Where can I get a bag like that? Tell me those are for sale. In a move that is about as opposite as it gets from the Swiss mentality to selling timepieces, KenmarWatches.com and affiliated WatchWear.com is using a new type of sales tactic to bring you their deep discounts. ShopNBC's television network suddenly has some serious competition. Watch out Jim Skelton, you've got some competition. The "Unknown Watch Salesman" as KenmarWatches is labeling him, feels like a distant cousin of Jack, from Jack in the Box. Though instead of hawking bacon burgers, This masked crusader will be sharing with you America's greatest pastime - high pressure, high energy sales tactics. And this time it might go viral.

Yea, it is funny, and it is supposed to be. Guys like us though, can sort of see right through sales presentations like this. Such as remarking on how the sale price of $99 is so much lower than the published $425 price on the watch box. We all know that MSRP prices on watch boxes are basically a starting point for discounts. I don't think anyone has ever bought a watch at the price printed on the box or label. The point of these videos is to draw attention to KenmarWatches and inject some humor into an industry were laughing is strictly forbidden! Exactly why is he wearing latex gloves?

Oprah Endorses Ugly Tocs Watches

Maybe I cannot actually say that Oprah herself endorses ugly watches, in all likelihood Oprah has probably never even seen one of these watches. Regardless, her name and image is plastered all over the materials saying that her enterprise endorses these watches. So thus, it is enough for me to say that she herself does in fact endorse these fiendish creations with all her heat. Don't put your name (or allow it to be put) next to something you won't stand by.

O, The Oprah Magazine presented its recommendation last month of Tocs watches as part of a story on "the best gifts under $50." It is a line of not so attractive (in my opinion) women's watches that aren't even worth their budget pricing. You also have to check out the Tocs company logo which is laughable. About four minutes on Microsoft Word playing around with the Comic Sans font could have produced something nicer looking.

The watches are perfect for children. Not really for adults. They are much more than likely Chinese made (which are known for some good watches, and some very not good watches) with clear plastic cases, and plastic straps. Oh, and they are colorful, yes that have THAT going for them. The movements are all quartz, with a totally analog, analog and digital, and totally digital movement options. The tonneau shaped cases and those with numeral scattered faces are attempts to remind the likely buyers of watches they have probably never seen before, Franck Muller watches. One of the analog watches humorously has a plastic bezel designed off of a Audemars Piguet Royal Oak watch bezel. There you are going from at least $10,000 to $50. That was funny/cute. It really makes me think of the person staring at these watches online or in a showcase (they are at Bloomingdale's!) who might like the design, having no idea what sources such looks originated, and that Tocs is simple borrowing design accents.

I mentioned that the Tocs watches are perfect for kids. Yea, because they aren't going to stand up to a beating, don't even remotely look professional, and have that kid Crayola kinda look. I can say that the Tocs watches come in a lot of colors, which is fine, considering the fact that plastic color choices have no limits really. There is nothing refined, or particularly endearing about these watches. It is possible that I am jaded being exposed to the highest end watches that exist, but I can appreciate a $20 Casio, and these Tocs watches just leave me blank faced.

The Oprah article used a term that is new for me, "recessionista." My interpretation of this term refers to the bad economy, and how new budget minded fashionistas are seeking out inexpensive ways to still remain fashionable. I heartily fall into this mindset, and never want to spend too much to look good. But honestly, are these good looking watches? They are exactly the type of things I'd expect to find at a 99 cents store. With prices between $45 - $65, the Tocs watches are probably cost about 2-3 bucks a pieces to manufacture. Like I said, some of these watches would be a thrill for a 12 year old. I can see myself gifting one of these to a grown woman, only to have a follow up question asked - inquiring when the Barbie doll to go with the watch would arrive.

You know what the real recessionista does? That person goes to eBay, because they know that for $50 one can get a lot, with about 25,000 choices alone for women's watches under $50. You can probably triple that number if you combine men's, women's, and unisex watches together that fall into that budget. In fact, you can probably get 5 watches on eBay for $50 that are nicer to look than any of these Tocs watches. If you don't believe me, take a look for yourself. Even Tocs watches can be found for under half retail on eBay.

You know Woot.com right? Its the popular deal-a-day website which offers just one very good deal a day. If you miss it, there is no going back. Well, countless Woot.com competitors have popped up, often focusing on some market niche. Here though, is the watch version, and it is very well done. ChronoShark.com (just launched in December 2008) is the place to go for a super daily watch deal. It was started by the people who do DiamondShark.com (I am sure you can guess the idea is there too).

Chronoshark.com is executed really well, and is a testament to simple online purchasing and good watch marketing. It is really simple, first you visit ChronoShark.com everyday to see the deal de jour. If you want, you can get e-mails from them, or get their deals via RSS. If you like what you see, you can view some technical information, a clear image of the watch, some relevant details about the watch, and most importantly you get some some comparison prices as to what the same watch model would cost on major retails elsewhere. The process is so smooth, and they really stress the "time is running out" feeling with the countdown clock ticking in real time.

The prices currently are really quite good. A draw back at this time is that the selection is limited to mainstream brands with high distribution. Chronoshark says the main brands offered right now are:Â Accutron, Bulova, Citizen, ESQ, Invicta, Movado, Seiko and Technomarine. Nothing wrong at all with these brands, but don't expect to see anything exotic or too extravagant here - this is your good deal site for your basic mainstream watches. Still, the potential range of models even from these few brands is really large, there are men's and women's watches that are available, and the deals can be just great (I've been watching what they offer over the last few days and can approve). A sick thing happens when you are involved with watches too much. You begin to anthropomorphize them to a degree; at least I do. Or in some instances the effect is less than anthropomorphism, but an animal-pomorphism. So I am treating this watch like a dog in need of a home. Only the watch will live a lot longer! And does not shed.

Credor is Seiko's ultra high end brand. They even have a $70,000 watch that I will discuss in the next few days. That's right $70,000 for a Seiko. Seiko's Spring Drive movement found its way into a few Credor watches, with this ref. GCLL997 Moonphase watch being a prime example. Style is similar but distinctly different than that of the Grand Seiko or Seiko Spring Drive watches that typically contain the movement. Further, Credor watches have never, and will probably never see American soil. At least from an official distribution standpoint.

So right now, straight outta Hong Kong comes this splendid number that needs your love. That's right folks, this immaculately made high end Japanese watch is looking for a new owner, that could be you. If you've never had the opportunity to experience a high end Japanese watch, they are very different from their European counterparts. For example, to get the fit and finish you see on Japanese high end watches, you'd need to spend roughly 3-4 times (and up) for a comparably finished European watch in most instances. Look at the images of the Credor closely and tell me you aren't impressed by the details.

There is something very "Eastern" in the design of the GCLL997. Some of it looks Middle Eastern to me, while other parts are pretty distinctly Japanese. The Credor logo almost looks Arabic, which is kinda cool. While it is hard to tell from the photographs, the dial is extremely well finished with a lot of texturing applied faceted markers, and materials that give off the richest of feelings. The case itself is a thankfully large for Asian watches at 43mm wide. None of this 35mm nonsense. And inside is of course a Seiko Spring drive movement. Functions include the time, moonphase, and a power reserve indicator.

The original price for this watch was over $6,000. The one needing a home on eBay is about $4,200, but you can make an offer on it. I suggest offering about $3,400, and then agreeing to $3,600 if there is a back and forth over price. Oh, and don't miss the mirror finish on the steel around the bezel; it is stunning.

Hideous Melding Of Mobile Phone, Mechanical Watches, And Painful Design: The Mobiado Professional 105GMT Gold Discovery Phone

What do you get when you try too hard to make a luxury mobile phone that stands out? In fact, what do you get when you try too hard to make just a luxury mobile phone? Most of the time it is some hideous creation that excels at delivering a sub par technological device in an expensive skin. So if you want to spend big bucks on a luxury phone, you can have a device that is probably antiquated before it reaches market, and is covered in gems, gold, and other gaudy looking essentials. The message no one seems to be getting is that mobile phones are mostly a commodity because technological changes and advancements require an upgrade every 12-24 months. Stick luxury watches, those can last for generations - literally.

Still, there are a slew of "successful" luxury phones out there. Vertu is one of them, as well as the Tag Heuer Meridist. There are also Nokia's line of "fashionable" phones that come with hefty style premiums. These phones do well in limited markets, especially among those are are more interested in phones being fashion icons rather than productivity tools. As such, a luxury phone needs to look nice, and be nice to the touch. The materials it uses are important, but overall it is the user experience that is key to pushing a product.

The shortcoming of most luxury phones is that they use very complex and expensive materials. The rationale? The expensive watch market puts a premium both in price and prestige on use of exotic materials. Because it works there, and presumably there is a market overlap between luxury watch buyers and luxury phone buyers, it seems like a good idea to use exotic and very expensive materials on luxury phones. The reason this unwise, is that it dramatically increases the price, does not seem to be valued much by mobile phone consumers, and is placed on an item with a very limited useful life. Like I said, nice watch can literally last you generations. A luxury phone will last maybe a few years max. Thus, it makes more sense to spend a lot on a luxury watch than phone.

So the subject of this discussion is the Professional 105GMT Gold Discovery phone from Russian based luxury phone maker Mobiado. Funny enough, I hear that their phones aren't even sold in Russia. Further, I have no idea exactly what is supposed to be professional about this? Mobiado seems to have a mission to take a bunch of fancy materials and make a phone out of them. While they have succeeded in this, the sum of the parts is seemingly cheaper than the parts individually. So I'll talk about the good aspects of the phone first; the bad aspects should be obvious.

The gold you see on the case is gold plated (base is brass). The case is also offered in a gun metal version (screws are gun metal too), which is just specially treated steel. The dark parts of the case are Ebony wood with thin layers of synthetic sapphire crystal over them. This is the same type of sapphire crystal used on watch faces. It is very strong and doesn't scratch, and probably forces the phone to weight a lot. There are also diamonds around the watch faces. They aren't particularly well placed, but they are real diamonds. Though I do get a distinct low-end blingy feel from this phone.

The phone is also a "world phone," and pretty flexible. With quad-band GSM and WCDMA (world CDMA), this phone should work on just about every network or carrier; great so that you can appear in absolute fashion disarray from the cities of Africa to the suburbs of Korea. This item represents one of the few hybrid GSM/CDMA phones out there, and you'll certainly be paying for it...in money and dignity. The phone also has 3G connection. Otherwise the operating system seems to be some Symbian derivative. Nokia's Symbian OS is a really functional and flexible OS, but the version in this phone just seems totally outdated from a UI standpoint. Further, the mediocre small screen (two inches) is probably not the best to look at, but adequate. Inside it has enough stuff to offer decent functionality. Nothing better than a decent free phone from your local carrier.

You then have the oddly incorporated watches. Two automatic mechanical Swiss watch movements are in a section at the bottom of the phone. I don't even think the phone will get enough movement in your pocket to keep the movements wound. Why are these there? Mobiado says to add two time zones, but really it was just something to add. The mechanical movements are likely ETA 2824-2 movements, or something of the sort. Beyond being gold plated (or simply gold toned), they are not decorated at all really. The faces are skeletonized, which in this case just mean there is no dial. The hands are pretty boring, nothing special, and the placement of the diamond hour markers feels awkward. This is not a watch lover's timepiece-phone. Between the two watch faces is an "M" shaped diamond cluster. This is backlit when the keyboard lights up. The keyboard itself features those tiny keys that everyone hates to press. Nothing comfortable there.

You can go to www.Mobiado.com if you want to learn more about the technical details. My feelings are that the Professional 105GMT Gold phone is pretty hideous looking. For lack of a better term, there simply is no design. The elements are just thrown together symmetrically. This phone is in all senses, as ugly at the large brick cellulars phones from the late 1980s, just with a different look. It isn't ergonomic, it doesn't offer anything special in terms of technology, and once the tech life is out dated, you simply have an expensive paper weight. The company offers other ugly models, but this model wins for being the most hideous. For these reasons I am giving this item the aBlogtoRead.com Bad Idea Award. Price? At least $5,000.
