While it is rather pricey this new version of Vulcain's Cricket Anniversary Heart Automatic calendar watch is a lovey timepiece. Over the last few years their Anniversary Heart models have been stealing my attention. I like the design that is classic but still bold, as well as the emphasis on mechanics. I still feel that Vulcain makes the best mechanical alarm watches around.

One interesting benefit to a mechanical alarm such as this over an electronic one is the sound. While there are some notable exceptions, most electronic alarm watches have an anemic "beep, beep" to them. Vulcain's Cricket movements make loud buzzing noises and vibrate a bit. I really want to see electronic alarm watches do that as you'll certainly be aware that your reminder if going off. The Cricket movement's alarm also goes off for like 15-20 seconds. It all depends on how fully wound the alarm barrel is. That is sort of the down side - each time the alarm goes off, you need to wind it up again.

This new version of the Anniversary Heart watch comes in an 18k rose gold case that is 42mm wide and paired with an anthracite dial. There are sections of the dial that are partially translucent, allowing for a review of the date ring and the movement. The little bits of exposed mechanics in the center of the dial as well as the hints of skeletonization are interesting. The skeletonized dauphine hands are bold and partially lume filled. The watch looks both good for formal occasions and impressing watch nerds alike.

Inside the watch is the Vulcain manufactured Cricket V-22 movement. Cricket movements have been refined by Vulcain for something like 60 years now. Each Cricket movement has the time, and an alarm. This model also has the date, and features automatic winding. The rotor is anthracite gray coated and is mounted to the movement using ceramic ball bearings for winding efficiency. The case is water resistant to 50 meters. I wish it was more, but having any water resistance and being able to be loud is a difficult feat for any watch that is made to produce noises.

Overall a very nice watch, it is also very expensive. That isn't the case for all Vulcain watches, but this Ref. 220536.269L Anniversary Heart Automatic Calendar watch retails for a hefty $41,650.

Yup, this watch is called the "50s President's Watch." While that sounds a bit funny, let me explain. In 1953 Vulcain gave a Cricket Alarm watch to President Harry Truman. Since then they have given watches to all the US Presidents (yea, I know the issues about gifting things to the president, but there is some way around it... sorta). In honor of this tradition Vulcain created the 50s President's Watch, which has a retro design hearkening back to the originals.

The design is slick and actually feels very retro in your hand. Not in a "this watch is old" kinda watch, but more like "this watch has some charmingly retro design aspects to it." The bigger size (in context) gives the watch a sort of "larger than life" feel where traditional design elements are seemingly exaggerated. I almost want to call it a retro cartoon watch, but I don't think that will convey the feel the watch gives. It is a high-quality piece with a cool movement.

In the late 1940s Vulcain released their first Cricket Alarm watch movement. The mechanical caliber offered an alarm complication that was good. Good enough to wake you up. I have heard a lot of alarms complications in both quartz and mechanical watches. Most (not all) are crap. You can barely hear them, and many are a pain to use. Over the years Vulcain has refined the Cricket caliber, and it is among the best mechanical alarms on the market. Just a few years ago they released an automatic version of the Cricket. Just such a movement is contained inside of all the 50s President's Watches. It is the Vulcain Cricket Calibre V-21.

The good looking movement is a larger caliber with two barrels. Once I believe is used for the alarm. Winding the crown one way winds the barrel for the time and winding it the other way winds the alarm barrel. The alarm is set with the crown and activated with the pusher above the crown. The dial has a dedicated alarm hand. The alarm is loud and sounds like a crazy mechanical toy going off. It lasts for a full 20 seconds which is longer than it sounds.

Apparently designing the Cricket caliber to be an automatic was a challenge. I believe that has a lot to do with the alarm function, but Vulcain did it very successfully. One things about the movement that I don't quite understand is its relative slow rate of 18,000 bph. It has a power reserve of 42 hours.

The 50s President's Watch is 42mm wide but feels larger. It comes with a steel or 18k rose gold case and there are currently five models. I love the retro looking domed dials and sunburst polished faces. For a traditional styled watch this piece is still quite masculine. The hands and applied hour markers are strong looking and the neat integration between the alligator strap and the case is appreciated. There is an additional sense of strength in the texture engraved into the side of the crown. Like an old acrylic crystal, the sapphire is domed. To match the style of the Vulcain "V" logo, there is a metal section through the sapphire display caseback of the same shape.

Water resistance for the case is 50 meters. Acceptable in a watch like this as the alarm noise actually needs to travel from the movement through the case. Trust me, water resistance and watches that are meant to emit sound do not play well together for the most part. I am quite impressed with how Vulcain mixes these two needs.

The down side to mechanical alarms are two-fold. First, you need to wind them back up each time the alarm goes off. Second, you cannot set them precisely to the minute. As you can see, you more or less try to line the hand up as close as possible to when you wan it to go off, but it isn't perfect. Sadly... so sadly, there no snooze function. However for most little daily things you need reminders for, alarms like this work just fine and Vulcain makes among the best of them. Price for the steel models is 8,370 Swiss Francs while the 18k rose gold pieces are 22,680 Swiss Francs.

One of my favorite under represented Swiss watch brands is Vulcain. I have written about them before, for example here when I discussed how the brand gives one of their watches to each new US president (specifically it was for Obama). That watch happened to be Vulcain's new Anniversary Heart watch which is pictured here. Isn't it nice?

Vulcain watches are really rare. I believe there are some authorized dealers in the US, but I haven't been to any of them. I got to check out these watches at L'Heure Asch in Geneva. Denis Asch, the proprietor of the shop is probably the most respected independent watch dealer in Geneva. He has pretty good taste, and Vulcain is among the select brands that he carries. Actually, I found that Geneva isn't really a hot-spot for independent or smaller brands. The city is dominated by brands from mostly the Swatch Group, Richemont Group, and select high-end brands (like Audemars Piguet or Patek Philippe). Those looking for interesting stuff that is less common don't have that many choices. L'Heure Asch is actually in an interest spot, located right in Geneva's "old city" with many medieval aged buildings.

Vulcain watches I believe feature all in-house movements. The brand is most well known for their "Cricket" movement which has a mechanical alarm. They recently began to offer alarm movements with automatic winding features - apparently a tough feat for a mechanical alarm watch. Using the complication takes some education, but is simple once you get the hang of it, let's just say that for me it wasn't totally intuitive. The main crown is used for setting the time and winding. When the crown is pushed in all the way, you can turn the crown to wind the watch. Only there are two barrels in the watch that aren't linked. One mainspring barrel is for the time, and another is for the alarm. So when you turn the crown clockwise you wind one barrel, and when you turn it counter-clockwise, you wind the alarm barrel. There is a separate pusher to adjust the date.

There is no real way to set the alarm "on" or "off." If there is power in the alarm barrel, it will operate. But the power in the barrel lasts for just alarm sounding event. You then need to rewind it for the next alarm sound. Setting the alarm involve pressing a pusher above the crown. This then pushes the crown up, and when you operate it, it adjusts the alarm hand, not the time. You'll need to set the alarm to the 24 hour scale. The sound of the alarm is pretty impressive for a mechanical movement. Being used to sound beeps from a digital watch, the alarm offers a totally different noise. If you are in a loud place you might not hear the alarm, but it is loud enough for most instances. Clearly, people who rely on alarms are going to go with the consistency and precision of the digital alarm that can be set to the minute, and perhaps a few times a day. In a mechanical watch, the alarm is fun complication that you'll not likely need to use all the time. Vulcain has it pretty good though, and their Cricket movements became very useful for travelers before digital watches were available.

I am not going to go into detail on any of these watches. I simply wanted to discuss my impressions over all. Again, if you want more information these are the Vulcain Anniversary Heart, Cricket Xtreme, and Cloissone. The Anniversary Heart is a gorgeous watch and a solid value around $6,000 (in steel) I believe.  The watch comes in a few varieties, in gold or steel cases, and there are manually wound or automatic movement versions. At 42mm wide with a fluted side, the polished case is really well made, and a great size. Here, the dagger style hands in blued steel are just lovely, and the partially skeletonized dial not only retains legibility but shows off the decorated movement below. Vulcain does a solid job design movements in a unique manner, and they aren't too bad in the decoration department either.

The Cricket Xtreme is a really cool looking watch. It has a fun, masculine design with a dive watch feel. There is also another model called the Cricket Diver Xtreme. The names are silly, but the watches are cool. I first wrote about the Cricket Xtreme collection here. What is weird is that both models are water resistant to 100 meters only. Most people consider true dive watches to be at least 300 meters water resistant. Part of that might have to do with the ability for the alarm to sound. The Xtreme has a double caseback, meaning there is a hollow section between the two backs for sound to travel and reverberate. This collection also comes in a few styles, and have 44mm wide cases that are done in both steel and titanium (at the same time). I believe the Xtreme collection watches cost around $10,000.

Last is an example of Vulcain's more elegant enamel dial collection watches, called the Cloisonne (for the type of enamel application). This is the Tiger model, and features a hand-made enamel dial (which takes about 20 hours to make I believe). These watches have Cricket alarm movements and world time bezels. I believe that each has a 18k pink or white gold case (at least this Tiger model does), and come in 42mm wide cases. In this instances, the dial is first guilloche machine engraved (for the texture), and then the enamel painting is applied. I got to check out the dial with a loupe (magnifier), and enjoyed the detail and precision of the painting. Given the special enamel dials and the gold cases, these Cloisonne watches are likely rather expensive.

Thankfully L'Heure Asch has a wide selection of Vulcain watches so I got to check a number of them. The watches are quite nice, well designed, and certainly unique having high quality with prices that aren't too bad compared to some of their Swiss neighbors. If you need a mechanical alarm watch (or just like the idea of them), the Vulcain Cricket movement is a good option - especially being exclusive to the brand.

I didn't have the nicest things to say about the last Vulcain Diver X-Treme watch that I talked about. I mean, I liked how the watch looked, but seriously doubted how "extreme" it was. That has pretty much all changed with this new Vulcain Diver X-Treme Limited Edition watch, that blows me out of the... water. Really I love not only the looks of this watch but the honestly extreme amount of engineering that went into it. If you like luxury dive watches and want something from a more interesting watch company, this is a strong contender for your attention.

One of the things I talked about with the other Vulcain Diver X-Treme regarded the alarm. Well I am not sure if enhancements have been made or  Vulcain is simply discussing it more openly, but the case of the new Automatic limited edition X-Treme is specially made in a few layers of metal to help enhance the sound of the alarm specifically so that it can be heard underwater. Basically they claim that the three layers of steel and titanium make it possible to hear the alarm underwater down to 100 meters. Not sure if there is a difference in acoustics in the water at 100 meters or 10 meters, but it s a pretty good thing to know about a diving watch with an alarm. Remember to SURFACE!

The movement providing the alarm is the new automatic Vulcain Cricket v-21. Special about this movement is that it is an automatic. You have to realize that this was probably a difficult task given the fact that the rotor might function to dampen the sounds of the alarm acoustics. I find that all good diver's watches should be automatics and that a manually-wound diver's watch these days is not really suited for "extreme" labeling. So good things this limited edition is an automatic, while the previous version was not. The movement also is adjusted in a different way than you are used to. The crown on the right side of the case is used for setting the time and the alarm. There is a pusher above it that you depress to make the same crown be used for setting the alarm versus setting the time. To adjust the date, there is a pusher on the left side of the case with a little safety clasp over it labeled "date." The clasp is there to make sure that you don't accidentally adjust the date when you are not supposed to, and Vulcain was clever to label it as the date pusher as that is not its obvious use. As for the alarm, when operating it last for about 15-20 seconds. Not sure why the time various, but it probably has to do with what time the alarm is set to go off at and the internal mechanics of the movement.

The dial of the Diver X-Treme Automatic is very luxurious looking. Nicely applied hour markers in various colors (especially those metallic blue ones on the lighter dial color). The hands are large and clear. There is a nicely sloped chapter ring with the minutes on it and there are no superfluous markers on the dial even though there is a lot going on - a good mix between style and function. The hour markers and hands are further applied with SuperLumiNova as luminant which is good. I really like how the date window was inserted to make it look like part of the 6 o'clock hour marker - pretty smooth. Overall the dial is what I could expect from a quality diver watch costing in excess of $8,000.

A lot of the appeal comes from the good looking case. It is 44mm wide, 54mm tall, and a massive 18.4mm thick! Awesome. The case is make out of two metals. Mixing steel or 18k rose gold with titanium. Each of the model styles looks good, and I believe there are a few more than are pictured. On the top is the marketing photo of the watch from Vulcain, and the rest of the watch shots are taken of the actual models by Ernie Romers over at WatchUSeek.com while he was at Basel. I like that the timepieces look good in reality as well as mere concept. The only non extreme feature of the watch is that it is not not an uber-rugged diver only having 100 meter of water resistance. That is probably OK though, because if you were to actually do diving with it - you could subject it to light depths and such with no problems. Last, the watch is matched to a cool looking rubber diver's strap or calf leather strap - both with matching folding deployments. As cool as this watch is, it will likely be pricey. Retail is probably over $10,000. Plus it will only be limited to 150 pieces. Going to be a fascinating collectors watch and an overall nice diver from Swiss Vulcain.

I wanted to go over the new Vulcain Anniversary Heart Cricket watch that was given to President Barack Obama once again. I have discussed the watch on Luxist.com, and in other places as well. You should know that Vulcain has been giving new US Presidents watches for over 50 years. It is part of the Cricket watch heritage and started with Truman. He liked the Cricket watches from Vulcain because they not only had an alarm, but one that would actually wake him up. I can't say without a doubt (cause I don't know them all) that the Vulcain Cricket alarm movements are the "best" mechanical alarm watches out there, but you probably won't be disappointed in you get one cause you want a mechanical watch with an alarm function.

It also makes fantastic marketing sense for Cricket watches to be presented to Presidents by Vulcain. Talk about effective and easy marketing. What a sell that is if you know a few world leaders are wearing the same watch. It is certainly a step up in value from the Jorg Gray 6500 watch that Obama currently wears. The fact that he wears that watch shot Jorg Gray into the stratosphere of success. I don't think the same will happen to Vulcain - even if everyone knows about it. I don't know that Obama has even been seen wearing the watch as is the fact with the Jorg Gray, maybe once his second term in office comes he will switch it up a bit with the watches. The Jorg Gray watch means a lot. Mostly because it is a simple piece that most people can afford and relate to. That is not the fact with the Vulcain Cricket Anniversary Heart watch that doesn't go for lower than about $6,500.  From $300 to $6,500 (or more) is not an easy move for most people. So Vulcain has the tough task of convincing the more well-off segment that a luxury watch a President owns (and maybe doesn't wear) is a good personal investment. But you know what... at least here in America... Vulcain doesn't market at all. Not even a magazine ad. It would catch attention having a statement like "What can you and the President have in common? This fancy Vulcain watch!" No, they don't do that, and I have a feeling they haven't done things like that since the vintage French ad you see before you. Way to throw away a half-way decent marketing pitch Vulcain. I once visited a watch shop in Germany that sold Vulcain watches. They also sold like antique clocks that didn't seem to work. Those were much more prominently displayed than the Vulcain watches that sat in the back collecting dust. All I am saying is that Vulcain spent 50 years creating this well mannered trend, only to waste it in current times by not sharing it with potential American buyers (and others it seems).

The Anniversary Heart watch is actually a really fine timepiece. It uses a manually wound Cricket calibre movement, employs some nice dial skeletonization, and has a really handsome look to it. Even the movement in the rear of the steel watch looks beautiful. The company does make some beautiful timepieces that are of a high quality, and in the scheme of Swiss watches... they aren't THAT expensive. Still, I would venture to say that most of you haven't even heard of Vulcain - a sad fact. Which goes back to one of my truisms about watch companies; "watch makers make good watches, and are inept at pretty much everything else" (including marketing and customer outreach). Like when they spend a lot of money to sponsor some event that 50 people will show up at, when they could instead spend that money on getting thousands of people information about their watches.

So does Mr. Obama like his Vulcain Anniversary Heart watch? I'd like to think so. I don't know when he will wear it. In fact I would bet that like many of you, he's never even heard of the company until he got the watch. Oh, and I don't want to hear anything about "it is not legal for him to accept gifts" There are loopholes to that, and I am sure that after doing this for 50 years, Vulcain has found out about them.

I find the little engravings to Obama on the watch cute. I like them a lot, and they add as much character to this watch as they do to the Jorg Gray 6500 Barack Obama edition watch. Just so you know, the mainstream Anniversary Heat watch does not have the Obama message engravings, just the one for President Obama.

Years from now when historians are going over this era and Obamaphanelia (just made the term up, please start spreading it around) is popular, I think this will be a year nice collector's item. If it even leaves the Obama clan that is. The point of all this semi-intelligible blogging is that Vulcain did a nice job with the Anniversary Heart watch, Obama should enjoy it and wear it on occasion, and that Vulcain should do a much better job taking advantage of this obvious marketing opportunity - especially in the US. Oh, and people should know that while he might not wear it, the President does have at least one luxury watch at his disposal.

I would imagine that the typical watch consumer is intelligent. At least understanding words and meaning. What do you think of when you hear "extreme" or the even more extreme iteration of extreme, "xtreme?" Well I think about objects that takes a beating, and do so while functioning well. Not fancy gold watches with mechanical alarms. So while I really like the Vulcain Cricket Diver X-Treme (go ahead, picture extreme diving crickets, it is the logical thing to do), I think Vulcain's marketing team needs to hit the showers.

Vulcain has been around a while, and are most known for their Cricket watches, and V-10 mechanical alarm movement. Which apparently has a very audible mechanical alarm. While an alarm may seem a simple complication, getting a good sound out of a mechanical movement is tough. Most of us are used to beeping Casio watches. While an alarm is very useful to some people, Vulcain makes some far fetched claims about the audibility of the alarm underwater. Really Vulcain? You expect a diver in full suit to hear this alarm during a dive? Really? Still, the alarm is said to last for 15-20 seconds. If it is loud enough to be heard underwater, I would not want to be the guy whose Vulcain Cricket goes off in a meeting (oh, now I get the Cricket name!). The alarm itself seems simple to set (using the center alarm time ring), but not particularly accurate. Seems like you can get withing a 2-3 minute range of when you want it to go off. The watch is rated for 100 meters. Clearly not extreme. While this rating is ok for light swimming and snorkeling, this is not the rating needed for a serious dive watch. Further, the watch is not an automatic, but manually wound. Hardly extreme. Hardly, Vulcain...

Removing the "X-Treme" moniker, and you have a beautiful watch. Attractive symmetry with classic elements, and orbiting numbers, you have a great looking watch. Modernly useful, with contrasting colors that really bring the colors out. Four screws on the dial add to a more mechanical feel, and the quasi-tire tread rubber strap is a nice touch.
