I have no idea what manner of space robot warrior fighter is supposed to wear a watch like this. Now as a limited edition model with two camouflage dial options, the RSW Diving Tool watch gets even more distinct. I originally wrote about the RSW Diving Tool watch here when it first came out.

A bit larger than the Bell & Ross BR01, this piece takes the military square style watch a few steps further and offers something that would seem pretty suitable as a prop in Avatar. The steel case is 46.2mm wide (16.45mm thick) and offered in a brushed finish or in PVD black. The dial background colors include camo "woodland" and camo "oceanic" in the newer pixelated camouflage style. It makes for a fun and cartoony look, especially for those who want to look at their watches and smirk.

As a diving watch the piece has a nice looking dial with very legible hands. I love that massive minute hand and the hour markers, those are clever in their design in my opinion. The case has a rotating bezel and is water resistant to 300 meters with a sapphire crystal. It might also act as a diving weight! No, not really. You might be asking yourself, "why does a diving watch need camouflage?" Well, it doesn't. Not in the least, but it is sorta cool. And if you are diving with a camo watch then you  know that maybe, just maybe, it will be useful on one of your weekend warrior missions in the brush.

Inside the RSW Diving Tool Camo watches is a Swiss ETA 2824-2 automatic movement. Pretty standard, but fine. I think that the price of these watches is actually quite fair, and if you recall these Camo versions of the Diving Tool watches are limited edition pieces. According to RSW there will be 49 pieces for each dial - I don't know if that means 49 total, or 49 for the PVD versions, and PVD for the naked steel versions. The limited edition number of the collection is right on the dial. Note how the watch render below is a mistake because they use the Camo three-hand dial on an RSW Diving Tool Chronograph watch case.

RSW will offer the Diving Tool Camo watches (reference family # 7130) in a Pelican-style case with a rubber strap, NATO-style strap, and a matching camo Swiss pocket knife. Just don't drop the pocket knife in the wrong terrain or you may never find it again. Prices are pretty reasonable at 2,245 Swiss Francs for the steel Camo versions and 2,345 Swiss Francs for the PVD black steel Camo versions.

I love how a design like that of the RSW (Rama Swiss Watch) Nazca is bound to be so polarizing. I think that RSW themselves gets a kick out of that. I mean, from a purely business-oriented motive you'd want to make timepieces that appealed to more people, not less people right? Yet despite this RSW continues to tread forth in the design of timepieces that appeal to just some people, but certainly not all people. So what about you? What are you feelings on the Nazca collection?

The courage (or "audacity" as Europeans in their infinite defiance of how Americans use words call it) that RSW has actually does impress me. They are among a minority of watch brands that actually do take design risks (even though all claim to). And does this risky behavior pay off for RSW? I am not sure. Unfortunately not many of their timepieces make it to the US. But that goes for a lot of really good watches out there.

For me the design gambling at RSW pays off because I always give their new watches very close attention. The RSW Nazca being no exception. Past pieces of theirs that I have enjoyed include the Outland, Outland 3H, and Diving Tool. I mean, what they are going is real watch maker art. What do I mean by this? Well making a crazy looking watch doesn't take a lot of skill. Hell, a 4 year old can do it. What does take skill is designing something really unique - that still takes into account agreed upon rules of aesthetic balance and timing instrument legibility. For the most part, I think you'll agree that no matter how weird RSW watches get, these still take these matters in to serious concern. Which is certainly not something that can be said for all watch makers. As I noted in the past, word from RSW directly to me was that they employ their own designers that do all their work. This is in contrast to some other brands that for the most part outsource (to design firms) the creation of new timepiece designs. But I digress...

OK, so this here is the RSW Nazca Sport. Specifically, two limited edition versions. The steel cases are (I believe) 49mm wide and have a totally unique design to them - very angular and geometric, but interesting. The dial itself is still round, but the chronograph subdials thematically match the design of the case and bezel. Inside the watches are what I believe to be Swiss Valjoux 7750 automatic movement that have been modified to have the subsidiary seconds dial removed for a more balanced look on the dial.

One version of the limited edition Nazca sport is a bit more "formal." This model in all steel has a metal bracelet and textured silver tone dial. Lume on the applied hour markers and hands should help with legibility. Plus, the many facets of the case design should contrast interestingly with the more or less uniform coloration of the entire watch.

Another version is available in a PVD black case. This more colorful model has red and silver tone on the dial, along with a contrast stitched black leather strap. Clearly the more sporty of these "Sport" watches, the red and black model is more visually avant garde. Though I would argue that the all steel tone model is more "brave" because at first glance it is a conservative steel watch, until you look closely and the design. Each of these two watches will be limited to 99 pieces. RSW tends to be rather fair with price, so I can't see these Nazca Sport timepieces with asking prices above $3,000 - $4,000. Whether or not I am a potential Nazca Sport watch wearer is yet to be seen. But at the same time I hunger for designs like this as more and more mainstream brands are getting highly conservative with their designs - and you shouldn't have to spend $100,000 plus on a really unique, but well conceived watch.

RSW is a brand I very much like. What makes me like it more is that most people  (even hardcore watch lovers) in the US have never heard of it. It isn't that RSW isn't distributed in the US, just that it isn't distributed that much. RSW stands for "Rama Swiss Watch." I have discussed them before, just not very recently. One of the things that makes the brand different is that they have an in-house designer. This isn't actually all that common, as many many brands have in-house brand directional people. but design is largely outsourced to specialized watch designer firms. But I digress. Many RSW watches (for both men and women) are cool and quirky. I can't claim to love them all, but I love their modern designer twist. I got really excited about the Outland 3H watch that is new for this year. I first wrote about it here on Luxist.

While at Basel I got to meet with RSW and check out the watches first-hand. You should know that the collection started life as the RSW Outland from a couple of years ago. You can see how the watches share the same case and strap. The Outland was a bit of a wild timepiece that was interesting all over and demanded attention. What it didn't demand was too much of the avant garde market share. People liked the case more than the dial (which was interesting but certainly demanded an acquired taste). They also may have not been thrilled with the price. So while the Outland wasn't a failure per se, it was more of a niche item. RSW had something special with the Outland case and wanted to have a more mainstream product. The disc based time-telling system has merged into a simple three-hand dial (why the watch is called the "3H" - for three hands), and it is being offered with a big variety of colors. I actually think there are too many color options to start. You can easily like so many of them that you won't known which to buy if you like the watch - this often leads to people not buying anything. A condition known a "choice paralysis." What RSW should do (and I told them), is release just a few colors at a time. Each 6 months to a year release some new colors to keep things fresh and lure potential buyers who have been hovering around the idea to buy. Again, I digress. RSW is really making my thoughts wander.

It would be wrong for me to suggest that the Outland 3H is the watch for everyone. "Drop everything, go out, and buy this new sensation!" Not a sentiment that applies here. Why? Because being a "different" type of watch RSW intends for a timepiece like this to appeal strongly to a few, and be quizzically starred at by the rest. Personally, I dig the watch a lot. It is a thoroughly modern looking timepiece with Swiss mechanical innards. A watch for the "why do we need a watch generation." The case looks and feels like a gadget. A mechanical watch with the spirit of a digital clock. It is just the type of item that can help introduce a "watch oblivious" generation to the wonderful world of timepieces. I suspect that the tech friendly generation would be very open to a watch like the RSW Outland 3H watch if it was introduced to them properly.

None of that is to say that the watch has nothing for seasoned watch lovers. Anything but. This is no cheap trendy timepiece. RSW is a good watch maker and the Outland 3H represents that. The finish and quality of the watch are quite good, and the piece is as ergonomic as it is "fresh." Let's start by looking at the case. Large and square with bent ends that serve as lugs. The case is 44mm wide in steel with black PVD, and various version with either sand-blasted steel or rose gold mixed with the black. The lug sections each have a row of three large hex bolts that look strong and masculine. They are matched by three more under the watch. There are other screws all over the case, though not so many as to look cluttered. The industrial design of the watch is cosmetic, but feels rugged. It also helps gives the piece a very modern and aggressive look. The design idea seems to be that "watches in the future are more functional than decorative."

I tend to prefer the version that have black mixed with steel. These help bring out the design of the case best. This also works for the gold versions. On the rear of the watch is a vertical slit that is RSW's version of a sapphire exhibition caseback window - where you can see the Swiss ETA automatic 2824-2 movement inside the watch. You might be asking yourself "what is up with that crown?" RSW likes to use their proprietary fold out winch style crown. The mechanism literally fold out for winding, and then can be pulled out for adjusting the watch. It would be a bit of a pain with a manually wound watch, but it is really fun to have. My apologies for not thinking to take a picture of the folded out crown.

Like I said, you will recognize the design elements including the Arabic numeral "12" and hour marker styles from digital clocks. Without being a cheesy homage to he 1980's, RSW was able to incorporate a vintage style looking dial on a modern watch, and do it well. The large hands are very easy to read, and taken from another RSW piece known simply as the Diving Tool Watch. The dial is also enhanced by SuperLumiNova luminant. In addition to a few case style choices, there are a number of dial choices. Black with a variety of hand and numeral colors (such as green, yellow, red, white), and with a white dial or silvered dial. RSW is pretty much just having a fun time offering a number of colorful options. Who knows what will sell the best, they all look pretty neat depending on your taste.

Price for these watches is likely a couple thousand dollars. Not too much more than that I am sure. For that price they are indeed a splurge for most of the people in my mind that will like them here in the US, but not something that is so expensive you just scoff and shake your head. Any understanding of the Swiss watch market will rather easily justify these prices. While the RSW Outland 3H isn't a watch revolution, it is a fresh look, with a mind for a market that largely ignores watches but shouldn't. How to capture 'generation .com' isn't clear, but doing so with cheeky watches that look like what your uncle wore back in 1979 isn't necessarily the best way of going about it. At the same time, the Outland 3H is nifty watch novelty that should speak nicely to enough people. Look for it soon.

How cool is this new Diving Tool watch from Rama Swiss Watch (RSW)? The wildly functional yet avant garde "instrument" watch seems totally plausible to wear, yet nothing else like it exists. The case is mostly square, with an functional, but cool, looking round rotating bezel over the dial. I like to totally horizontal orientation of the crowns and pushers as well - nice design cue. The first few seconds of looking at the watch you'll be a bit distracted by the novel look. Then you'll appreciate just how usable the watch is. Really nothing that crazy about the design in terms of utility.

From a diver's perspective the watch has everything in the right place. 300 meters of water resistance plus the rotating bezel and bright lume covered dial make for an good underwater tool. The large dot hour markers have been cleverly enhanced with a vertical stripe that I feel actually makes the watch easier to read. It also makes the hour markers look like screws. The hands of the watch are very purposeful in their form. I'd say that they might look to be too large for the chronograph subdials, but I don't really think that is the case, as they look easily readable. Actually you aren't going to be using the chronograph underwater really anyways. The watch comes with two finished and three dial colors. There is the steel version and the PVD coated steel. Honestly both look really sweet. Two black faces are offered with either naked lume or orange colored hands and markers, while a metallic blue dial is also offered. I can't pledge preference for either as they are all nice to look at in all honestly.

Inside the watch are two movement options. The 4050 series Diving tool has ETA Valjoux 7753 automatic movements in a tri-compax orientation, and the 7050 series is a three hand watch with an automatic ETA 2824-2 movement inside. Doesn't it sounds like the Reference numbers should be switched? I.e. 7050 series for the chronograph watches? Maybe the press release has a mistake - as that has been known to happen. The size of the watches is large, but not crazy big at 46.20 mm wide and 16.45mm thick. The height of the watch is 53.60mm from lug tip to lug tip. Of course the crystal is sapphire, and the build quality is going to be good. The strap is available in rubber or black or brown alligator - with matching buckles to the case (steel or PVD).

Cost is actually going to be pretty reasonable given the style of the watch. Sure lots of beautiful and lust worthy diving watches come out that cost over $10,000. No specific price has been released yet, but I would image the RSW Diving Tool to cost between $4,000 - $8,000.

Wow. Just check this out - the RSW Moonflower for Women.

Powerful imagery to say the least. I love that this is a brand that is taking definite risks with a design like this - which has earned my respect, and I'm sure the respect of many more.

Rama Swiss Watch, the geniuses behind the Moonflower, has grown out of need for truly unique, avant-garde pieces. Giving the manufacturing expertise of the founders, their success is sure to be guaranteed. Compare this with the fashion-forward designs and distributions, the RSW Moonflower stands alone.

So, let's take the obvious. Moon. Flower. Can you see them both? Together? Not at first... but, like those allusions, this watch offers so much more.

And it's not a traditional look at all - period. For women's watches - this is a whole different game.

It's definitely kind of ugly. The bumpy facade of the titanium dial is a little off-putting at first. It's a stretch for a moon - and a stretch for a flower... But then - you gaze into the open face... And become transfixed by the moving dials - working together - in harmony - to turn at just the right moment.

That is where RSW gets its moon and its flower.

So you want to know what's inside this rock - What's powering this machine... The RSW Moonflower features the Automatic ETA 2824-2 Movement, manufactured by powerhouse ETA, with 28,800 vibrations per hour, or 8 beats a second. ETA has earned a solid reputation for creating high quality movements that require less wrist movement to wind the mainspring.

This should be no problem for the woman wearing this, though, as I doubt she is someone who sits still a lot. A woman who owns an RSW Moonflower goes wherever she wants. And this is one timepiece that is up for a challenge.

For all you moves and shakers, the ETA movement captured within this model, along with most manufactures, uses Incabloc shock resistance for the RSW Moonflower. So Ladies - whatever you call it - this means that the balance is not damaged when the watch is dropped or bumped. Excellent for use in action.

Rocking in at a solid 40mm diameter, the black PVD coated steel case is beyond anything I could have dreamed of for a hott women's watch. RSW offers the dial plates in black, grey, or white, depending on how much of a statement you are willing to make. I have only seen the black on black model, and so far that's enough for me. I'm in love.

Another unique detail on the Moonflower is that the Hours, Minutes, and Seconds indicators have been replaced by traditional hands with 3 separate discs that move in harmony with the movement of the watch.

Inspired by a compass, the outer most disc rotates the hours, and with meticulous care and precision, the minutes are then also displayed. Mimicking the 4 points of a compass, the seconds disc rotates with a grid of four lines, suggesting the seconds as they pass. The pink gold "monitor" in the center of the dial opening is positioned to read the exact time, from hour - to minute - second. Such synchronization is hard to replicate, as you must well know.

And watching it all in motion is practically spiritual to watch. If only every thing worked so smooth.

Against the dark black austere of the case, the pink gold numerals are striking. A great shade of pink, too. And it's done well. Too often pink, or rose gold, comes up with an orange sheen. Against the harsh black of the titanium case, these numerals seriously pop.

One area that RSW loses me, though, is the rubber strap... I bet it's more functional that way, and goes along with the durable appeal, but I wish there was a solid black titanium bracelet, furthering the jewelry image. That way, from all sides, this would be a strong, masculine, meteor on the wrist. As is, it's still hott, but could have been that much hotter.

I am excited to see what else comes from this brand as they are positioning themselves very well, in my opinion. Too often brands get caught up in trends and competing with each other that the very art of innovation gets lost. I hope that RSW continues to move forward with blinders on, creating their own real path.

It's unfortunate, then, that their website is not entirely up. Not sure why, but with releases such as this one at Baselworld 2009, they need to update this (http://www.ramawatch.com/index.php) fast!

Well one of their new watches falls in their Nazca line. A watch featuring an interesting facet cut hexagonal case. The new Power Reserve model makes a sporty line, even more sporty by adding number around the bezel, and featuring a more aggressive dial design. RSW puts a lot of emphasis on the attention to detail in the cut and design of the case, which includes very well cut edges ("chiseled") and contrasting polishes. Like most RSW watches, the crown is a special crank system that one twists out and turns (like a crank) to adjust the time). It is an interesting quirk at the least.

Make of the dial design what you will. Love it or hate it, you can appreciate the different textures as well as use of symmetry and asymmetry on the same palette. Interestingly enough, they place the "+" and "-" indicators for the power reserve on the opposite side from the actual power reserve hand. This allows for an unbroken view of the sunburst array stemming from the power reserve hand; an interesting compromise between design and function.

Inside the Nazca G Power Reserve watch is a modified ETA Valjoux 7750 movement that has a power reserve function. It is a good work horse, and has been known to work well with a power reserve modification. The actual power reserve for the movement is 42 hours.The case itself is water resistant to 100 meters. You also get a number of strap options. Black or brown calfskin strap with either orange or red stitching, or a rubber strap option; both with locking steel clasps.

This is a very large watch, with a case width of 49mm (the actual dial is 32mm wide). You'll have to be prepared for a watch that takes up most of your wrist, but you do want to show a watch like this off. If you aren't in love with the black on gray palette on the dial, there are a few other colors available with white, red, and of course the black. Be aware that this is a limited edition watch of only 50 pieces in each tone. Not to worry though, because if you like the Nazca collection there are many other models (a bit different and without the power reserve). Each shares the iconic looking chiseled case. This particular model will run you about $5000.  Check them out and enjoy.

For one thing, the Outland will be available in more colors and materials than just the PVD black on black strap. In fact, there is a pink gold version available, and a matte steel version, along with various dial colors (black, gray, and gold). Further, the Outland can be fitted with inset diamonds. To be honest, I am not sure why a watch like this needs diamonds, but it seems to be on the haute list of things to do right now. So RSW probably feels inclined to do as such. It is not a problem, because the masculine versions of the watch look great. The inspiration for the design is 1970s post modernism, but with a 21st century touch. In fact, the main idea behind the watch was to imbue a watch with the look of a compass. Personally, I don't see a compass, I see something more akin to a modern V6 engine. The large hex screws look like piston shafts, and the whole watch has a very machine-like quality to it. Nevertheless, RSW had it's heart in the Outland while designing it.

I'd love to get my hands on one of these to see it in action. I imagine the rotating discs, especially the seconds disc is addictive to watch, and once you get used to the layout, telling the time could very well be easier than on a traditional analog watch. Going with a well-done artistic industrial feel, the tone of the watch seems to be less amateur than many of the industrial themed watches out there. But then again, you are going paying for Swiss quality with the RSW. The Outland is a broad watch at 52mm long and 44mm wide. However, it is thin for the size at only 12mm high off the wrist. One aspect of the watch I am eager to experience is their unique crank-crown system that each RSW watch has. Apparently the crown pulls out or folds out and cranks around an axis as opposed to mere rotation. Should be fun to operate.

Not one to be obtuse about pricing, I am glad that RSW has remained relatively sober in this area at well. Retail is about $3000 to $12,000 depending on the materials used and style. Not too bad considering the design, function, and fact that this is anything but a mainstream watch.

The Outland utilizes an idea I actually considered some time ago using revolving disks to indicate the time rather than hands. With out major modification to a standard movement, you can have rotating discs that act as digital rather than analog indicators. If the concept of digital and analog is not clear to you, the idea is that digital shows something through abstract representation, while analog "looks like what it is." Here the abstract representation of time are the numbers that we use (1,2,3,4,....), the analog representation are the hands orientating themselves to show the time. Digital and analog have nothing to do with electronic versus mechanical movements, as I have learned is considered the difference by some people.

Due to the fact that the RSW uses discs with digital characters (the numbers) combined with their analog rotation results in what is a hybrid approach, that I have called "Digilog." No doubt this term is trademarked elsewhere, but the idea is clear. What I like is that RSW was able to combine the attraction of an analog watch, with the legibility of a digital watch. At least in theory that is the case. To tell the time displayed on the discs where they intersect with the broad white indicator line at the lower section of the watch. The outer disc reads the hours, then middle disc reads the minutes, and the smallest inner disc with minimal markers displays the seconds.

It is hard to say what life with this watch would be like. It could well prove to be a more comfortable means of telling the time over traditional analog watch faces, or it could be just a gimmick. Regardless, it is a novel idea worth paying attention to. Surrounding the discs is a common futuristic design that RSW uses. To me it looks like what happens when Art Deco meets 1980s industrial design. So many parts of the RSW Outland Automatic watch I want to press or push, but they are not buttons; and I don't know whether I am looking at a mini car engine or modern looking turntable. Always something interesting coming out of RSW.
