Sinn EZM4 Achilles Watch For The Medical Professional Or Doctor

img55326462 Sinn EZM4 Achilles Watch For The Medical Professional Or DoctorWhen I didn't include doctors in a list of professionals that tend to be watch lovers I got a bit of slack. In response, I will discuss a watch that will appeal to watch loving doctors as it is especially made for them. While there are a good deal of nice and fancy watches out there that a doctor can adorn on their rounds, here is a more tool-like approach to wrist wear.

You'll first have to understand that Sinn EZM watches represent a line of hardcore durable and functional watches. Made for extreme conditions by extreme professionals, these watches represent a pinnacle of the ruggedness a mechanical watch can present. The Sinn EZM4 "Achilles" was designed for doctors, paramedics, and firefighters who would need a well performing watch in conditions that might otherwise destroy or inhibit the function of "other watches." Even if you are a doctor that works in a relatively excitement-free zone, you can still communicate to your patients that you are ready for front-line medic duty should the need occur.

The Sinn EZM4 has a useful feature called a pulsimeter, or puslometer. Frankly the spelling can vary. The feature works a lot like a tachymeter, but instead of measuring distance, you measure someone's heat rate. The operation is pretty simple. Pulsimeters are graduated mostly to 33 beats (meaning you count that many heartbeats to determine the heart rate. The perform the measurement you begin the chronograph on the watch and begin to count 33 heart beats. The moment you have counted 33 beats (with your finger on the stop pusher), you stop the chronograph and the chronograph seconds hand will point to the heat rate on the pulsimeter scale. Sure you could do a little calculation in your head, but this is an easier way to measure pulse.

Aside from this function, the Sinn EZM4 (which uses a Lemania Caliber 5100) also has the day and date, and a large 24 hour hand. The Lemania 5100 is sort of a rival to the Valjoux 7750 movement (though they are different), and while used less, is a very rugged and reliable movement. The size is 40mm wide, while the bracelet is 20mm wide. The crown and pushers are placed on the left side to protect against shock and damage (when placed on the right side).

I really like that the Sinn EZM4, is a very German watch, both in language and personality. The colors are meant to focus on emergency and medical preparedness, but seem to be shared with the German flag (the red, black, and yellow). These are very rare watches as they are no longer being made. Actually none of the EZM models are currently in production, and are all highly sought after. A Sinn EZM4 is currently available on eBay, and certainly worth looking at. And for all the watch loving doctor's out there, appreciate that you have watches such as this made for you, lawyer's can't claim that.

Nice article, as always here. Just one little thing that has nothing to do with the watch: The German flag is black, red, gold. ;-)

There was a funny story just a couple of weeks ago, when some tv-guys have put the wrong colors (exactly the order you mentioned) into a television graphics during the main german TV-news:

Just in case you care, here is how the german flag looks like:

RJ,
Good information about the Lemania 5100 movement. It seems as though there was an issue with Sinn's integration of the movement in some of the EZM models. No mention of too many headaches with the EZM4. Like yourself I prefer having piece of mind when it comes to watches.
One thing I have heard however is the excellent support provided by Sinn. I have heard stories of them bending over backwards to fix issues or respond favorably to customers. I think it has to do with the fact that many Sinn buyers are loyalists and repeat customers, so that would make sense. Nevertheless, good information to have. Thank you.

Back from a search:

Please read the comments from this post, especially the last one made by Bas (van Dorp) pinpoints the Sinn/Lemania 5100 issue:

I also found this text in a review done by Hans Mennink on the EZM by Sinn:

"I've read many reports from EZM1 owners (or any other Lemania 5100 based watch) that they encountered some problems with this watch. First is the fact that many Lemania 5100 based watches seems to have problems with the powerreserve. It would not live up to the 48 hours it should. I cannot say so for my watch.

Other owners have problems with the resetting of the chrono minute hand. It is true that the Lemania 5100 needs firm use of the reset pusher in order to reset the minutye exact back to zero. If one does not succeed in the first, a second firm push on the reset button will reset it back to zero."

Hi Ariel,

Nice write-up on Sinn. I used to have a Sinn 142St.S (black edition) and loved the Sinn EZM1 and EZM4, both with Lemania 5100 movements (so was the 142St.S). Although the Lemania 5100 is a sturdy and reliable movement, Sinn had a number of problems with theirs. Especially the EZM1 was a watch that got returned to Sinn a lot. It had something to do with their own reset- or winding mechanism (can't remember, perhaps one should do a google on this).

Anyway, these type of Sinns (together with the EZM1 and 142) are my favorite models. Although I am not very much in favor of the typical German (slash functional) design, these ones I could live with :-)

KR,
Robert-Jan
