Suunto Core Extreme Edition Silver Watch Review

A few years ago Suunto first released the Core. It was to be a stylish, highly variable in design, multi-sensor watch for everyone. The concept seemed to combine everything people likes about Sunnto and multi-sensor watches together. The Core was an immediate hit, but like all complex computerized item, it has some issues. People complained about battery life, durability, etc... Like many other watch brands with similar watches, and similar problems Suunto got to work on fixing these issues. Now, several years later, the Suunto Core is fitted with a much better movement. Here is the relatively new Suunto Core Extreme Edition Silver. It is a limited edition version of the Core, with a look that reminds brand lovers of their popular big dive computer timepieces.

Suunto set up a decent website to showcase the features of the Core here. It doesn't let you interact with the watch completely, but there are a few "lessons" that show you what the watch does (in a nutshell) and how to do it. In fact, probably my biggest gripe with Suunto products is the documentation. They come with relatively large manuals, but once you open then, you realize that they are so big because they are in like 30 languages. The actual substance in the guide is limited. I think they want you to go online to learn more. They should make that more clear. Also, if you are "in the field" and need a quick reference, you most likely aren't going to have any way of getting online to check things out. But like I said, in addition to the interactive website, there are PDF versions of the guides you can download - which I recommend you do if you get any Suunto watch.

The Core watch itself is pretty sweet, and if you are at all a tech savvy person, orienting yourself on how to use most of the features is pretty straight forward. Half of the user experience is easy and logical, but there are some things that require some digging. For example, you can't easy see altimeter and barometer information. You need to go into a menu and choose which of the two you prefer to have easy access to. Suunto has been doing that for years, and I am not really sure why. Other similar watches don't require that. The menus are pretty nice actually. So even if the key features of the watch aren't all as easy to access as on a Casio (for example), the menus are a lot easier to use than on a Casio. Suunto does a good job at allowing you to work with the watch. One thing they do is have visual indicators on the LCD screen near the buttons that are available while in any given more or menu. That way you don't need to hunt as much for "what to do next." While not perfect, I give the Suunto Core user interface system relatively high marks.

Looking at the dial in the default view, you have the time, permanent visuals for the sensor mode selection (with a digital circle around the selected one), as well as a variable information strip below. Being the most important piece of information, the time is large and easy to read on the decently pixelated LCD screen. The strip below the time and mode selection indicator can be used to display a few piece of information (or even to be blank for a cleaner look on the dial). Here you can see the date, the seconds (there is also a small seconds indication marker much of the time around the periphery of the dial), second timezone, sunrise/sunset data (which pulls info from a predefined location and the calendar), the stopwatch, or the countdown timer. In other modes, this strip is used for other information (such as the temperature in altimeter or barometer mode). This little level of dial customization is nice. Some people might not like the "side burner" approach to key features such as the stopwatch or countdown timer, but I didn't mind at all.

All the Core features are listed below, but in a nutshell it does a few major things. It has the time, calendar, alarm, second timezone, stopwatch (chronograph), countdown timer, sunrise and sunset times, altimeter (with graphical log), barometer (with log for weather prediction data), compass, and a depth meter. Some of these functions are easier to use than others, but you can safely use all of them without too much worry about complexity. The latter feature, the depth meter is sort of funny. It uses the pressure sensor for the altimeter and barometer for this. But please note that this is not a diving watch. Suunto has some awesome diving computer, but the Suunto Core is for light diving only. With water resistant of only 30 meters, it isn't recommended that you dive more than 10 meters with the watch (about 33 feet). So while it is a cool feature to have, most snorkelers for example, don't really need this information, and you can't use the Core for more serious diving duty. I just sort of see it as a fun additional feature, thrown into the mix by Suunto's engineers.

If the style of the Extreme Edition Silver model doesn't suit you, then there are plenty more to choose from. In accordance with Suunto ideas, the basic watch case is quite large at about 50mm wide. There are different bezel, case style, color, and strap options, as I am sure you will notice if looking around at the various available Core pieces. Although it is large, the case is comfy thanks to the light weight and straps that wrap around nicely. The straps are all well-made using high quality resins (basically plastic). Usually nicer than when Casio offers, and often more stylish as well. The buckle on the clasp is metal, which means it is more durable, and it has a secure fit. One issue is that when you put the watch on, the excess strap doesn't always go into the strap loop easily given the friction. Not a bit deal though, but it makes the watch just a bit harder to put on and take off. This isn't an issue with all the straps I assume.

Suunto has always provided a very easy to open (using a coin) battery replacement compartment. The batteries they uses are often available at a local drug store, being basic CR2032 cells. So you don't need to hunt around for the right battery when it runs out. I imagine the battery will last for a year or two. The crystal is inset a bit from the bezel to protect it. I believe it is made from some high grade acrylic. Those looking for Sunnto watches with sapphire crystals and higher end metal cases should opt for a Suunto Elementum watch (that I reviewed here and here). What I really want is for Suunto to design a high end Elementum style watch with the movement (or similar) from the Core.

The Suunto Core is a totally viable everyday watch for someone who likes something large, active looking, and digital on their wrist. I like it as an activity watch. I've traveled with it, taken it into the woods, biked around with it, and been overall satisfied. The back light works pretty well for seeing the time in the dark, and the information that is available at your finger tips is useful. Lots of watches have functions like this, but the Core is pretty adept at making them accessible after figuring out the basics of how to use the watch. I have no problem recommending the Core to people looking for a good quality multi-sensor watch for basic use. More serious explorers, divers, etc... might opt for something a bit better suited to specific functions given their needs, but the Core is a good well-rounded watch with a robust feature set. The Suunto Core Extreme Edition Silver limited model is priced at $329, while the overall Core collection retails from about $250 - $500 depending on the style.

Suunto Elementum Terra Watch Review

Every time I run into someone wearing a Suunto watch, I can't help but ask them how they like their watch. Often times I catch them off guard. Before a "hello," I just spew out, "how do you like your (Observer, X-Lander, Elementum, etc...)." Usually they take a moment to process what I am asking them, until they finally respond with something positive. What I find interesting is that many Suunto watch owners I've met have a collection of watches that include pieces in the several thousands of dollars. Still, I don't see them wearing their Breitling, Rolex, or IWC, they have their Suunto on.

The Suunto Elementum line is a new more luxurious line from the "wrist top computer" brand. The Terra is my second Elementum model, as I previously reviewed the Suunto Elementum Aqua watch here. The theme of the Elementum watch line is interesting - it breaks away a bit from the main functional line for which Suunto has a large existing fan base. The Elementum line is more expensive and uses higher quality components that most of the models, but also represents something a bit differentÂ - simplicity. The Elementum watches are arguably much easier to use than the other Suunto models. Not that those other watches are difficult to use, but rather that the Elementum watches feature what I like to call "functional simplicity." The watches do just a few things, and try to do them effectively and simply. This means that after just a few minutes playing with the Terra watch you'll get the hand of how to use all of its functions. Suunto opted for broad functionality over inaccessible functionality.

Having said that, the Elementum Terra incorporates a handful of useful functions that are all quite easy to use. Actually that leads me to my biggest complaint about the watch. I think Suunto feels that the functions are so easy to use that it neglects to tell anyone about how to use them. The watch comes with a thick instruction manual. It looks promising, but once you look at it, you realize that instead of being thorough, it is just in a ton of different languages. There is no real guide in how to use the watch, not even really a guide discussing all the watch's functions. So while the watch is great and simple to use, for the cost of the watch, I think Suunto could take a lesson from Casio (who makes some almost comically intense guidebooks for their watches).

So let's discuss what the Suunto Elementum does. It has two sensors in it. A pressure senors an electronic compass. The pressure sensor (as seen on the back) has a dual purpose of giving the barometric pressure and altitude data. The main screen of the watch shows the time, date, altitude, and barometric pressure trend and reading all the time. I find that this is nice. Most of the watch's main functions are always right there for you to see. The compass can be accessed at a push of a button. The barometric pressure scale turns into a pointer for North, and the watch dial reads out the degrees you are pointing in. The watch also features an alarm and simple chronograph. The chronograph measures 1/100 of a second for a minute, and then after that measures up to 99 minutes (not 100% sure of the max chronograph time as I never went that far).

The watch also has two timezones. You can switch between the two relatively easily. You also get a nifty logging function for the altimeter. It tells you how long you have been climbing and how much altitude you gained. The logging features helps you look over your climb. Keeping with the simple nature of the watch, there is no seconds indicator on the dial. The watch case is steel in an almost sandblasted look. It is almost the same as that on the Elementum Aqua, but has an additional pusher. The top pusher is the cool job dial that I really like a lot on the Elementum line. Use it to access the chronograph, and climbing meter. When accessing the functions, the beep the watch makes have a nice volume and is substantial. Not a weak beep at all. There is also a bright backlight for the watch. Just push down the middle pusher for a couple of seconds to activate the entire screen illuminating green glow.

The high quality feeling steel case is 44mm wide with a 24mm wide 21mm leather strap. The available metal bracelet is thicker, and there are also a few styles of rubber strap available. I tested teh Suunto Elementum Auqa on the metal bracelet that I liked, and the leather strap on this model is equally nice (nice signed buckle as well). Like all models in the Elementum line, the watch is water resistant to 100 meters.Â The bezel is different than that on the Aqua, being thinner and without the screws in it. This makes the dial look bigger. This model has a standard LCD screen. I tend to like negative (reverse) LCD screens such as the one I had on the Elementum Aqua, but I have to admit that this is one of the most beautiful and clear LCD screens that I have ever seen. I don't think and LCD screen can get any more crisp than this. It also helps that the crystal is sapphire. If you've had Suunto watches in the past, but not an Elementum, you'll be impressed with the step up in quality and construction here. Not that Suunto was lacking before, but this is a new level of luxury for Suunto.

To replace the battery in the watch you need to unscrew the hour Philips head screws in the back of the watch. Suunto uses the very popular CR2032 battery that is widely available. That means you don't need to look much further than a drug store for a new battery. No more overpriced trips to the watch store or getting something questionable from China when the battery power goes out. In my experience, Suunto watches go for about 2 years on a battery. The dial should have a low battery indicator as well.

Suunto fan purists will be pleased to know that the Elementum line of watch is made in Finland, the home of the brand. This is just where you want the watches to be made - as the quality will be the best for your money. You want your Volkswagen built in Germany right? Not Mexico. Same idea. Prices for this luxury Suunto watch are in the same range as the Elementum Aqua. Retail for the Elementum Terra is $899 - $1199. An expensive proposition, but you'll quickly justify the price when you compare the quality of this timepiece to similar ones out there with the same functionality. With the Elementum watch line, Sunnto has take the multi-sensor watch to a new status level.

Suunto Elementum Aqua Diver Watch Review

I've been a Suunto fan ever since I got my first Suunto watch back in college. That was a negative LCD Suunto Observer, and is still one of my favorite digital watches. I was intrigued back then by the Finnish brand that didn't sell "watches," but rather "wrist-top computers." A few battery changes later I still have my Suunto Observer, and now I present to you my review of a brand new Suunto watch. Born out of the new Elementum line, this is the Aqua, and is the most dedicated diving watch I have ever owned. The elegance and simplicity of this watch's functionality is impressive. It is a very focused watch, and requires next to no learning curve to figure out how to use it. It does a few key tasks, and does them very well.

Before moving on to the functions of this watch, let's look at the style. This model has the negative LCD screen (my favorite) and the metal bracelet. The watch is also available with a normal LCD screen and many different types of straps - in different materials. The watch is also available in black. The style of the watch is unique for Suunto and closely resembles German UTS watches — also diver watches. The steel of the case is done in a unique manner, somewhere between a satin and sandblasted finish. The crown, pusher, screws, and bracelet links are all done in a polished finish. The screws in the bezel give it an underwater nautical instrument look, somewhere between the porthole and a gauge on a submarine. The overall style of the case shares this instrumental look. The lugs are interesting as they curve down sharply when looking at the came from the side. It makes the bottom of Elementum Aqua almost totally flat, and it is comfortable. The case is also about 45mm wide.

The bracelet is comfortable and attractive, and 24mm wide. The small links make it good for sizing as you get a more precise fit. The deployment is push button and diminutive, relatively well done and easy to operate. The irony is that the metal bracelet is the hardiest of the straps, but the worst for actual diving. I would recommend one of the rubber straps for diving. I’ll tell you why. Unless you are never going to wear your Elementum Aqua on your wrist, the bracelet will not fit over your dive suit as it does not have a diver’s extension. So you either size the bracelet for your diver suite, use the watch for non suit diving, or swap in a rubber diving bracelet for those purposes. It is a minor thing, but something you should know for a watch that is such a dedicated diver’s watch.

Looking at the back of the watch you can see the water intake sensor. This is the pressure sensor for the depth meter. You also learn that the watch is suitable for 200 meters of water resistance. This means it is a good diving watch for most, but not all diving. All purpose diving watches are typically 300m water resistant. Again, this is not a big deal especially given the great functionality that the Aqua has for most diving purposes.

The dial is where you will be spending more of your visual time. You can tell that the dial is sectioned off into a few years. There are three vertical levels, and there is a peripheral temperature gauge. The default screen shows the time (in either 12 or 24 hour format) and the date. There is no seconds display. You can tell that the Elementum Aqua has a pusher where the crown would normally be, and a crown located at 2 o’clock. The crown is pretty cool, and operates like a rotating selector. You turn the crown to make settings changes and change the screens. When you twist the crown, it makes a slight by reassuring little click — this is a nice detail. Further, the crown is large enough and placed in a manner making it easy to operate with gloves (if you want to switch back to view the time while underwater). Normally the crown rotates the default and dive log screen. How the crown down and you enter the settings mode when you can adjust the time, date, etc… Of course you can also set the watch to the metric system as well as standard. Holding down the pusher normally activates the very good backlight. Also, the watch features an alarm function that is pretty easy to use.

So what about all the diving functions? They are all automatic and only operate underwater. There is a small sensor on the watch located at 10 o’clock. This is a dual purpose water and temperature sensor. When the watch is submerged in water a small water drop icon shows up on the dial and the watch enters “dive mode.” The screen changes to show four vital pieces of information; the dive time (how long you have been diving), current depth, maximum depth, and water temperature (displayed around the dial). After your dive you can use the log function to retrieve this data. It is just that simple. A no nonsense, no instruction necessary dive watch. The Suunto Elementum Aqua is the dive watch for dummies, and for a ton of people out there who don’t want to remember another set of instructions this watch is a godsend. Let’s face it, diving is a sport that requires a lot of equipment, has a lot of rules, and requires a lot to remember. The last thing you want to do is have a dive computer that you forget how to use underwater. This watch does all the hard stuff for you. Sure the options might be limited, but it does all the basics, and it does them well.

The dive log function stores information for the last 14 dives. It also keeps information like the surface time, the dates of the dives, and the number of dives. This is all good information to look back on.

The watch comes in a great looking black box with a well detailed instruction sheet and separate easy reference guide. Good documentation overall, but like I said, you won’t need too much time with the instructions because the functions are intuitive and straightforward. Besides, most of the functions are underwater only. With a retail price of $1,199 the Suunto Elementum Aqua is on the pricey side, though it is on par with its closest competitor which is the Tissot Sea-Touch. The good news is that actual street price is going to be more often than not less than the suggested retail price. A great addition to the Suunto line that is sure to resonate well with diving enthusiast fans of the brand and anyone who wants a simple to use and reliable dedicated diving watch instrument. Oh, and who doesn’t get a reassuring and cool feeling when they see “Manufactured In Finland” on a product. What else do you know that is made there?

Suunto Triathalon Collection t6c Red Arrow & t3c Black Arrow Watches

Suunto doesn't make just "watches," but rather "wrist-top computers." This new line of watches has been designed in partnership with the International Triathlon Union (ITU). That means the watches have been designed for some serious and specific training use. The traditional training watch was light weight, had some timing functions, and that is it. Later models enjoyed such functions like heart rate monitors, and other cool functions. But the Suunto t6c Red Arrow is light years ahead of the "past." The watch is part of an optional modular system of "Pods," which are units that are GPS devices, or others that fit on shoes, bicycles, etc.. .to help measure distance and cadence. In addition to all this available data, the t6c Red Arrow takes all this information together and has some clever software that not only logs and plots it for you, but helps to calculate calories burned, Excess Post-exercise Oxygen Consumption (EPOC), and Training Benefit (which is a measurement of the aerobic benefit of a training session, on a one-to-five scale). Little else out there does this, and only just a few more of you are familiar with these scales to keep tabs on. However, it is quite important when you are a serious triathlon trainer, or other athletic professional. One of the best features of the watches are the customizable displays that give you optional information at a glance - be it the time, your speed, cadence, heart rate, etc... The benefit to you is being able to adapt accordingly with having second by second updated information.

Gear like this is more than just a fancy watch, but exists to be an essential training tool. After each session, that watch can be optionally hooked up to your computer and all the data can be plotted in an accompanying program to help you understand your progress, training productivity, and overall results. This takes the guess work out of a lot of what people in training have to deal with. I've known Suunto watches to be quite serious about their ability to collect data, and are serious tools for professionals as opposed to gadget novelties. Price adds up for all the optional pods and accessories, but these instruments are a good investment. Just over $400 for the t6cÂ Red Arrow watch and more for the other components. The Black arrow ought to be much less.

In addition to the t6c Red Arrow, the t3c Black Arrow will be released soon. The new t3C is to be a bit less expensive and doesn't have quite as many functions. It still has all the basics and can be connected with the heart rate monitor, which is one of the most important parts of the training optimization equation. Both of the watches will be available this month. Both the t6c Red Arrow and t3c Black Arrow are supposed to be improvements on the current models that are out there in celebration of the connection with the International Triathlon Union. To be honest, I don't have all the information about comparing the new and old models, but the new ones will have a few new things. Look out for more detail in the future or check out Suunto.com.

Suunto Core Line Is Anything But Middlestream Wrist Computer

Last year Sunnto released the Core series of watches, attempting to merge style with Sunnto's almost legendary mixture of features and functions in what they call "wristop computers." The Core line does a great job of combining the functions that Suunto is known for. You get an altimeter (measuring altitude), barometer (barometric pressure for weather status and predictions), thermometer, digital compass, depth meter (up to 30 meters), sunrise and sunset times, and of course all the other features you would expect such as a timer, stopwatch, alarms, full calendar, and dual times. You might be saying to yourself, "sure it can do all that, but I'll never remember how to use it or access all that information." This is a valid concern, but to be honest, my experience with Suunto watches (I do own one) is that they are incredibly logical to use. The 5 available buttons on the case make it so that you don't need to frequently dive through menus or function trees to get what you want. If I have to mess with a watch for too long to figure it out, I stop wearing it. Actually you can read all about the Sunnto Core's features right here from Suunto themselves (and its not even in Finnish).

Suunto gave the Core line many styles with steel, rubber, or leather strap options. This is good news for those who desire the available features, but don't want their watch giving off too much of an "outdoorsy" look. There are actually 6 different models at this time, with more likely to come. Unlike some of the previous Suunto watches, the Core, while still large, has a much cleaner look. The Vector range that is similar to it made wearers look like they were right about to go for a dive. The Core range is decidedly more metropolitan, and fares well in urban jungle along with on a trail, underwater, or on a slope.

Another thing that Suunto does is offer inverted LCD screens. This way you can avoid the standard look of LCD screen making the numbers lighter than the black background, as opposed to dark number on a light background. This is a cool feature which I appreciate as it greatly enhances the look of an LCD screen. Suunto has always made good looking "tool" watches that are both functional and easy to live with. Their competitors are a range of smaller dive watch makers along with the Casio Pathfinder series. I prefer Suunto for their euro-cool attitude and appealing designs. They feel as though they are designed by the people who use them, as opposed to an engineer who is strictly concerned with functionality and could careless about how the watch looks or the ergonomics. That, combined with fair prices (about $150 - $300 for the Core line) make for a great watch to add to your collection.

Future Watch Tech Revealed: Nokia Eco Sesnor Concept Is A Digital Watch You Want to Wear

We usually stay away from far-fetched tech concepts, because it is never a good idea to make one salivate with news of something that might never become attainable. In this instance however, it is probably safe to say that such a device is within our grasp in the next ten years max. The Nokia Eco Sensor Concept brings about the functionality that Star Trek and all science fiction fans have desperately awaited. Namely, a convergence device that functions as a watch, communication device, health monitor, and environmental senor, all in a cool looking touch screen form factor.

While it is unclear whether this is a functioning concept, it uses available technology in realistic ways. From a time telling standpoint, the Eco Sensor merely utilizes available digital technology with GPS to tell the time in the right place. It uses various on board sensors along with the GPS to determine environmental conditions. There are plenty of watches today that use this technology, such as Suunto, which makes amazing "wrist-top computers" combining a watch, compass, altimeter, thermometer, and barometer, all in a neat and attractive little package. Further, companies like Suunto, among others, have been able to implement a number of sensors, such as heart rate, and body heat monitors into a watch. Thus, most all the technology that makes the Nokia Eco Sensor desirable is already in watch form in some way or another.

You might be asking yourself what the point of the Nokia Eco Sensor Concept is all about. Don't confuse yourself with thinking that this is just another pointless "do it all device." Far from it, it encapsulates the tools each person will need and come to expect. As mobile phones become a more permanent part of our overall daily "luggage," so are the other functions those devices provide. Even now, people are becoming accustomed to their phones providing e-mail, text messaging, cameras, and Internet navigation. A phone that is just a phone does not cut it anymore. Soon, we will come to except a phone to tell us what the weather is going to be like, what our blood pressure is, and of course we want it to fit on our wrist.

The detachable quality of a mobile phone is what makes them something disconnected enough to be forgotten or under utilized. Like the watches we wear today, a mobile device on your wrist will truly become part of every ensemble. It will function much like today's mobile phones as a device on your wrist is close enough to your hand, it will be the same action, but it will look like our hand it empty, and we will of course still use wireless headset's like today's Bluetooth headsets.

Because almost all the technology exists in some form or another already, the Nokia Eco Sensor Concept is not that far off from reality. Notice that it can be worn in several ways, but one of them is a a watch, on the wrist. That is the most exciting part of course. So while a digital computer watch is not going to steal the hearts of die hard mechanical watch enthusiasts, it is a sign of things to come. Even the vast amount of functionality that the Nokia Eco Sensor provides will seem limited in the years to come as watches are as well connected as any computer is today.
