OK people, here is the new "Double Freak," better know as the Freak Diavolo watch from Ulysse Nardin. This is a first look at the watch - and it is strictly a prototype. So you'll see stuff on the the piece here that will clearly be improved, removed, or otherwise changes. Take for instance the black around the bezel that will eventually be black vulcanized rubber. That application on the bezel is for display purposes only. Oh, and you like that little "NOT FOR SALE" reminder on the back of the watch? I wanna see a store try to peddle this one off. The Freak Diavolo isn't a replacement for the original Freak, but rather a different watch. According to Ulysse Nardin, the standard Freak (is it really that "standard?") isn't going to stop being produced. The Freak Diavolo will be a more complex, more expensive watch that features a tourbillon on top, of what is sort of already a type of tourbillon.

You can see the tourbillon at the end of the minute hand (otherwise known as "the Freak" hand). Plus, the tourbillon is a flying one minute tourbillon and the minute hand carousel system is also flying, on the original Freak, it had a small pinion connected to the sapphire crystal that acted like a palette. There is an image of the standard Freak mother model below so that you can compare. The Freak Diavolo is totally a 'flying machine,' and if you liked the original Freak, you will more than likely enjoy the Diavolo. You can compare the two watches to see the style changes on the dial. Much of the watch is the same though. Including the case - which he is 44.5mm wide and in 18k white gold matched to a black alligator strap.

You'll recall that the Freaks are crownless watches. You rotate a ring about the caseback of the watch to adjust the time, while the bezel is rotated to wind the watch. Cool right? The movement contains a high-tech silicium escapement (seen in blue), as well as a silicium hair spring. Ulysse Nardin was/is a big innovator, as it was the first brand to use silicium parts. Laughed at, at first, brands like Breguet and Patek Philippe now commonly use silicium in their movements. The movement here is very accurate according to Ulysse Nardin, and has a long 8 days of power reserve.

You can hate the Freak or you can love it. Personally I am fascinated by it and have utter respect for its complexity and bravery. Few such wild watches are as stimulating and fun to read. The watch does have an hour hand that sits on a sit before the large Freak minute hand. So telling the time isn't hard. Though for my bravado in earnestly desiring to wear this watch, I am faced with the insurmountable hurdle of its price which is destined to be above $100,000. Look for more updates soon on the upcoming Ulysse Nardin Freak Diavolo.

Better advertisement i could not think, DGB maybe works in the Ulysse Nardin company? I don't care who is talking about what, everyone must have an opinion and it can be unacceptable.
Anger is because of possibility to wear such masterpeace. The same I could say when my friend wil by the third new model of LAMBORGHINI. After fourth pinth of bear I will say to him "Why the hell you are spending your money on the same sh..? There are many better cars" Will I be the righteous one - YES... from my point of view. People who are making even something new in these times are already masters of their work.
Best wishes to ULYSSE NARDIN team, keep the way you chosed. If someone wants to shout on you - the sign that you are visible, if you are visible - you are making your dream, if your dreams will come true, I think we will be pleased not less ;)

i don't like this watch that much.

but i love that it exists - and i think people who work at the margins of art are extremely important to society.

@dean - the question you need to answer for yourself is: why does the fact that i don't like this watch make me angry?

Wow, Dean. Of all the crap in the watch industry, what the heck is it about this one that so irks you? I can understand if you have aesthetic reservations about it, but why the hate for a company that is actually contributing to innovation? Why does UN deserve to go out of business particularly, when Bell and Ross, Breitling, and countless others make pointlessly large watches with regular-sized ETA movements?

Personally I am quite conservative in the watches I buy and wear though I do covet an Alain Silberstein. I am excited by this Nardin.

The art is not harmed, the lovers of elegant watches have not been damaged. However the designers, and watch makers within Ulysse Nardin have doubtlessly been been galvanized working on this project much like sedan engineers are inspired working on a race car. The brand picks up some prestige by taking a chance and stretching.

The buyer is not a "sucker" but someone who loves the unique and perhaps loves the controversy. He is able to buy this watch much like I pick up and elegant old Lord Elgin off eBay. Plus he is a center of attention at any watch event.

If I won the lottery tomorrow I would not buy this watch but I would love to wear it for an hour. Its development has harmed no one and is a win win for many.

Geez, Dean Grant Baker, why don't you tell us how you really feel?
I imagine you also dispise cubist art works as well? "THAT'S NOT WHERE A NOSE IS SUPPOSED TO GO, SO IT'S NOT A PAINTING!!!".

I for one absolutely applaud what is happening here, and we should see other makers try and move into new directions like this. That seconds hand that spins as it rotates? Perfection. I do think that the red used to display the seconds is out of place, but I get that they wanted some contrast in there to make it easily recognizable. I also think the bubble-style arabic numberals are out of place, but not by much. I almost want to photoshop that picture and replace them with markers to see how I like that better.
And one of the best parts of this piece is maybe the simplest; the band. Yes, I still prefer bracelets, but Nardin did it again: they made a curved end to the band so that it meets the case flush, which I think finishes this piece off flawlessly. Thats one of the main reasons I prefer bracelets - they meet the case flush, so it all looks cohesive. I hate when you see high-end watches that have bands that leave that space empty between the end of the band and the case, as though the designer gave up at that point.

Should I ever have $100k to toss around willy-nilly, I'd certainly be wearing this watch.

It is as absurd and groteseque as a circus clown.

There is a sucker born every minute.

I'm with Shinytoys and Ariel... What's an artist or designer supposed to do? Only make stuff EVERYONE likes? Yeah, right. Since that's not possible, the best option is to experiment, innovate, and express one's self in original ways.

I read this blog primarily because Ariel finds the most unique stuff to write about.

Ulysse Nardin, "The Freak" Only one like it, never copied cause it's just to damn hard to duplicate.
Awesome watches form a super fine artist, designer, and truly gifted watch maker.
LET YOUR FREAK FLAG FLY !!!!!!
ROCK ON NARDIN !!!!!!!!

Why?

This is an excercise in futility cum stupidity that is indicative of 'haute horology' these days.
They won't sell one; ever.

And if some twit ever does plop down 100K for a watch that doesn't tell time, they should be culled and given a posthumous "Darwin Award".

The fact that they attempt to set the "hands" to 10:10 is simply hilarious.

I hope these guys fail in the next year; they deserve it.

I am so sick of 'blued-metals', TIMEX does it on a 200 dollar watch, so honestly, big-hairy-deal; cudos, you're a TIMEX: it does nothing for aesthetics anymore seeing as disposable watches are using blued metal; What it does tell me is that they're relying upon a bling factor to attract non watch people. A factor that died out almost a decade ago.

The 45.5 mm case speaks volumes as to whom they hope to market this watch too --- and the Darwin Award goes too...

Complete folly, and I hope it costs them dearly.

Dean, I am glad you like this watch so wholeheartedly. Surely you must have some complaints with it?

I am afraid DGB underestimates the cost of the Diavolo, will it be released. And I am afraid it has nothing to do with Darwin award - just more money one person can reasonably spend in a lifetime. Name says it all - Freak. Big charity has same roots. DGB, you will be overwhelmed by how many people actually buy watches like these.
