This was an important article for me to write as the concept of luxury Japanese watches has been on my mind a lot lately. I think you'll find it an interesting read. It rather well accumulates my dispersed thoughts on this topic of global sold Japanese luxury watches and our perception on them.

Great piece. I know something that I would like to see is a head to head comparison of the Japanese and Swiss movements. Everyone knows that ETA gives good value, but if the Japanese movements truly are superior, they could gain a lot of cred by directly targeting bread and butter movements like the 28XX and 7750.

I think (and hope) that people would respond to a lower-priced Spring Drive or higher-end Precisionist - in addition to pure mechanicals. I know I would.

Thanks for the great article!

The article on the "Lexus Effect" is great. I'm a collector and blogger of vintage Seiko watches. The Seiko brand has historically been associated with low to mid priced watches in the US. It has been difficult to distinguish their higher end products from their bread and butter models. Seiko has to talk about it rich heritage in watch making. I think there is a tendency to avoid dicussion of the WW2 period of their heritage for obvious reasons. Seikos rise in popularity in the US was primarilly driven by returning servicement who purchased the diver and business watches. They need to talk about that heritage. I sell lots of vintage Seikos to guys who want the watch that their dad wore or they received in high school. I don't think Seiko understands it's heritage in the US. SEIKO Credor, IZUL and GALANTE watches are beautiful work of art that anyone can appreciate. Seiko has to be proud enough to put these products into the world market.
