World Watch Report 2012

WWR 3 290x300 World Watch Report 2012

The World Watch Report is a very important survey of online activity for the luxury watch industry. I am also a contributor to the annual reports and would like to share with you some interesting excerpts from the 2012 edition of the World Watch Report (WWR). The survey looks at a range of brands that are considered haute horology brands, and creates analytics and graphs based on a lot of information that they gather. It is mainly aimed at people in the watch industry but should prove interesting to dedicated watch lovers as well.

If you click on these graphics they should expand and you can see some interesting excerpts. For more info you can visit their website via the link above.

1/5 of all American watch-related browsing is on fakes? Yikes.

Ariel, can you provide a bit more information? According to the World Watch Report website, they track 40 brands, including Rolex, Omega, Breitling, Carter, etc. Those brands are not included in the "Haute Horology" category? How do the rest of those 40 brands stack up?

Are only three regions profiled, or does the group also conduct research on other markets, ie: rest of Asia, Latin America, Middle East, etc.?

It would be interesting to know exactly how this data is being used by the watch industry...

Curious why "haute horology" excludes brands like Panerai and Rolex (whose cheapest watches are more expensive than some on the list). Any idea who makes this determination and based on what criteria?

otaking241 I suspect because brands like that top out in quality and craftsmanship WAY before the above brands do. JLC just created a chronograph watch with separate barrels for the time and chrono. Rolex just made...a bigger case for the Explorer and their most complicated watch has a chronograph (holy complications Batman!). And Panerai`s nicest watch has an 8 days power reserve and GMT. Not exactly overachievers those two brands.

nateb123otaking241 That makes sense. If you look at the brand's high-end aspirations a dividing line becomes a little clearer. I think it's telling though that the watches most searched for from these "haute" brands seem to be the more basic designs. I imagine these guys rely on heavy sales of their "bread and butter" lines helps fund the R&D required to produce headline-grabbing monsters like the Sidérale Scafusia.
