Oris Darryl O’Young Limited Edition Watches

Oris Darryl OYoung Limited Edition Watch 31 Oris Darryl OYoung Limited Edition Watches

Watch companies do this a lot. Make an interesting watch that is closely connected with someone well known - at least well known to some people. I would say that 95% of the time I have never even heard of the person they are making the watch "in honor of." While it is true that I am not a big sports enthusiast, I should have at least heard of the people right? Popular choices for these watches are race car drivers, golfers, soccer players, etc... In the US these people are mostly unknown - at least in pop culture terms. Take for instance Darryl O'Young that this Oris watch is based on. Clearly from the images he is some type of race drive - but aside from the fact that Oris points out he drives a Porsche, I have no idea who he is, and why I should care.

So am I the wrong audience for this stuff? Or do watch companies just like to connect with people that are unknown in the US. I mean I assume someone out there knows and cares who this guy is. There are always press releases from watch brands talking about how they awarded one of their watches to some person, or made a limited edition for some other person - and I am like; "the hell I am going to write about that!" Cause I don't know who the people are, and I don't care. Maybe if I ended up with one of the watches I would proactively learn about who the person the watch is based on, but it would have to go in that order - which is not ideal.

Though you do know what I care about - the watch. A brand could make a Stalin themed timepiece and I would be all over it if the watch was cool. This Oris Darryl O'Young watch is cool without the racer connection. Other watches are simply a colorized refresh with an engraving on the back to celebrate some soccer player I've never heard of. The chances me of getting excited about one of those is zilch.

At the same time, I admit that if and when brands make watches that celebrate people I do care about, I would probably be into those. Such as famous American actors and such. Make me a cool Harrison Ford "lifetime achievement award" watch and I would seriously consider it. Crazy watch done to celebrate the music of the Red Hot Chili Peppers? I might very well buy into the gimmick. Looks like European watch companies are totally clueless as to the types of people American's want connected with watches (as a selling point). The good thing is that people famous in America are typically famous also outside of America - but the opposite is usually not the case.

So Mr. O'Young, you PCCA Double Class A Champion (whatever that is), keep up the good work, Oris made a nice watch in honor of you, and I will likely never hear about you again. So ignoring that, let's chat about what the watch is. The Oris Darryl O'Young limited editions are based on the TT3 Oris watch collection - one of the cool motor sports themed Oris watches out there.  There are actually two models in this limited edition. The differences? One is 41mm wide, the other is 43.5mm wide. Each model is limited to 997 pieces - in honor of the Porsche Type 997 cars. Though the watch is visually based on a bit on Porsche 911 GT3 cars (versions made for the track, err, I mean MORE for the track).

The slightly oblong case is coated with black DLC (diamond like carbon), which is good. The lugs where the rubber strap is attached to flex so that they can wrap around one's wrist better. On the side of the case is the series number of the watch in the limited edition. Case is nice, and very Oris like is stature and design. The dial is really where this watch is set apart. The skeletonized case is make to look like a Porsche racing wheel - in black with spoke and all. Underneath this is a skeletonized view of the automatic movement and the date disc. The little red arrow at 4 o'clock is wear you read the date. Lots of SuperLumiNova is placed on the hands and hour indicators to help with reading the watch. As a skeletonized dial with lots of visual things going on, the dial is still pretty legible. I also really like the look of the wheel on the face.

Not totally sure what movement is inside the watch. Likely an ETA 2824-2 automatic (or Sellita SW200). The rear of the watch has a sapphire crystal exhibition window with a view into the movement where you can see Oris's signature red toned rotor. Overall it is a cool looking technical watch with a gimmicky, but nevertheless well designed face. Too bad I don't know or care about the guy who the watch is named for, and that it will likely be a bit more expensive than it should. Look for both of the limited editions (of 997 pieces each) available soon.

Thank i like Watch design Sport..

Decidedly good and equably maintained entanglement directory. If the positions your spider's web locate can once in a blue moon submit your site to our directory in search free. setakowa.

Bought this watch last week.. bought 43.5 mm version with serial no. 800/997, and really happy about it!great watch!.. Regardless of it's size, the watch is comparatively weight less than my other 43+ mm watches.. Finally got to feel what oris 'DLC' is all about..

I bought this watch in July on vacation in Ketchikan Alaska. I had no idea who Darryl O'Young was but loved the look of the watch. I get more compliments on this watch then anything else in my collection. It's cool plus the Oris quality. Unfortunately they are virtually impossible to find. Expect to pay $1550 to $1895 if you can find one.

Good review. Glad you like it. I don't think it matters at all who Darryl is if you like the watch!

It's only a matter of time before watch companies jump the shark with their "tribute" watches. If chef Mario Batali can get his own watch it's only a matter of time before they're rudced to paying lip service to sports like curling, lumberjacking,
competitive eating, clog dancing and Amish rake fighting.

Then again - judging by the ridiculous, icnreasingly pretentenious photo spreads in "REV*LUTION magazine that time may come sooner than we think.

Well.. I got something similar coming up...

It would seem to me though that the majority of limited editions that are tribute watches, go to largely unknown identities? As oppose to brand ambassadors who are there to get you in the door, the LE pieces are generally quite obscure.

Darryl O'Young
Carlos Coste
Michael Owen
Thomas Luthi
Oscar Peterson
Antoine de Saint Exupéry
etc.
etc.

Unless you're directly involved with the particular fields of expertise, I would imagine all of these people are complete unknown's.

I would hazard a guess and say that ambassadors bring you to the brand, while the tribute watch personalities are there to get you further emotionally invested into the brand's story?

Just a thought :-)

A Harrison Ford watch?

You got it!

Now is it more "Mosquito Coast" than "Raiders of the Lost Ark"? I suppose it depends on who you ask.

Yup, that is why I mentioned Mr. Ford (it wasn't just totally a random actor I like, lol). Thanks for linking to it though :)

In 2006 Darryl joined Renauer Motorsport for the Spa 24 Hours race, successfully finishing the race with the team.

He has raced for Team Jebsen since 2004 and on 22 October 2006 became series champion of the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia after winning both races at the Zhuhai International Circuit.

For 2007, O'Young joined Schnabl Engineering - LKM - Team Jebsen to take part in the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup. He was the first Hong Kong driver to take part in the series. [1]

In October and November, O'Young was back in Asia for Porsche Carrera Cup Asia, racing in Shanghai, Zhuhai and the Macau Grand Prix. He won the Macau race despite finishing second on the road, as his opponent, Danny Watts violated the rule by overtaking him under a yellow flag caution period and was given a 30-second penalty.

For 2008, Darryl is competing in both Porsche Supercup and Porsche Carrera Cup Asia. O'Young was crowned series champion after the final race at Bahrain International Circuit. He has 196 points and 4 wins in the season. He became the first-ever double Class A champion in the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia.[1]

Darryl also competed in the Merdeka Millennium Endurance Race in Malaysia. Driving for Porsche Club Singapore, he won the race with Mok Wing Sun and Alexander Nicholas Davison. The trio completed 308 laps in 12 hours in their Porsche 997 RSR.[2]

Darryl completed a motor racing hat-trick on 16 November, 2008 when he took top honors at the Windsor Arch Macau GT Cup, driving a Porsche 997 GT3 Cup. He beats Danny Watts by more than two seconds. This was the third time he has won in a Porsche in Macau.[3]

Darryl announced that he will compete the entire 2009 FIA GT Championship season. He will compete in the GT2 category in a Porsche GT3 RSR with Belgium based, Prospeed Competition, the official Porsche factory supported team in the FIA GT championship. In doing so, the 29-year-old will be the first Chinese race driver to compete a full championship in the FIA GT.[4]

At the same time, Darryl will defend his Porsche Carrera Cup Asia crown.

In addition, Darryl will be entering the 24 hours of Le Mans for the first time in his career driving a Porsche GT3 RSR. The Chinese driver spearheaded the driver line up made up of Phillip Hesnault of France and Plamen Kralev of Bulgaria. He will be competing with Hong Kong based Endurance Asia Team which is managed by Thierry Perrier. The team was the first ever Hong Kong/Chinese team entry in the race's 77 year history. The car broke down after 16 hours and was unclassified.

Yes. Thanks Mr. Wiki. This information is easy to find. My point is why should I have to look and be like, "Oh, ok, so that is who he is."

First of all let me say that I love your site. I love it for it's honesty and humor.

Although I'm a machine designer by profession (31 years) I'm relatively new to watches. I buy the magazines, read the blogs hoping to educate myself.

The one thing that really annoys me about the is ttheir unwillingness to offer any kind of criticism about the watches they review. Evrything sent to them is met with praises, hosannahs and a brass marching band.

Not you.

Keep up the good work. Between your website and a few more months of sneaking twenties out of my wife's purse I should have that Stowa Mariner in no time.

Thanks for that comment. Sounds like you get what I am going for. Enjoy that Stowa when you get it. Take care.
