Formex is one of those brands I love to notice, but doesn't seem to get the public attention it deserves. Which is a shame given how nice some of their watches are. The mantra of Formex seems to be a melding of watch and race car technology. As such, the signature tech feature that is unique to Formex and found in each of their watches is a patented shock absorption system (they call it a suspension system). It is really simple actually, and nifty. The watch case itself is attached via a vertically gliding fastener to a plate. The plate contains the lugs to which the bracelet is attached. In the event of shock, the watch case is able to independently move a little bit up and down. It's just a cool little system to have.

The design of the watch is a combination of tool shed tech and traditional diver watch. From a distance the appearance of the DS 2000 GMT is of a strong looking diving watch. Upon closer inspection you realize all the little features that make the Formex unique. The full titanium case and bracelet have steel accents, such as the screws and bolts that give it a more precision look; as though it experienced a deeper level of engineering. And of course, the titanium makes the watch very light, even for its relatively hefty side of 45mm wide size. Formex is really dedicated to the user. As you can see the watch packaging. You get a wealth of tools, and straps in a case that can be taken with you on adventures. The Allen bolt fastener on the lugs makes it easy to change straps quickly and without any frustration; of course a tool is included for this. Also, there is a unique multi-locking clasp on the bracelet that is very secure. Look at the rotating diver's and its grippy looking surfaces. The contrasting colors make it easy to read, and the thickness makes it easy to operate even with gloves on. Overall, it is just a very ergonomic watch, which adds to it's tool like demeanor.

You'll be spending most of your time looking at the dial of the Formex 4 Speed DS 2000 GMT if you are one of its proud owners. The dial and rear window are each covered with sapphire glass, which is to be expected, and I'd be pissed if it was anything less. In either the white, blue, or black faced models, the square patterned background on the dial is pleasant and surprisingly satisfying. I've always been fond of the hand design on Formex watches, and these model's don't disappoint. The GMT hand is tipped in bright red and very easy to read. There is a distinct difference between the minute and hour hand, which drastically aids in legibility. This is totally aided by the clear data layout of the dial. Lume covers the important areas of the face, allowing for a fair amount of night viewing. In the end, there is little to disagree with on the dial, or the watch overall. The Formex DS 2000 is simply a very satisfying and successful design.

abtrcom good value2 Formex 4 Speed DS 2000 GMT Watch Perfect For Diving Or RacingPowering the watch is an automatic Swiss ETA 2893-2 viewable through the case back. The movement is not particularly decorated in this case, but it is not necessary in this application. The 2893-2 movement is the preferred movement when a GMT complication is needed. The GMT (24 hour) hand can be independently adjusted to act as a second timezone. In this watch, the crown is placed at the top of the watch to prevent damage to the watch crown, and from uncomfortably jabbing into the wearer's wrist; a nice touch.

The price of the Formex DS 2000 GMT is often under $2,000 which makes it an excellent value for what you get; a great, functional design, solid high-quality case, and lots of extras make this watch a recipient of aBlogtoRead.com's Good Value Award. You'll find few watches that offer this much, for around the same price - in my opinion. It is not just the watch and movement inside, but the enhanced level of engineering and unique approach to watch making that you get with a Formex that makes this watch a choice pick.

I've been tracking this watch for a while now, finally bought one. I thank heaven for this watch. Formex DS2000 GMT is the best watch out there for its value. Considering all its attributes. It all started back in 2005 when I first saw this watch along side the Breitling Super Avenger(BSA). Of course, I went with my gut feeling and bought the BSA, it was great! The watch exploded in popularity. But, 6 months later I sold it, lol.
Bottom line, the Formex DS2000 GMT compares to the BSA or maybe succeed it to a degree, depending how you look at value. BSA retails for $3999 or more and the FormexDS2000 GMT is only $1950 or less. Just a thought guys!

Thanks for the thoughts Paul. Glad you like it too. I think Formex makes some really good watches that aren't quite well-known enough.

Ariel,

I´m really digging this watch and have come across one in good shape, however it seems to be a huge watch! I cannot find the lug to lug distance on this watch or the thickness of the case, by any chance do you have these?

Best

Hi Andres,
The watch shouldn't be super huge. I am sure that information is available online somewhere. You can't go wrong with that design!

Noah,

I was curious about the "patented suspension", too. (I'm a patent lawyer, so that language usually gets my attention!)

I did some research and it is a very interesting design. Think of the case of the watch as two parts. The first part is the movement, the dial and the bezel. The second part is the outer case that holds the first part and connects to the bracelet. The outer case is actually more like a ring-shaped piece that the first part can move through.

The suspension is actually between that first part and the second part. In other words, the dial/movement/crystal/bezel part moves independently from the outer ring of the case.

If you see a side view of the watch, it is a little clearer. Rather than having the crown extend through a simple hole in the side of the case, the case has a U-shaped portion that the crown sits in so that the crown can move independently from the case.

I would also imagine that the use of titanium is important for weight saving. Because of the two-part design, the watch almost has two separate cases. If they were both made out of steel, it would be one hefty watch.

Since a picture is almost always better than words (and a video of the suspension in action even better than that, here is a link to the Formex website that shows how the suspension moves:

http://www.formexwatch.ch/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=12&Itemid=26

The only question I would have is how quickly that suspension can react. It seems like the wrist would counteract some of the movement available, but regardless, I'm sure it is better than not having the suspension at all.

All in all, it is a nice looking watch, and I really like the blue model.

Hi Brian,
Thanks for the in-depth comment! Really helpful. The video tells some of the story and I think a lot of what we are talking about it correct. Take care!

Ariel - Can you discuss this "suspension system" a little further in terms of what it adds to the watches' wearability, comfort, weight and size?

The crown-on-top scheme is pretty groovy, along with the use of titanium. However, is the mix of steel and titanium defeating the purpose of how light the titanium is to begin with?

Personally, the thickness of this piece may detract from the draw of 40mm+. Is this a valid concern?

It seems with those extras and the general size, it may be quite a large watch, possibly too large for those of us who like to wear sport watches as everyday pieces.

Hey Noah,
So a few questions. Let's talk about size first. If you aren't used to a large watch, at first it might be odd, but you very quickly adapt to it. It is even hard to go back to smaller watches. I wear 42-45mm wide watches each day. So really, no worries there.

Titanium probably makes the watch a bit lighter and has other qualities as well, such as providing an aesthetic touch as well and being harder than steel. I am not the engineer who designed the Formex DS 2000 watch, but there is likely some other reason above mere cosmetic purposes that the metal is used in conjunction with steel. Plus, as is the case in auto racing, even a little weight savings is notable.

The shock absorption system can be though of as mainly a vibration absorption system - though it can protect against various style of shock. Image that you are doing something that involves a lot of vibrations to your hands (such as putting your hand on the wheel of a car going 180mph). These vibrations can effect the movement of a mechanical watch, even a quartz watch for that matter. There are plenty of other "vibration rich" activities where such a suspension system is useful. I don't think the watch is inordinately "tall" off the wrist as well. Hope that answered your questions a bit. Take care.

Between this and the recent Omega GMT chronograph, the new twists on GMT watches are really starting to become prominent. Keep them coming, it's looking like a trend!
