equipment. With all this case for camera equipment, a photographer wants to know that their watch will never be something they have to worry about, and is very legible. Being used to spend a lot on high quality cameras and lenses, most photographers understand that when it comes to machines, you often get what you pay for. The idea photographer watch is supremely reliable and legible in all conditions. Like IT people, photographer tend to focus on utility over style, but the difference is that photographers will actually rely on it more. Most photographer watches are no nonsense in looks with features that help with their everyday photographing needs. These functions tend to be a power reserve, chronograph, and large legible face. Among all their equipment, photographers know their watch will likely stay with them the longest or at the least, won't grow obsolete.

Chefs

You might not initially take chefs for watch lovers, but you'd be under estimating a class of people who spend a great deal of time working with reliable tools and having a keen sense of taste. In the fast paced kitchen environment timing is everything, and you need a good watch to help. Further still, chefs enjoy a sense of stateliness and pomp, so just as plating is important, so is the presentation time on their wrists. A good chefs watch almost always have a chronograph or at least rotating bezel for measuring the time. A rattrapante (double stopwatch) can also be useful. Like other hands on professionals, chefs need reliable and accurate watches that look good when needed. Also, because every good chef elevates themselves by standing apart, you will often seen less known or avant garde brands on a chef's wrist.

Pilots

Of course pilots need a good watch. Most modern watches have at least a few elements on them that stemmed from a feature initially designed for a pilot or airplane. Many of these features involved legibility, accuracy, and long power reserves. Some pilot watches offer very complex features such as the slide rule on Breitling and other watches. Most pilots rely on instruments in their planes, so much of these features don't get used. Regardless, it is nice to have a second timezone, or ability to switch between timezones easily. Out of all these professionals, pilots really need legible watches the most. Whether they are in low light or fast fast scenarios, a quick glance should be enough to register the time. With constant reliance on planes, pilots need to pick a machine that they can trust with their lives. A watch with faulty mechanicals or which is unreliable simply won't pass muster. Because of that, any watch they enjoys popularity among pilots must have done something right. Brands you'll often see in the sky are Breitling, Rolex, Glycine, Sinn, IWC, Citizen, and again, many others.

When mentioning the watches that these professionals use I was only able to mention a handful of brands. Lucky for us there are literally 100s of watch brands out there, from the mass produced to the high limited, and the very affordable, to the ultra decadent. If you are placed within one of these professions, consider you own love for watches, and feel free to inquire with the next professional you encounter as to the watches they prefer and always keep checking out wrists.

Easy Looking At The Easy Diver, Dive Watch Series By Roger Dubuis

On a few instances I have dedicated discussion to the world of luxury diving watches. To some, it seems a contradiction, why imbue a tool meant to be exposed to harsh elements with a luxury facade? To others, it seems like the perfect combination of things they love. I fall into this latter category. The seminal luxury diving watch was the Rolex Submariner. Since them, many have come in to market and have succeeded Rolex at it's own game in many areas.

Today the object of my affection are the mostly beautiful watches in the Roger Dubuis Easy Diver line. The name is probably taken from "Easy Rider," and evokes a spirit of confident yet calm entrance into the elements. The watch doesn't "prepare" for diving, it simply does without notice while minding itself and focusing on other matters such as remaining shiny and full of class.

The shape of the Easy Diver case is very unique in my opinion. The flared edges near the lugs present a visual attraction that is difficult to explain. Seeing it brings recollection of antique emblems, shields, or heralds. A signal of affiliation on your wrist. Affiliation to what I am not sure, but regardless the effect is nice on the eyes. Other elements of the watch are far more modern in comparison. The large screws in the lugs that secure the strap, the carbon fiber accents and dial in certain models, and the oversize crown are all contemporary touches in an otherwise classic looking dive watch.

The bezel is a distinct point of interest, almost cartoon looking in its boldness. It is a bit over the top, but the whole point is instill the sense of ruggedness, which also applies to the large crown and retaining bar in the middle on the strap connection between the lugs.

From complex tourbillons, to unorthodox square models. the easy diver line always delights me with the smooth lines of its face, and some of the boldest watch hands I have ever seen on a dial. These hands are like sharp blades cutting through time. Very powerful looking in an almost aristocratic manner. I love looking at these watch hands, though I am less impressed by the hands on the chronograph model.

Most of the models are automatics, but the tourbillon and chronograph models are manually wound. All models that I have seen have a see through caseback to the nicely decorated movements. The strap deployments are branded nicely with an "RG" and "Easy Diver" in nice relief on the clasp.

My favorite model is the k10, as it is the most traditional diver of all the models I have seen, though it does not have a seconds hand. The red number indexes are charming, and nicely compliments the red trim on the case underneath the bezel. One thing I just don't get is the odd large branding of "k10" and "Sports Activity Watch." Why is this at all necessary? "Sports Activity Watch" is about the cheesiest thing a luxury watch company could place on the face of a watch that is easily $8,000. All the watches are pricey, but you get a great watch and luxury toy to tote around. Overall my appreciation for these watches is high as a high-end watch that can be worn everyday for those who can afford it. Until then, I will appreciate them from afar.
