It is easy to see how this watch came into existence. Zodiac is part of the uber-mediocre Fossil watch company. Think of a committee sitting around together. Maybe only one or two of them knows anything about the technical side of watch making. The rest are product designers, hipsters, and marketing people who like to gauge market trends. Someone blandly comments, "Zodiac has a deep history with diving, let's create something bold, that fits in the existing product line." The non-technical designers go to work, basically ignoring most of the functional elements, and only focusing on pure form, or what their teachers awarded them on in product design school. They take into consideration the memo that big watches are in, they look at other diving watches, and have some idea of the materials they can work with. Oh, and watches tend to look more 'legitimate' when there are lots of instrumental looking hash marks on the dial. Who knows what odd impractical thing they came up with initially?

Then the people in production come in. Perhaps a few engineers, and figure out how to make it all work. "This is too expensive, this makes no sense, and why is there a chronograph that only counts sixty seconds?" And it just goes on like that. In another meeting the compromises are made because the design people can't fit in the dials for a full chronograph, and the marketing people needed a chronograph, you keep in the seconds counter, and have... a 60 second stopwatch. Really useful right? No, its not. Which sort of makes me understand the placement of the tachymeter (to measure speed) on the bezel, but that has next-to-no functional placement on a diver's watch. Usually this is where you place a rotating diver's bezel, which is absent here. The chronograph pushers are screwed in, which is cool, but the water resistance is curiously only 100m. So the point here is that while this resembles a diver watch, and has "diver" in the name, it is not a diver's watch in any functional way.

A cool part of this watch is the LED light which can be turned on and off via the crown on the left side of the case. Switching this on lights up the face for really easy night reading. See the recessed area between the dial and the chapter ring? This is the hole for light to flow through when the light is turned on, illuminating the face. This is a nice little feature, just don't use it too often to preserve the battery life.

There is also the big date function, which looks nice, and the subsidiary seconds dial, which is also 'OK.' The watch epitomizes acceptable boldness, standard eccentricity, and mediocre excitement. The best part is likely the hands. So those are pretty well done, but then again they look like Japanese cartoon swords stuck in a watch face. Inside the Zodiac ZMX 03 is a Ronda Startech quartz movement, and the 50mm sized case is massive with 28mm wide lugs. A sapphire crystal face helps to give this watch some justification for its price, but not much. Retail is $695, but don't spend a penny over $450.

Do not pay over 300 for it. I believe I purchased my for 200, brand new.

I have the ZMX and enjoy wearing it; it receives many compliments.

I RESPECT everyone's Opinion here. May I add that People buy/collect watches for different reasons. OK, I admit "Watches are Whack", a slight twist on a Female Singers quote on TV. But I am ADDICTED to them. I USED to be a Spec Ops guy = Retired, and Diver. Now in my Post Mid-life crisis I USE/NEED Watches, Swiss ones, Self Winders, Quartz, and most have at least one or two redeeming Features, ie: Big Date, Tritium Tubes on Dial, Illumination, etc"! AND a big Face is good also for my SAD eyesight! Sure I wish I had Hublots, Clerc's, Zenith's or even a Devon Tread!! Sadly my $$ do not reach these levels. I have had Rolex, Bell and Ross, Omegas. So i found one of the Zodiacs mentioned on sale, New, well Under $200US, and bought one, hopefully the Large Date and Gimmick Lighting will be easy to see on my 3rd trip to the John in the middle of the night. :) MY reasons are COST = RETURNS for money spent. Of course if I were Uber Rich this would have no bearing. I do NOT envy "ADMINS" job of reviewing the watches! Seems Like a New Design by someone every hour of every day. Now if SOMEONE would be happy to DONATE a Zenith Defy Zero-G or a Girard Perregaux Bi-Axial Tourbillon, I would be willing to share the Workload reviewing! :) Thanks guys! VERY informative Blog here!

You guys are obviously watch geeks which is cool. I'm kinda beginning to be one myself. 2 things. the ZMX-03 is a sick watch (all black). It has all the elements of a watch I'm looking for, but I cant find a retail dealer anywhere. Not sure what the guy is talking about who found it at Nordstrom, but when I called the company direct they said it is an online watch only. I want to buy it, but would like to try it on first. I found a site that sells them for $550. Any suggestions? I live in southern california. Thx

I hate to stickle, but this watch has had a bad rap that I don't think it entirely deserves. I can understand working from a static image is difficult, but having handled and sold these watches, in all of the colour incarnations, I have gained an appreciation of them.

To clarify, the sub dial is not in fact a subsidiary second hand, but is a (unicompax?) chronograph counter, with both minute and hour hands for the chronograph. I like it as it doesn't clutter visibility, but keeps functionality, which was one of the gripes. In terms of colour combo, I think this model is hideous, the black PVD options are a lot more attractive with blue(ZO8509) and orange(ZO8508) hints, and forthcoming Smoke Screen (All Black) and Desert colours are far superior for cool factor.

The LED's are half cool gimmick, and half pure gimmick. Sure, it sacrifices water resistance, but in reality, does it truly make any difference to the average user? If they had left off the LED's and uprated it to 200m, this watch would have passed under the radar without a mention anyway, too boring to be reported.

In terms of marketing, for the UK it hasn't been plugged as a diver's watch. I cannot vouch for the US, but it has been included in their UK line up as a solid, rugged sports watch, built to handle the extreme rubbish their marketing department spits out. Kinda climb a mountain, swim in the sea, stalk the plains testosterone fuelled nonsense, but never has been pushed as a diver's tool. Hence the tachymetre bezel instead of diver's bezel, second gripe considered.

I understand that you have a lot of watches under scrutiny, and that you often only have a pic or two to work off, but I ask that this watch is tested fairly this time before despatching it with a "Bad Design Award", and a disapproving glance. If you test it and it fails miserably on its features, I appreciate your opinion, but I was unhappy as it failed on 2 things it (in my opinion) was equipped for, and was not designed for.

We are finding that people are looking for a big bad watch, but in quality fashion watch territory (£350-650), and the ZMX-03 it is a viable and different option to the TW Steel's, basic U-Boats, and the myriad of Nixon 51-30's. It is quirky, it is big and insanely solid, but it is incredibly well made for that price range, and with the bonus of sapphire crystal, caoutchouc rubber strap and Swiss Made on the dial which TW and Nixon lack, even if it is still a Fossil Group brand.

Apologies for verbosity on this comment...

Terry,

Your thoughts are appreciated. Thanks for the contribution.

Got it yesterday from ebay.
I was looking for a small and tasteful understatement.
I jusT love my ZMX03!

I initially found a Zodiac Cyclop online and was about to buy it when i came across the zmx going cheap on ebay. My finger was hovering over the button when i decided to try and find a few reviews before i bit the bullet.... having read this and a few others i completely did a turn around and settled for the more exspensive but(in my eyes)superior Cyclop. ZMX too big and clunky, and yes..it is pretending to be a dive watch whilst lacking the necessary attributes. Not the ideal watch for a small wristed man but maybe ideal for someone lacking in size in another department!

I remember Zodiac watches from the old days. Things have sure changed with that company. It would be nice to see these long established watch MFG's go back to the simple and classic looks that made them what they are today. Even the auto industry had the sense to do this.

I just tried on the all black version of this, at Nordstroms, it is surprisingly comfortable and good looking. At $795, it was a little too pricey, so I went with a Victorinox. That said, this is actually a nice watch, but it does not offer much chronometric value.

Hi Jason,
Thank makes a lot of sense. Thanks for the comment.

My main concern is what this watch is corny. The hour and minute hands are way too small and the logo is too big. I tried to dive with it and my hand got bitten off by a shark.

Haha, nice Bert! A new trend for diver watches: the 500 meter water resistant "Shark Bait" Dive watch.

The reviewer obviously doesn't understand innovation. What'd you expect? Another Submariner clone? This is not a diver watch anyway, and Zodiac has always been known for much more than that. The ZMX stands for Zodiac Mission eXtreme. It is a watch for fun and adventurous activities (and people). If the reviewer actually held current production Zodiacs in his hand instead of just looking at a picture and making snide comments, he'd see the real quality that the Fossil Group is building into them. Oh well, armchair reviewers abound...

Hey there,
Thanks for the comment. You know, I see your point, and I appreciate it. It is true that I wrote the review based on the image, but the other day I did get to see the a lot of the Zodiac line at the JCK trade show in Las Vegas. My opinion didn't really change. I mean the watches certainly have novelty, and I do state that, but I look deeper at the design principles and the lasting value. As a fashion watch it is fine, but when you look at the detail behind all the functionality... it begins to suffer a bit. I am pretty well admired as someone who backs up their opinions with facts, but in the end, it is still my opinion. I totally encourage your viewpoint. Thanks for participating and take care.
