New Steel Rolex Submariner Watch For 2010

Rolex Submariner steel watch 41 New Steel Rolex Submariner Watch For 2010

The long awaited new steel version of the new generation of Rolex Submariner watches is here. The official name is the Rolex Oyster Perpetual Submariner Date. This is not a surprise release from the brand for 2010. However, the introduction of a standard green dial is something I didn't expect. Like clockwork, over the last few years Rolex has been updating their GMT Master II collection and then a white gold new Submariner. Last year the released a new two-tone (steel and gold) Submariner watch with a blue or a black dial. It was only logical that this year would see the release of a new all steel Submariner, ref. 116610. This is most important because the steel versions are the most popular - given their position as having the lowest cost version of one of the most popular timepieces on the planet (if not the most popular luxury watch on the planet).

The new watches have the same 40mm width, but a slightly different shape of case and a new "maxi dial." Like the other new Submariners and GMT Master II, the dial has larger hands and hour indicators. Plus the lume should glow blue. Another wonderful addition to the steel Submariners is the ceramic bezel. Rolex calls it "Cerachrom," and they do it probably better than anyone else. The ceramic has a beautiful tone and is very crisp looking. Compared to the ceramic bezel on the GMT Master II, the Submariner bezels are a more matte finished.

A broader case looks elegant as ever and still thin. Even though the Submariner is smaller at 40mm in size that most modern men's watches, it still holds it own quite well. A bold wrist look that you just can't beat. Don't forget that the case is water resistant to 300 meters in this "original" mainstream true diver's watch. The larger hands and indexes make the face easier to read and dare I say, more Rolexy. The case is not made of grade 316L steel, but rather the higher grade grade 904L steel that has all sorts of special chemical resistance abilities.

Green is a color that Rolex is known for using in special models. The release of a new mainstream Submariner model is a special occasion. It is a substantial tone that isn't too bright or dark. The dial is metallic, while Rolex calls "Green Gold." There is another reason for the green face - to help get existing Submariner buyers to get one. If you have a previous generation Submariner there isn't huge incentive to upgrade unless you are "that type of person." But with a new dial color, and potentially new personality, existing fans will see reason to add to their collection.

Thankfully we now have a Submariner with the famous Rolex Glide-Lock clasp. This gives the bracelet clasp a special micro-adjust ability that gives it a very precise fit. Plus, you can change the size as often as you like for tighter or looser days. Rolex isn't the first to have a special bracelet clasp like this, but they do it oh so well. Inside the watch is the same invincible 3135 automatic COSC Chronometer certified movement. Not much to say there, there are few better three-hand date movements out there. It is of course 100% made and designed by Rolex. Price for the new Submariner watches hasn't been released yet, but I suspect they will be almost identical to the outgoing models. Look for them in stores soon watch lovers. The new piece might not be a monumental upgrade, but that isn't watch Rolex does. They just keep making their good stuff better.

Why am I so much more in love with the steel/gold than I am with the much more popular steel??

Bought the new one in Greece. All SS with Black. This thing is about as perfect as a watch gets. The blue glow of the hands and hour markers is very nice but tends to fade fairly quickly. The cerachrom bezel is beautiful and very resistant. The pearl is slightly raised but feels very secure with the metal surround. Have had a minor issue with the bezal making slight turns when wearing a dress shirt. Nothing major though. The bracelet feels very firm and do not notice much flex which is nice. The glidelock feature is perfect as well. The better quality steel seems to be very wear resistance and has even taken a few wall nocks of various materials without a scratch. I like the new "anti-counterfeiting" markings as they are there but not overtly noticeable. I also like the placement of the serial number. There seems to be a slight bit of additional weight but again, not noticeable over the long haul. I have worn mine to swim, sleep, work and have no complaints. Price is higher than older models but well worth the new features and look. I would buy the same, in a heartbeat.

Very good feedback on the purchase. Thanks Josh.

Rolex have perfected the steel Submariner-date. I also would have liked to have seen minute markers all around the bezel. This made me add the Deepsea to my collection. The size of this watch is not that noticable once it has been worn for a day or two. It is the most interesting diver's watch on the planet and carries more writing than any watch produced hitherto. The dome crystal with its subtle distotion effect, adds to its noticablily without having to add yellow gold. The steel GMT completes the perfect collection for the man who likes action and style. However an evolved Explorer II may have to be added.

HA...... I dont know, these look terrific. I did see someone with the green one and it looked beautiful. I like the previous green as well.....but I think these are nicer somehow.......the bezel is really stunning in person.....but then Im a defender of Rolex (note the new Liam Neeson film Unknown features a Rolex in the plot line). Anyway, I still love the Explorers though......the plain black faced ones, mainly because I love the plain bezel. That said, this new green one is awfully pretty.

Nice, but I love two-tone!
Those steel-only things make me thing "boring" and no personal statement! I can't seem to be able to explain how people have an innate "want" to be different, and yet wear a watch EVERYONE is wearing! Wearing "the most recognizeable watch on the planet" is bifold.. you WANT people to recognize your Rolex Submariner (it being the most popular), and yet you're just like everybody else.
Beats me!

I would like to have seen minute markers on the bezel of the new ceramic, steel Submariner-Date. These would have exploited the striking quality of the new higher-spec' bezel and competed more favourably with the GMT bezel. The Deepsea has a very interesting dial.I wish they could make a thinner version of this case.

I quite like these new Submariners, the black face with the gold band looks very sharp.

Does anyone know if a "no date" version will be released for the new Submariner?

Yes, I know that it is possible to make the ceramic bezel in blue, but maybe not THE blue of the old Sub two-tone. The new blue just isn't as rich as the old blue. It's more flat, whereas the old blue almost sparkles.

I have the previous version in the stainless steel with the green bezel and the one that is two-tone with blue.

Although I like the idea of the ceramic bezel, I really prefer the shape of the old case, which is a lot sleeker with the tapered lugs, and fits my wrist perfectly. I don't mind the old bracelet at all. It's very comfortable and does the job nicely.

The blue on the two-tone is a much better color on both the dial and the bezel than on the new version (I guess that blue is not possible in the ceramic material). On the green one, I like the green bezel with the black dial a lot better than the new version with the green dial.

However, I still think the new versions are nice looking watches and I might consider a standard stainless with the black. It looks much better than the new Deep Sea, which is too bulky and actually looks a bit cheap, I think.

Thanks for the thoughts. Blue is possible in ceramic (any color is). Blue is used on a version of the two-tone Submariner as well as for the white gold version. The reason the steel one isn't in blue is because Rolex doesn't want people to confuse it with the all white gold version (that looks like steel from a few feet away anyways).

You're most welcome and thanks for accepting my thoughts. Happy Easter to you all.

Greetings to you all. I recently bought the two tone version - Gold&Steel, black dial and bezel. It feels much heavier than the previous editions. The bracelet and buckle are more solid and compact. The ceramic bezel is actually amazing, and the glide-lock system to the bracelet allows microadjustments in a matter of seconds. The anti-counterfeiting markings are quite discretely engraved and completely unobtrusive. The "pearl" on the rotating bezel is a bit elevated, but not in a way that it will be "caught" somewhere. Its actually luminous and quite bright (just like the markers and hands), unlike the previous. To notice it of course, one has to observe the watch from an angle. The full stainless steel version was presented for the first time in Basel this year, thus the time I got mine, only the two tone was available of the new Submariner. I wish I had waited a bit longer....

The only thing that I found a bit negative to this model (I have the previous version too), is the lugs. They are quite thicker than the previous one, which by the way I find a bit more elegant. The bracelet and buckle of course have no comparison to the new model. I guess I'll need some more time to get use to the "new" look...

Who wishes to buy it, well go ahead...with my best wishes...he/she won't regret it ! I guarantee that personally !

Very nice thoughts on the watch. Thanks for the comment :)

To Charles: I have a new blue face two-tone submariner and I assume the things you're asking about are the same between the stainless and the two-tone models. Yes the "pearl" is reinforced with a small metal surround. Doesn't feel very raised at all and I certainly don't think it would get caught on anything (it's mostly smooth when you run your finger over it).

The anti-counterfeit markings are unobtrusive and only visible at certain angles. I actually didn't even notice them until I got the watch home. The markings are definitely not in your face.

Thanks for clearing that up :)

Sort of agree with Leonard, in that I'm not sure I love the new hour markers. Might grow on me, though.

Had a question for someone who has seen one in person. I've only seen pictures of the more recent subs, but the "pearl" at the 12 (in the rotating bezel) seems a bit off to me - it looks like it's been reinforced with a metal surround. I guess the reasoning is to protect the pearl from falling out - I've seen a lot of the older ones where this has happened - but I worry about how high it's raised, and whether it'll get caught on things, or worn, or abused, like the raised markers on my Breitling. Ariel, or anyone else, any comments or thoughts about this?

One other question, this time about the "anti-counterfeiting" markings - I'm usually a fan of having as little "branding" as possible on a watch. I noticed new markings at the interface between the dial and the crystal (I'm not sure what this part of the watch is called). Are they unobtrusive etchings only seen at certain angles, or in-your-face?

Thanks so much. I guess I can answer these questions myself by going out and seeing one in person, but I haven't been able to do that yet.

Watch looks good, no obtrusive pieces or text on it. At Basel so I don't have a lot of time to comment. Wait until you see the piece in person to comment.

The hands now appear completely lost amid the other markers, at least in these images. More than just conservative, this Rolex design looks fear-ridden and indecisive: "Lets boldly enlarge the hour indicators, the hands maybe not so much", or "the dots committee decided on this and the hands committee wants that, so that's what the final design better be".
Personally I think Rolex is the Elvis of luxury goods, performing "live, on stage, in 3-D", forever.
