Citizen Eco-Drive Chrono Time AT Watches

Citizen Chrono Time AT BY0000 56E Citizen Eco Drive Chrono Time AT Watches

Functions! Functions! Functions! This is the newer line of Citizen Eco-Drive Chrono Time AT watches. Pictured are two of the models with the all steel version up top, and the limited edition gold-plated version below. Though other models are available.  Breitling proved to the world that men like busy dials. With the advent of the Breitling slide-rule rotating dial, very world of busy pilot watches was born. I have yet to meet people who actually use the slide rule bezel, but they do succeed in making the wearer look more important. This isn't the first Citizen watch with a slide rule, but it may be of the nicest. One thing different about this Citizen Chrono Time At watch compared to a Breitling, is that the Citizen has many more functions.

To get an idea of what they are all, see the little diagram with arrows showing what areas on the watch are meant to indicate. I am sure that simply looking at the dial didn't have you thinking it did all that. At first I assumed that it had the time, which was atomic clock based, picking up the radio signals, that it had a chronograph, a 24 hour hand, the inner rotating slide rule bezel, date, and was a world timer. Then you begin to notice other features that are less obvious. Just as a battery charge indicator for the light powered Eco-Drive quartz movement, alarm, a system for telling you whether you are in day light savings time, an indicator telling you what atomic clock radio signal you are picking up, as well as more information about the radio signals, that the watch is a perpetual calendar, oh, and that the watch kick's ass.

The watches are big, being 46mm wide, but don't feel as big on your wrist. Crystal is thankfully sapphire. The colors on the dial look nice, but not silly looking. The hands do stand out enough, so the watch isn't too difficult to read. One thing you'll notice is the large flatter crown. It has a nice inlaid Citizen Promaster logo in it. Most of the functions need to be read about to be used, but once you learn how to use the watch, it isn't that complex. When you have the nice looking timepiece on your wrist, it is nice to know that it never needs a battery replacement, and doesn't need to be set because it is atomic clock controlled. That and the easy to use world-timer function make it a perfect travel watch, or everyday watch. Plus the watch is sophisticated enough to keep you interested in it for a while.

I like the steel version with the metal bracelet the best, but you can get the watch with leather straps (blue or black dials). Prices for those are $650-$750 retail, while the limited edition (of 2,50 pieces) version is gold plated and on a crocodile strap, that goes for $895 (not too bad for a limited edition over the standard watches).

The crystals (whether sapphire or mineral) are also all domed and anti-reflective.

The only crystal that's sapphire is that of the limited gold-plated edition.

The alarm is probably the loudest I've ever heard on a watch -- louder than Omega's X-33.

I have the black dial with the white ring, in all stainless steel. An absolute beauty.

Best,
Johnny

I bought the limited edition watch for less than $600 in the Caymans this past march. Love the watch -the look, the accuracy and the never needing to wind or replace a battery.

In fact, I have put my 25 year old rolex oyster watch into storage because of the look and accuracy of this watch.

Ariel and Charles, thanks for the answers regarding the crystal. i did some more checking, seems the US version will be mineral whereas the titanium version available in Australia will have sapphire. i was really hoping that the sapphire would be available here in the US.
thanks again

Thanks Ariel! I missed the indicators for setting the alarm. The hands probably swing to alarm mode, with the second hand showing ALM, ON, or OFF. I've seen this on other watches by Citizen.

Re: crystal - I can confirm that my older AT (the one that came out just before this one) has a mineral, not saphire crystal. I know this due to the chips and scratches on it (I'm rough with my watches). The new one might be different.

Mr. Adams, i really like this watch and am very inclined to purchase one. I have been looking at online shops but have found that most claim that the model BY0000-56E available here in the US has mineral crystal. can you confirm this?

Hi there,
It is possible that only the limited edition version has a sapphire crystal - this was specifically indicated to me by Citizen, but they were unclear about the standard version. Apologies for the confusion.

Mr. Adams noted in his text that there is an alarm. However, I do not see any indications
that one exists. Either it was an oversight,
or there just was not a viable way to incor-
porate into the already crowded complication.

I use my slide rule scale constantly! Mostly for conversion - Miles to kilometers, different currency rates, cost of something when it's given per square foot. It's especially useful on a watch when you're travelling to a country with different currency, because you can set the rate once, and (unless it slips) you've always got a currency conversion table on your wrist.

I have the last version of the AT. I have to say this one looks even better, because they've removed the LCD panels and instead added a rotating ring for the world time. But does this one have an alarm? That would be quite important, since this seems to me like a travel watch, and I never travel without an alarm on my watch...

Hi Charles,
The literature I got from Citizen clearly mentions that the watch has an alarm. I admittedly did not use the alarm (nor did I look for it when I played with the watch). It is possible (though unlikely that only the limited edition has an alarm). This could be a typo from Citizen, but I was telling it like they told me.
I think it was not a typo though. If you look under the minute hand of the watch you can see "ALM," plus "ON" and "OFF." These look like indicators for setting the alarm. So I am betting that the watches do in fact have them.

  2. [...] Priced at $650 with a leather strap or $750 with a metal band (the crocodile strap above is a limited edition piece that costs $895) this is the watch I would recommend for anyone who wants a serious timepiece that costs under $1000. You can see all of the features on the diagram above but for under $900 you’re getting a watch that is atomic clock based and picks up radio signals, a perpetual calender, a battery charge indicator (the watch is powered by light by the way)  an alarm and much much more. It’s hard to do better than this for under a grand, you could pick up a Tag or a Movado (which I personally hate) but none of them will have the functionality of this beautiful watch.
