Sinn EZM 10 Watch

This will be German Sinn's new flagship rough activity watch, and the tenth watch to bear the EZM title. I quite love this watch and further find it interesting that it is quite retro in design in comparison to where the EZM series was going. Though not like 1950's retro - which is a darn good thing. Nevertheless, the piece contains some great modern technology and will make Sinn fans and newbies to the brand alike want one.

"EZM" stands for "Einsatzzeitmesser" which means "mission timer." These are among Sinn's more serious pieces and have been delighting both collectors and the people that really need them for years. The release of a new EZM watch is always cause for pause. As of writing this article, the Sinn EZM 10 is still in "pre-official announcement mode." I will update this article with more details and images as they become available - so sorry for the fuzzy looking scan.

The look and design of this watch feels like something out of the Lemania 5100 movement days. Even the movement is meant to remind you of the Lemania 5100 I feel - which may very well be what Sinn modified or used as a base design for the movement - or something similar to that. Sinn is calling the automatic movement their caliber SZ01. We will get more details on that soon. Offering a cool tri-compax subdial array, the chronograph features a central seconds and minutes indicator (yay!), as well as a subdial for the chronograph hours. There are also subdials for the time seconds and a synchronized 24 hour indicator (AM/PM indicator more or less). Beautifully symmetrical, the dial is both legible and packed with useful features. There is also a date indicator of course.

Also very important is that the movement features Sinn's coveted DIAPAL technology which uses a lubrication-free escapement. This is also one of the first Sinn DIAPAL (diamond palette) watches that does not have the metallic gray dial, but rather a more traditional black dial.

Don't you love those almost Tutima-style inset chronograph pushers on the case? They offer a clean look, but also tend to be easy to operate. The case is 44mm wide in tegimented titanium. Tegimented steel is a material Sinn uses that is treated to be much harder than steel. This is the first time I have seen Sinn offer tegimented titanium. As titanium is a tough, but soft metal, I am curious to know how this affects its scratch resistance. The chronograph pushers are done in PVD black. Overall I think the case material is just one of the Sinn EZM 10's strong points.

Over the rotating bezel is a sapphire crystal insert. Another first for Sinn, following suit with brands like Blancpain and Bremont who offer this to the delight of wearers. Sapphire crystal on bezels gives them a nice mixture of legibility and durability. Given that it is an EZM model, the case will have all the requisite "super man watch" technologies such as being highly water resistant, temperature resistant (-45 degrees C - +80 degrees C), have Sinn's anti humidity (Ar technology) feature, be highly anti-magnetic, and also be very shock resistant. Also worth mentioning is how the EZM 10 watch comes with a 5 year warranty.

Sinn will offer the EZM 10 on at least two strap options (leather or silicone) and on a titanium bracelet. I love the functionality, the sort of retro looks of the watch (more like 1970s retro if anything), and of course the durability. This is gonna be the new grail Sinn piece for many people. According to Sinn it will be available in November 2011. Price? Higher than most Sinn watches but perhaps worth it given all the next features and the technology. Prices start at 3,950 Euros on the leather strap, to 4,170 Euros on a silicone strap (must be some strap), and 4,250 Euros on the titanium bracelet. Check for updates on this Germanic beauty soon.

Sinn 358 Chronograph Watches

Almost under the radar comes this new Sinn 358 watch. Did I intend to make that initial statement because this is a pilot watch? No but it works. I love timepieces like this that are all tool and do not look like they are made to be worn by tools. German Sinn watches continue to make me happy for mostly dismissing the pressures of the high-end watch world to upmarket all decent watches out there. Not that Sinn watches are cheap, but rather that they mostly feel fairly priced.

The 358 collection is a good sign because it shows Sinn increasing the sizes of a few of their core collection watches. In essence, the 358 is a larger version of the outgoing 356. At 42mm wide, the 358 offers a more modern and Western-appealing version of the 356's 38.5mm wide case. The case is done in bead-blasted steel and comes with an acrylic domed crystal. Why acrylic? Sinn claims it is better for shock-resistance, but they also thankfully offer a sapphire crystal as an option (standard on some models). Actually to be perfectly accurate each of the three 358 models have different "standard" parts. Though it seems as though most of those parts and features can be optioned around. Basically you can get the model 358 of your choice through Sinn easily enough via a special order.

Another option is an air dehumidifying system that Sinn uses in many of its watches to remove potential moisture that can build up in the dial and cause condensation or fogginess. This can be a problem during quick rises or descents in a plane or just when rapidly changing climates (think of walking outside into hot humid air from an air-conditioned building). You can learn more about this technology here, and Sinn watches with it will have a little "Ar" logo on the dial. By the way, Sinn Ar watches only come with sapphire crystals.

Water resistant to 100 meters, the 358 is also highly antimagentic (with the solid caseback), and low pressure resistant. These are serious tool watches for serious use. The basic 358 model is called the 358 Pilot, which then goes up to the 358 Sa Pilot (Sa stands for "sapphire"), topping out with my favorite model, the 358 DIAPAL. I went into some detail a few years ago on what DIAPAL is here. You can read about it direct from Sinn here. DIAPAL is basically a oil-free (no lubrication) escapement that Sinn developed some years ago. Others have followed suit. This increases the lifespan of the watch and ensure more trouble-free usage. Sinn gives each of their DIAPAL watches metallic charcoal gray dials so you can them apart easily. I love the idea of these system in watches as such as this. The 358 Diapal is the top-of-the-line model in this collection and when combined with a metal bracelet is sure to be a hell of a watch. Don't forget it also has a GMT hand that is easy to miss.

Speaking of bracelet, these watches are available with a range of straps and a single metal bracelet option at this time. The dial is classic, legible, and stately. It is probably the epitome of German watch incarnate. Little details come out with close inspection such as how the chronograph subdials are all different and optimized for easy reading. People today will feel it is a bit retro, but that is totally in. I have a feeling they will find it fashionable as well, something which is good, but also nothing Sinn seems to be concerned with.

Inside the watches are Swiss ETA Valjoux 7750 automatic chronograph movements that are decorated and finely regulated by Sinn. The 358 DIAPAL however has a 7750 with a GMT module (and day of the week is removed). This gives the movement an independently adjustable GMT hand, but sadly there is no 24 hour scale to go with the hand.

Last, there is a limited edition of 500 pieces Sinn 358 Anniversary model meant to celebrate 50 years of Sinn. This model has a bi-compax dial and an even more retro look. As a nice daily wear any of these models would do just find. It is also a watch that no one can complain about you wearing. Prices are in the 2,000 - 3,000 Euros range.

Sinn EZM 7 Watch

Sinn has been getting real divers and desk divers alike drooling from the mouth since the 1990s with their seriously pro EZM line of watch. "EZM" stands for Einsatzzeitmesser, which roughly translates into "mission timer." Really happy they chose to shorten that word to just "EZM." Also sounds E-Z to say. These watches have come in different forms over the years, but have all shared a more or less signature DNA look. Now in its seventh iteration - the EZM is starting to get some color.

It is really quite difficult for Sinn to improve upon the durability of timepieces like this. They are all super hero watches. Some just have slightly differing powers. Each is a perfect companion to "take into a fight." Like other Sinn watches the EZM 7 has a tegimented steel case - which is a hardening technique that makes the steel hard being 1200 vickers in hardness. The steel has aÂ sandblasted finish and the case is 43mm wide by just 12mm thick. Sinn uses their special AR coating technique on the sapphire crystal. Few crystals are as clear as those Sinn offers.

The case is water resistant to 200 meters and has a special humidity prevention system. Part of it is that little thing on the side of the case that looks like a helium escape valve. This is there to prevent the dial from ever fogging up. It goes without saying that the case is quite shock resistant and also highly anti-magnetic. The caseback is nickel-free for those who have allergies.

Colorful as the dial maybe, it is there for a purpose. Though in my laziness (and perhaps Sinn's laziness as well), I didn't feel like translating the thorough explanation PDF into English. So visit Google Translate and see what this German language PDF on the Sinn EZM 7 is all about.

Basically the watch takes into account certain specific timed event that people of various professions need. This includes divers, firefighters, EMT's, etc... The color coded segments of the bezel and dial provide easy references on operating the timing functions. According to Sinn, the EZM 7 makes these things "easy as child's play." Ironic a bit, but OK.

You'll notice that the crown is on the left side of the case - this is to prevent it from digging into your wrist and is common on EZM models. Inside the watch is a regulated Swiss ETA 2893-2 automatic watch with the time, date, and aÂ GMT hand. Like most Sinn watches the EZM 7 watch is available in a rubber strap, various types of leather straps, and Sinn's really nice matching metal bracelet. Not too sure about the price -but it should be a few thousands dollars and out soon. Until Zenith releases a new version of their famous Rainbow watch, this is gonna be one of the best "colorful" professional watches around.

Sinn 900 Pilot S Chronograph Watch

Die Fliegeruhr 900 FLIEGER S! Der groÃŸe Fliegerchronograph! This new tool watch from German brand Sinn is a handsome looker, and saying "screw you!" (in German) to fashion watches. This pilot style watch is a compliment to similar dive chronograph watches from Sinn. Such as theÂ U1000. While the 900 Pilot is no longer brand spanking new, the 900 Pilot S, which is in black, is new. See my previous article on the Sinn 900 Pilot watch here.

I love the hard industrial feel of the watch. The pure dedication to function and durability that still ends up looking nice. Sort of makes sense that Sinn made a limited edition watch for Hummer right? Does the addition of a PVD coated black on the watch make it fundamentally different from the non PVD version? Not really, but the look of an all black sports watch is a force to be reckoned with. Both models feature hard tegimented steel,Â and 44mm wide cases that are 200 meters water resistant and have massive endurance against magnetic fields and shock. The dials are also argon (AR) gass filled to prevent them from fogging up. This is useful when entering a hot humid day after being inside of a nicely air conditioned room. Also good when jumping out of a plane.

The 900 S name means "900 Schwartz," which is "black" in German. The "S" label on an Sinn watch means that it is a black version of a timepiece that is also available in a non black version. I just get so much more excited about the 900 S rather than the 900. The watch has a Swiss ETA Valjoux 7750 movement, but it has a GMT module on it. Thus the watch has a GMT hand. It also has an internal rotating diver's bezel - but in this instance Sinn calls it a pilot bezel. That might mean it rotates in both directions, and as you can see, each number in the 60 minute scale is printed out. Makes for a neat look. The hands and markers on the dial are easy to read and lack nonsense - they are also applied with a bunch of lume. On the back of the watch case, engraved in the caseback are various measurement conversion tables - a nice functional use of the caseback for quick and rough conversions.

On the five-link black steel bracelet the watch looks best in my opinion. It is also available on a series of leather or silicone straps that most Sinn watches are also available on. You can read more about the Sinn 900 in the previous post that I link to above. I look forward to getting my hands on one of these. Most of the specs are the same. Price for the watch is between about 2,470, - 2,825 Euros, likely more in the US. I have a feeling that these are gonna be hot Sinn watches for a while (just like the 757 was). But look out for them if you want one.

Sinn Model 902 Limited Edition Watch

I think Audi is the brand to mostly thank for this new Sinn timepiece. Back in 2004 (ish) they worked with Sinn to create a couple of limited edition watches branded "Audi Design." Those watches (at least some of them) you can see below, and seem to be where this squareish, cushion case style came from. Now at the end of 2010, Sinn revisits this case aesthetic with the Model 902. A very interesting retro-futuristic watch with the heart of an aviator, and a designer body.

At first I was a bit odded out by the case and dial style. It didn't remind me of the ruthless instrumental looks of Sinn watches that thematically resemble the cold gaze of a Doberman Pincher while on patrol. Rather, the Model 902 is what Hans straps on his wrist after pulling on a black turtleneck and affixing his perfectly round lensed glasses before reading over Teutonic existentialism. The era of idealist futurism from 1971 is where the design of this watch seems to have come from. Like the guy selling timeshares for property on the Moon back then would have worn this watch. Despite the retro naivety, there is a handsome hopefulness to the design. The aviator style hands communicate strength and precision, while the hard Tegimented steel cases gives it that Sinn character the little name on the dial promises.

Alas, for all my hope of wearing this watch and gazing longingly at a future vacationing on the moon, the piece might be sized too small for my tastes. While it is cubic in appearance (often looks larger) a width of just 34.4mm in diameter seems lacking. There is zero mention by Sinn of this watch being intended for women, but it isn't a large piece. Aside from some modern pieces, Sinn is a brand that doesn't go large. Those looking for a more petite, but good looking (and original feeling) timepiece will find a good companion here.

Assuming the size does jive with you, then you'll be happy to hear about the rest of its details. The bezel is polished steel, while the rest of the watch is in a satin finish. Sapphire crystal with very good AR coating, and the environmental resistance that Sinn watches are known for (suitable for low pressure environments, OK between -45 t0 80 degrees Celsius, and water resistant to 100 meters).

The watch crown is cool and looks like the top of a caste tower. The proudly German watch never misses a beat being a functional item - but here plays with a fashionable appearance. There is an interesting addition of the red colored seconds hand to the dial, and the hour markers are partially connected creating a second cushion shape within the dial that matches the case shape.Â Attached to the case via loop style lugs is a quality black leather strap.

In all, a fascinating design. I would totally wear one if Sinn added at least 4 more centimeters to the case size. Then again, maybe a "jumbo" version will come out at some point. The watch is likely sort of an experiment. Inside the watch is a Swiss ETA 2824-2 automatic movement. This watch is limited to just 300 pieces. Making it a rare limited edition Sinn that isn't based on another model with just a few small changes. The closest thing that I can compare it to is the Fortis Square. How much will each of these limited edition Model 902 watches cost? Not sure, but give the movement and Sinn's other prices, I would say in the $2,500 - $3,000 range most likely. UPDATE: Looks like it will go for 1,300 euros.

Sinn Model 243 Ti M Lady’s Watch

Did you know that Sinn makes lady's watches? Not too many of them, but they do. They are nice pieces - not what I would call pretty, but certainly handsome. To visualize this concept I am adding an image of a Greek statue of a woman. Handsome right? Not exactly "wow she is hot." Sinn lady's watches are nicely made, easy to read, and feminine - but not girl. I think of them as being worn by some German nurse named Hilda who probably moonlights as a bartender with a permanent serious look on her face. So new for 2010 is a "mocha" version in titanium of their 243 watch collection - called the Sinn 243 Ti M.

At 28mm wide, this tonneau shaped watch has a great finish for a titanium case. The proportions are... statuesque and classic. Why titanium? Really not sure. The light metal is popular on large men's watches to make them feel lighter. Aside from being hypo-allergenic, it isn't clear to me why a small women's watch needs to be lighter. As it is, the watch is 20 grams. But Sinn likes titanium for its 243 watches, and that is the way it is. Prior to this brown dialed version coming out, the collection was around with a black dial, cream dial, and a mother of pearl dial. Those are all arguably more girly than ms. serious over here.

Sinn watches are about function, but the 243 Ti needed a little flair. The galvanized metal dial has some gloss to it, and the rhodiumized hour markers and hands are all applied. Even though the case proportions are kind to the female demeanor, this is still a tool watch at heart. Easy to read and lume covered, this is a practical watch is there ever was one. For those ladies who shun wearing high-heels most of the time. Practical yes, but still in good taste. The sapphire crystal is AR coated on both sides for a really clear view of the dial. The tough case is 100 meters water resistant and pretty anti-magnetic, along with being low-pressure resistant (you know.. for those high altitude flights).

Inside the watch is a Swiss ETA 2671 automatic movement with a date (nicely placed in the lower center of the dial) - no quartz for these ladies! With a price around $2,000 - $2,500 these are luxury level watches that combine attractive looks and the stalwart functionality that German Sinn is known for. Aside from the brown leather strap, the watch has an available brown satin strap, or a titanium bracelet. A lot women are going to like this collection, and I think for good reason. As a guy, maybe this is a good collection to consider as a gift for certain types of women in your life. Such as a mother, sister, other close relatives, accountant, librarian, etc... The list of mature, non-romantic interest female types in your life just goes on! For a slightly sexier Sinn (a term that the brand should totally use in their marketing) check out their 456 series of women's watches.

Sinn 142 St II GZ Watch With Tide Chart Bezel

Sinn was pretty quiet this year at Baselworld 2010. I walked into their booth proudly wearing a Sinn watch myself to find not a soul that spoke English. Really Sinn? Actually, I can't be too surprised, the competent watch maker is a ghost in the United States. With just one authorized dealer (only online), Sinn watches aren't exactly common 'round these parts. But that shouldn't be the case. 2010 didn't have any super exciting new Sinn models that herald in a new era of "superman watch," but there area few interesting pieces. One is the U200 - which is a 'big boy's watch" for smaller wrists. And then there is this unique Sinn 142 St II GZ. An obfuscatory and odd name for a pretty interesting watch. In addition to the Dubois Depraz Calibre 2070 (base ETA 2892-A2) automatic movement its chronograph, synced 24 hour hand, and date, the watch has the first "tide bezel" I've ever seen.

The interesting function allows you to set the bezel, and then figure out the tides in a given area for that day. It is a much more low-tech solution in comparison to the many fancy electronic based tide chart watches out there. At the top of the spectrum are complex timepieces where you set the date and your longitude and latitude and you can accurately see tide charts for as long in the future as you can imagine. For this Sinn, the inner bezel needs to be adjusted so that you indicate the time of day where the last high tide occurred by lining up the inner bezel appropriately. Then, you can use the hour hand to track the ebb and flow of the tides along the blue indicator. Yes, it is simple and requires external data, but it is an elegant and attractive solution for those who need the data, and want a Sinn style timepiece on their wrists. If you want, you can use a website like this one to see tide times all over the US, so that you can adjust your Sinn 142 St II GZ before going out that day. It does beg the question though, why you'd want a mechanical watch to do something a digital watch clearly can do with much more precision and power. So for me. this complication is interesting and useful, but for people primarily want the watch for its other features (or have a very specific set of needs that the watch is able to satisfy).

Like the standard Sinn 142 collection, the watch is in a 44mm wide steel case with a sand-blasted finish all over. Makes for a sober, modern tool-look. Though the oblong case with the round dial looks like those "space watches" from a while back mixed with some 70's retro diving watches. The case is water resistant to 100 meters, and has one of Sinn's legendary comfy metal bracelets (with a diver's extension). You can also get the watch on a leather strap. Style-wise the piece is unique for its black, blue, white, and red tones in the Sinn family. Legibility is very good, with Sinn's typical sense of Germanic, manly quirkiness. Reading the dialÂ is aided by the doubly AR coated sapphire crystal. Sinn's watch dials are so clear because they do an excellent job of making the crystals glare free. Look for the Sinn 142 St II GZ watch soon for a few thousand bucks.

Sinn U1 White Limited Edition Watch Available On James List

I don't know how a watch like this slipped through the cracks. It came out just last summer as a limited edition. This is a very interesting and rare Sinn watch that is thankfully available on James List, and for not that much dough. Many of you know of the super functional and durable Frankfurt, Germany based watch maker Sinn. A few years ago they released one of their most style forward watches ever, the U1. It has a few limited editions including an all black, Sinn U Black (not typo, just "U"). Well this is another limited edition, called the Sinn U1 White (sometimes U1 Snow). It takes the almost opposite approach than that of the all back U Black. The White is a high contrast U1 model that is not only easy to read, but really stands out. White is quite a hot color right now for watches, and the U1 Snow capitalizes on that fact with a white strap and dial. The rest of the watch though is in PVD coated black. Combine the black & white look with the Bauhaus style of the dial hands and numerals you have yourself a winning design, at least in my humble opinion.

Aside from the special colorings, the watch should be the same as your normal rugged Sinn U1 watch. Case is in very hard tegimented steel and 44mm wide. Not 100% sure, but movement is likely a Swiss ETA 2824-2 automatic with hacking seconds. The diver watch has 1000 meters of water resistance and a very nice to use rotating diver's bezel. Sinn only made about 375 of these watches. The version with the white strap was only available in Europe and Asia. The few U1 White watches that came to the US only arrived with the black rubber strap. For some odd reason, the "black/white" strap option yielded a bit of a debate among watch lovers. Many people hated the white strap. Thought perhaps it was feminine. I don't agree, I love it, and this it goes great with the all black case of the watch.

You can't get this watch from Sinn any longer, but since the watch was released so recently, there are a handful of them out there. This one on James List is going for about $2,200.

Sinn 756 UTC Diapal Lubricant Free Watch Available

Really quick. Here is one of the coolest Sinn watches out there, and really rare at that. This is the 756 UTC Dialpal, which is the 757 UTCmodel without the rotating bezel. The Diapal name refers to a diamond palette system used instead of jewels between the gears. The system is so "slippery" that the movement needs no oil to lubricate these areas. The whole idea beyond just looking cool is to allow the watch to go much longer between servicing. This watch retails for over $3,000 and is basically impossible to get in a lot of situations. The one pictured is available on eBay right now, as is at about $900 at the time of writing. Anything up to $3,500 is going to be worth it for this amazing piece of watch technology.I discussed Sinn Diapal watches more here.

Inside is a modified automatic Valjoux 7750 movement. In addition to the Diapal system, the seconds dial has been removed and a GMT hand has been added. The Diapal version has a different colored dial than the standard 756 watch without the lube free movement. The watch comes on Sinn's high quality steel bracelets a both the 43mm wide case and bracelet are specially hardened tegimented steel. I really want ones of these watches myself someday.

Sinn 900 Flieger Watch: The “Big Aviator Chronograph”

Now with "advanced Entspiegelungstechnik!" That word actually just means anti-reflective (AR) sapphire crystal coating, but it sounds superbly Germanic and fitting right? To be released in the late Spring of 2009, this new Sinn Model 900 series watch is pretty good looking, and the size is up to 44mm, which is considered "big" for Sinn (most case sizes are between 38mm -41mm wide). Like the other 900 models, this watch uses a base ETA Valjoux 7750 movement with a UTC hand modification. That gives it a full 12 hour chronograph, date, time, and 24 hour hand (that is independently adjustable to use as a second timezone if desired). Unlike the other 900 model watches, this Flieger is a lot more simple looking and attractive. Looking like cousin of the Sinn 757, the 900 is all about pilot watch duty. If it is suitable for day to day wear, it does so without caring.

The rear of the watch has a metric to standard conversion chart of some basic units of measurement that you might be interested in. This might come in useful once in a while for you, but consider the purist who will use it frequently. The case of the 44mm wide is constructed out of tegimented steel that is much harder that normal steel. The case is also water resistant to 200 meters and can resist magnetic fields of up to 80,000 A/M. Not a magnetism expert, so I am going to assume that is enough to fend-off Magneto level magnetic fields.

You'll notice that the metal bracelet is Sinn's five link steel bracelet that it tends to use on it's higher-end watch models, and the thick leather strap has a nifty looking attached plate with the Sinn logo on it. With a thin bezel, the watch features an internal rotating bezel that is turned via the crown located at the 10 o'clock position. The internal rotating bezel is highly functional and something I have never seen before in this style - with Arabic numeral indictors for each minute. Very precise and a look that I like. You then have the indicators (Arabic for every other number) for the UTC hand as well, that while visible - don't seem to get in the way. Sinn "guarantees" high visibility and the luminant-covered hands contrast well with the galvanized black watch face. The little "Ar" indicator means that the face is filled with argon gas - part of a special system to keep the inside of the watch free from moisture, and running smoothly in almost any climate condition, and under all types of pressure conditions. Further assisting the moisture free zone of the watch is a moisture absorbing capsule in the watch indicated by the other little icon above the "Ar" on the watch dial.

Other notable features about the watch are that the case is nickle-free (for people who are allergic to the metal), and that the sapphire crystal uses one of the best AR coatings in the industry. Let it be known that this is a serious tool watch, not merely something trouncing around as one. It will serve you well and focus primarily of getting the job done right. If you like how it looks, admire it gracefully, but Sinn watches don't like to be pampered. Price will be around $2,500 - $3,000 when it comes out in May.
